It removes meaningless games or games which only matter for one of the teams playing.

Group A
Sk - 1 EU GE - 1 LCK Flash wolves - 2 Taiwan C9 - 2 NA
Group B
TSM - 1 NA Gambit - 4 EU CJ - 3/4th LCK WE - 11th LPL
It's what happens when you base seeding on irrelevant tournaments. Even if you assume that WE being 11th in LPL equates to just as strong as 2 in NA you still have both top teams in LCK/EU and 2nd best team in NA all in the same group.

People prefer GSL because it eliminates a situation where a team requires a win against a team that is already knocked out of the tournament or the inverse where a team is already guaranteed a spot. This means teams that played that team prior to the last game are potentially at a disadvantage.

CJ vs Gambit should be interesting, especially historically.

The funny thing is when people don't understand the format and think the entire tournament is double elimination and start yelling abuse at IEM on Reddit about how unfair it is. Standart bo2 round robin, like old OGN is the best for league.

This is how I see it:
GE > CJ C9 = TSM SK = Gambit yoeFW < WE
Absolutely even groups imo.

I imagine if they had time for a Bo2 round robin then we would have ended up with Bo3 dual tournament.

Would you say it's better for Bo2 spread out, or having the two games played consecutively? Both have their pros and cons.

Numbers matter because they are the only way to objectively judge strength.

Btw its not like I am 100% sure on this, I have actually no idea about the Taiwanese league. :D

For weekly tournament together (OGN), for 3/4 days tournament (IEM) doesn't really matter, but I can see argument for spread out, first day - one game, second day - rematch.

It really depends on how you view Gambit, Wolves and WE. Is an awful WE still able to contend? How good is wolves really? Then is Gambit's recent streak going to continue or is is just a honeymoon period with a new midlaner? Overall group A feels stronger than B as GE is the clear favourite to win the whole tournament and C9 is better than TSM when it comes to international competition. You can always trust in Dyrus/WT to tilt feed against good teams. SK weakness in EU is really due to teams knowing their style of play which could mean the int teams aren't really that prepared and let them do what they want.
Anyway that's all opinion though so at the end of the day it doesn't mean much. They didn't seed based on opinion but instead based on results from prior tournaments that doesn't reflect the current teams at all which is the main issue.

Notice that they seeded 1) by region 2) by whether you won an IEM or got an invite, so really no other way to do it unbiased.

People are truly whining for nothing, those groups were expected to be like that anyway, after you drop Koreans in different groups, Americans and Europeans and WE/YoeFW can't be with C9/Gambit in same time.

I expect SK to disappoint and GE Tigers to get upset.

Is it seriously going to be upset? With all white guys achievements at this point, getting a win against 10th-11th best LPL team is success already.
Ninja's icebird will kill Bjergsen and Spirit will body Santorin, all good.

The "BO1" excuse from either side is going to be glorious. Seeing how WE and iG performed last year I don't understand where the non-chinese confidence in WE is coming from but I guess something something LPL champion aluka.
