He only put the 48h cycle because townies were complaining that day took too long. So since he made that change because the town wanted it, maybe he'd be willing to extend it again if the town wants it.

Oh: one thing: vigilantes leave clues behind as well. So if detectives check out and a clue matches a player, it could be that they're vigilantes.
