There are several approaches you can take:
A) The first lynches will be the ones you think are fairly obvious and will net town a few points.
B) The first 1 or 2 lynches will be coinflippy as you get rid of useless points of contention.
I suggest going with A) with the caveat that you let the talkers stay in the game to figure it out and not leave the weakest people till last.

honestly though being mayor doesn't really matter much, it's just a way to make an order and if mafia get it then it only screws stuff up a tiny bit but not really that much in the scheme of things

Exactly the strategy i outlined in A). We wanted to get the most points for town as possible so we wouldn't fuck it up later so we were organising it by getting mafia reads and collectively deciding.
