Following CJ Entus’ 2-0 victory over SK Telecom T1 in OGN on the 10th, CJ Entus’ Shy was interviewed by Inven. Disclaimer: I’m translating from Korean via Chinese, so more meaning may be lost in transit. I may take some liberties in translation in an attempt to recover the original meaning.

Q: Prior to the season’s start, many people evaluated your team as being relatively weak. Any thoughts regarding this after today’s victory?

Shy: Our preparation for this series went very smoothly. In fact, we hardly lost a single scrim in practice. Yesterday, all of us were wondering why our games felt so good. Today’s series even exceeded those expectations, we played very well.

Q: Your team composition in game 2 was rather unique. How’d you come up with it?

Shy: Lulu’s very adept at negating the enemy team’s damage and bolstering our own ADC’s damage output. Even if our ADC’s doing poorly, Lulu can rescue him back into relevance in the game. Thus, I never thought that lacking a tanky champion in top would be a big weakness. Our ADCs ended up performing very well, so I felt like there was no way we would lose.

Q: How’d you prepare for this series?

Shy: The essence of toplane is a pillow fight between tanks. Practice was no different – Lissandra and Rumble were on permaban, so my opponent and I were always forced to pick tanks.

Q: In game 2, Faker pulled out Ahri. Did you feel threatened?

Shy: Our teamcomp had multiple ADCs, so we got a pretty bad shock when they picked Ahri. But in the game itself, we overcame it easily. The pick never ended up being a big threat to us.

Q: Of course a lot of factors go into a victory, but what would you say was the biggest reason for your success today?

Shy: Today, before the match, the coach sat down and told us “You’ve got nothing to lose, so play like it.” This one sentence gave us great motivation. In all seriousness, even if we went 0-2 today, people would have just thought “yep, that’s the expected result.” Just like the coach said, there was nowhere left to fall to.

Q: Even though you’ve crossed this major hurdle today, you still have a lot of strong opponents left to face. What’s your objective this season?

Shy: I think if we play well, we can set our objective as 1st place in the first split [t/n: unsure]. We’ve scrimmed against most of our opponents before, and we won today’s match, so our confidence is restored. We’ve historically done very well in scrims but performed poorly in actual matches, so I felt like when we scrimmed, our opponents didn’t play seriously. But today’s match showed us that isn’t the case.

Q: In pick/bans, you let Gnar through but didn’t prioritize him in pick phase. Why?

Shy: There isn’t really a champion that can shut down Gnar, but at the same time it isn’t a champion that fits me personally. Also, even if they pick Gnar and we lose, I wouldn’t feel like it’s because the Gnar. I guess it just isn’t a champion that matches my style.

Q: Is there a team you’re especially being cautious of?

Shy: GE Tigers. We lost to them in preseason and they’ve been outstanding in scrims.

Q: Anything else?

Shy: Even though it was preseason, we have been on a huge losing streak, and I’m very sorry and humbled for showing that kind of performance. Today we solidly stood on the winning side [t/n some weird slang here, unsure, it literally says “solidly stood in front of the rice noodles”], so I’m overjoyed. Also, to the management and organization, who waited through our long losing streak, thank you. Right after preseason ended, the coaches ran into some tough times, and we the players had to practice on our own for a while. Even in those conditions, our team’s drive never wavered, so I’d lastly like to thank my teammates for their support.

I wonder how Shy's apprehension to play Gnar is going to affect CJ throughout the season.

Shy with a great interview. Interesting the Tigers seem to be one of the scariest teams. Everyone is scared of Smeb.

I told everybody that Tigers will be top3 at the end of the season. They have now two high level SoloQ people as coaches.

the last sentence is quite sad but very on point.

We'll just have to Pray for their bot lane to improve.

I forget which season of OGN It was, but Frost recently went on a solid win streak and I got my hopes way up only to have them smashed... I'm happy, but hesitant this time around.

I really hope this is the beginning of CJ returning to form. Can't wait to see Shy and Madlife pulling insane plays like they used to back in 2012/early 2013. Ambition in the jungle seems to show promise, and Coco was really outstanding throughout the entire series. However I still feel that as long as they have Space, they're never going to be a top tier team. Even in these series where they stomped SKT T1 handily, Space seemed rather extremely underwhelming. Even CJ/Shy don't seem to have a lot of confidence in Space "Lulu’s very adept at negating the enemy team’s damage and bolstering our own ADC’s damage output. Even if our ADC’s doing poorly, Lulu can rescue him back into relevance in the game"

Looks like OGN isn't going to be dominated by 1 or 2 after all. Hopefully this will be CJs return to old strength.

They sure did play like they were solidly standing in front of the rice noodles, no doubt about that.

Probably not too much, assuming Gnar gets nerfed.

Yeah, this is exciting. There is the possibility that the flight of the Korean stars over to China has left a void that will result in larger parity in OGN. That said, this could all be shaken out by the summer season with only a few top teams once again. We might even see some players leave LPL to return if they aren't happy after the spring, which could mix things up.

All in all, we'll just have to see. Probably too early to tell.

I have a feeling Gnar will be the Thresh of the top lane. His kit in itself is just so good that even if you drastically lower his numbers, he'll still be a good pick simply because his ult is so game changing.

I really disagree with that statement. Gnar's kit in itself is indeed really good, but the fact that his ult is game changing shouldn't make him a Thresh of the toplane. On the one hand, when you look at Thresh's kit, regardless of numbers, he's just capable of doing so much for a champion in his position. Gnar, on the other hand, has a really good and stable laning phase (he can constantly CS from a distance with Q, he has his E to escape/follow up on ganks, some sustain from his transformation/Doran's Blade), which in my opinion is one reason he's such a high priority pick as well as his team fighting proficiency.

By the same logic (regarding his ult being game changing), Amumu would still be a viable pick, since his ult has the same purpose. Right now Gnar cannot be punished since he's strong early/mid/late, he can't be punished through laning and his team fighting presence is way too relevant. If Riot manages to nerf his laning phase, I could see Gnar out of the picture. Not to mention his ult is very difficult to make great use of, which made Marin (possibly judging from the picks/bans on game 2 from CJ vs SKT) shy away from the pick, going for the Maokai instead.

I think Shy not being able to play Gnar at a competitive level might come back to haunt him later on, as Gnar really is OP at his current state. Maybe CJ has strategies on how to counter Gnar, as they left him up both games of the series VS SKT.
