Hello Summoners! The IPL is proud to present the 32 team League of Legends online qualifiers for IPL4! The first place team will receive airfare and hotel accommodations to the live event. The top 4 teams from the qualifier will earn a spot in the 8-team championship bracket at IPL4 and receive a cash prize! Please note that there will be only four team openings at our live event, which are obtainable only through this online qualifier!

Registration does not guarantee entry into the qualifier bracket. Our tournament staff will choose participating teams to be in the qualifier bracket based on team ELO, player ELO, and previous tournament standings. At this time, we will only be accepting sign up from NA and EU based teams.

Once selected to participate in the qualifier bracket, a registration fee of $25 is required within three business days of notification. Failure to pay the registration fee will result in disqualification from the qualifier bracket and a new team will be chosen to fill the empty spot.

Unfortunately, we are not yet able to announce the date or venue of our live event yet, but it will take place in Las Vegas. All we can tell you is that it is coming up soon and these qualifiers were scheduled in a way that ensures that we have time for travel preparations to be made. If for any reason, a team who qualifies in these online qualifiers cannot make the trip to our live event, their team registration fee will be refunded and we will use the qualifier results to determine who will fill their team spot and receive the prize and tournament qualification instead.

When

Sign Ups: Sign ups begin immediately and will continue through February 10th.
Sign up here: http://esports.ign.com/lol/ipl4_signup

Round of 32: Feb 11th – Feb 17th. Teams will play their matches on their own accord, reporting the results to tournament staff.

Round of 16: Saturday, Feb 18th and Sunday, Feb 19th, 9:00AM PST (That is Saturday morning for North America, Saturday evening for Europe). Teams will play matches under the supervision of tournament staff. Matches will be broadcasted live, or recorded for later broadcast.

Round of 8, Semifinals, and Grand finals: Saturday, Feb 25th and Sunday, Feb 26th 12:00PM PST (That is Saturday afternoon for North America, Saturday evening for Europe). Teams will play matches under the supervision of tournament staff. Matches will be broadcasted live!

The Format

Teams are expected to check in 45 minutes before the start of the online qualifiers. Please be aware that these qualifiers can and will take a lot of time. Each round is a best of 3.

Servers: All games will be played by default on the North American server. We ask that teams remain on North America in order to ease the facilitation of the tournament, and only switch servers if both teams agree to it and it is deemed necessary to play without severe lag.

Note 1: There will be no age restrictions at all for IPL 4.
Note 2: Residents of the state of Vermont may not participate in the online qualifiers due to state law.

On which server is this being played since it is for EU and US? Also you should have waited till you knew which 4 teams will get a direct invite and how big the cash prize for the top 8 is. Most teams will probably hold back till then. Good luck.

See, what would be PERFECT would be invites to M5, CLG.EU, AL, and Sypher. THAT would be a tourney.

IPL's decision is better because it is less biased. Why invite those teams and not aAa, SK, fanatic, exGBT or Millenium?

aAa beat CLG.eu, Sk beat m5, fanatic has a good track record at LANs, exGBT got second at WCG, Millenium got decent results. IPLs decision is correct in inviting the prior teams and having the new ones fight it out. Might as well add MiG to the invitees.

Hoping the EU teams actually sign up for this. Although playing on NA is pretty bad for them, however the top tier teams should make it though.
Go go Alliance.

Lexvink is it you who's at UW? I thought it was Aphromoo originially since he's friends with a guy I know but it's not...
I'm trying to keep track of all the people I know from here/all the connections I have but it's getting difficult. (Trying to maybe spearhead a CSL LoL team though I'm sure the pros would be too busy...)

For the Ro16 we'll be drawing up a schedule spanning both days. If you make it past the Ro32, IPL will work with both teams to find the best time for everyone to play their match and for us to either broadcast or record the games. =)

i guess we will just bank on the lag effect combined with the fact that we are probably completely unknowns to the EU teams to our advantage and leverage an easy win!

Bottom and top of the bracket have much stronger teams than the middle of it. Anyways looking at the bracket the teams that gonna get through are: 1.M5/mouz/AL, 2.SK/MyBoys/Sypher, 3.Fnatic/Curse, 4.aaa/Goose/3Dmax/exGBT/CLG.eu.

