I figured it was because the other team had very little magic damage, but quite a lot of dive, so he wanted to be able to tank a bit more in teamfights, and not waste gold on useless mr.
RoA + armguard + his e make him really tanky against j4 ults, while also giving a lot of damage, and a midgame timing where RoA is fully stacked, renek has 1-2 items, and varus has his bt. They could just go in and kill everything before the double adc comp got going.
Might be over thinking it though :p

im guessing its sort of like they're international wild cards (kind of like worlds), but nip/sk/cw/tcm all qualified from an amateur qualifying tournament and right now nip and sk are considered amateur teams cuz they're not confirmed for next lcs season. just like how curse, coast, and ves are playing in challenger events