Top seed first spot in the bracker. Second seed bottom spot ect is a common way of filling brackets that indeed makes top abd bot much stronger then the middle where the average teams end up.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

Guitar, I love ya, but topping fnatic in a bo3 is a tall order. Anyone can win a bo1, but a bo3 gets tricky.

you make a good point, not competing in a single go4lol since may of 2011 HAS made it hard to place in them :hmya:
go4lol biggest waste of time ever. wait around for 3 hours after the official start to finally get brackets, stomp 2 1200-level teams in 20 minutes, 2 hours wait between every game, third round go against a good team and have 1 good game. 1 good game in 7 hours is not worth our time lol

Non-blue reliant jungler too stronk. Can't outpush sion with blue @ lvl 4 with foxbitch. especially when i'm an AD player ^_^

But I do hope you're joking. It was mostly kennen coming in and pressing R to zone out half our team

Can't believe Sypher is down already, great job by V8. Fnatic might go down here to TCM, TCM is playing very well.

Wow, no need to get worked up about it. V8 have actually been improving a lot over the last couple months if you've kept up with their play. And after they beat Myboyz, Myboyz said that they probably wouldn't have much trouble beating Sypher... so to say that it's just the ping is a little insulting, especially when some of the V8 members are even a part of our TL Lol community.

I benched myself due to IRL commitments, UnstoppableX, who was always with us is jungling now, I am acting like sort of manager now. That is why I didn't stream it.

I believe Ro8, semis, and finals will be played next weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

also v8 treeeskimo and takashix were having some real lag issues game 1 (same house), eski tried to request a pause but sypher wouldn't do it, so he AFK'd at base for ~3 waves to run downstairs and ask people to halt downloads and stuff during the tourney games.

Nunu wasn't really nerfed? What?

v1.0.0.120 - 2011-06-22

Consume damage reduced at earlier ranks to 400/525/650/775/900 from 500/600/700/800/900
Ice Blast slow reduced at earlier ranks to 20/30/40/50/60% from 40/45/50/55/60%

Those changes pretty much knocked him out of viability.

Yeah I remember hearing that and thinking "Nunu hasn't ever been nerfed? This guy has no idea what he is talking about"

Also, EZ knock out SK. SK were late so they started the series with a 1 match disadvantage. EZ took it 1-0. Graves was up some ridiculous amount of CS on kog, something like 100cs at the 25-30 min mark.

@Lex
Wasn't it cause Skarner was suppressing the Nunu (so he couldn't smite)? Or were those super early smites at like 2k hp from the SK jungler?

Also, congrats, you guys are facing EZ in the Ro8. I bet you guys fancy your chances at making it to the Ro4 (and consequentially, into the vegas tourney).

Nunu had smite on cooldown on the first dragon, it came up very shortly after dragon was smited by skarner. As for why he didnt consume, I'm not sure, maybe he had used it just before to try to rush dragon, and it has a long cooldown.

1st dragon, smite was on cd, but idk why he didn't have consume ready to last hit drag, he should have planned that ahead knowing smite was on cd

At multiple of the other dragons, there were chances to smite steal on the engage, but that is slightly difficult to be completely aware of the team fight, as well as smite correctly.

At baron, I think nunu smited as soon as he had vision of it, so the skarner ult was just to deny consume.

I wasnt able to watch the game (Dont know if it was streamed or not) but that is so weird, why wouldnt they pause if they were on tournament realm. That seems like really unprofessional and honestly rude behaviour from Sypher. Especially since from what youre saying its obvious there were lag issues. I simply cant think for any reason why they would have a problem pausing.

I'm not usually one to criticize casters on their game knowledge, but when they are calling M5's comp "early game", it kinda stings my ear. Corki, ->Karthus<-, ->GP<- is early game?

wowow holy crap that flash sonaulta-through-wall to stop a basing champ to allow their GP to score the triple.

Yeah, Darien's GP farmed himself up very nicely, and all of a sudden TriforceAtmogsPlank turned up and cleaned up all the teamfights. Turning that Voli/Mao gank top when his tower was down into a double kill for himself with the help of a Karthus ulti was v.nice, too; Genja's Corki was ridiculously - but productively - aggressive.

I think this is the most aggressively roaming I've seen a bot lane play this early on in a tournament game. 3/0/1 Corki at ~5mins, two levels above Sivir, and with double buff.

Kennen gets dived top by Udyr/Rumble, and picks up a double kill, surviving at 30hp or so.

Corki double dorans + sheen at 7 minutes, the pain

atlanta half corki's cs, that lane is so terrible to witness.
AAA picks up dragon and another kill for corki

Corki is going to be do so much more damage than sivir, and galio is winning mid, rumble still able to take out kennen even after that double kill. IMO at this point its already AAA's game to lose.

Once Yellowstar gets phage and buys a vamp scepter and he can pretty much 1v2 that bot lane then. Janna could go roam free.

Ahri, Kennen, and Lee catch Udyr at his red and kill him at top inner, but they get cut off by Galio/Rumble and lose Kennen & Lee in exchange.

aAa take dragon, but Goose take four kills while losing only two.

Oh wow, goose turns things around at the dragon fight trades 2 for 4. Galio ultied one person and kenne got a really great ult off for goose.

Edit : Never mind my screen buzzed out ._.

Janna baits bot, AAA gank bot with 5 gets 3 kills and takes 1st and 2nd tier bot tower
7k Gold difference.

aAa four-man dive bot (more or less) and get three kills and two towers; Lee/Kennen kill Rumble top and take top tower.

Goose's Leona still with just boots+cloth; aAa's Janna has HoG/Reverie.

Big fight at top tower; eventual ace for aAa while losing three. Lee could have escape but somehow thought his ninja skills would let him finish off a v.low Janna supported by Galio, which are the two champions I would not want to attempt to win a war of zone control/movement with.

aAa grab baron, half a dozen kills or so, and the game.

AAA catches ahri and sivir, ahri barely survives after burning ult and flash, and sivir dies, AAA baron, Goose contests, Kennen and Lee Sin die, AAA take baron. Way ahead. Goose surrenders.

fun fact, galio 7-0-11 and top cs in the game had 10k gold at 20 minutes. his team had 40k total, so he was 25% of the gold value of his team.

at 22 minutes leona had nothing but boots and a cloth armor. She was nothing but a health pack for the enemy ad carry, click on her when you're low to gain some health. Goose would have been better off with her sitting in the fountain.

at 22 minutes leona had nothing but boots and a cloth armor. She was nothing but a health pack for the enemy ad carry, click on her when you're low to gain some health. Goose would have been better off with her sitting in the fountain.

Was it Moma on Galio?
Because it sounds like he was MVP again.

Who are the commentators on the official stream... I really like when someone first points out how new a team is and then predicts that statistically they are likely to loose. /sarcasm off

They definately need more experience and game knowledge. I'm ok with their voice and the duo otherwise, but the glaring mistakes in what they say is getting a tad overwhelming.

standard, with a few exceptions only the pros are any good at commentating in this game (I like zenon commentating, also I like joe... but they both need to be paired with someone high skill). At least we don't have to listen to colbycheeze, ugh.

Dont forget Deman, who seems to have a huge passion about the game, watches a lot of pro streams etc, while also being a professional caster.

Ooo Sejuani for Rflex, I like it, I like it. Tons of CC and their lanes are quite strong so they can follow up on ganks properly (well, mby save bot).

Deman + Joe / random pro is a fantastic combo

Mmmmn. Nocturne might have a harder job ganking Vlad (trollpool), Ryze (tanky, can blow Noc's spellshield with a Q/E then snare him), & Sivir (spellshield of her own for the fear, Soraka's armor buff).

Oh, niiiice work from Sivir taking Spell Shield first to block the Dark Binding for the L1 skirmish/poke. Game paused now, though.

Dunno what happened to Ele, the few casts he did way back were actually pretty good. The latest cast I heard with Colby I just muted, couldn't be arsed to listen to that massive bashing on Malphite for some reason. Sounded like it offended him that Dan played a Malph that he plays very well instead of going whatever the hell Ele thought was better.

Sej gets first blood on Kennen after Kennen commits on Vlad; Vlad gets away on 23hp thanks to Soraka's timely Wish.

Crs get first drag, trading Kog'maw for Sejuani.

Vlad and Kennen kill each other top; Crs invade RFLX's blue and gib Ryze with Nocturne and Morgana's ults.

Is Ryze supposed to be behind in farm like that when facing morgana? Or is he just getting outplayed?

One of the good things about morgana is that you try and beat your lane opponent by constantly pushing them to tower with her W making them miss farm.

Morgana is constantly pushing, so yea. Ryze needs a blue buff to make it even farm fest, otherwise he is oom after 2 or 3 minion waves.

RFLX staying in the game via some good engagements - they've lost an inhib and a baron, but they're only down 14-12 in kills.

Nevermind, Crs score a 5-0 ace under RFLX's top inhib turret; Kog'maw/Morgana/Kennen poke too stronk.

Rammus sensibly starts red against Shaco (also starting red) - when Shaco comes to sniff around Rammus' red/double golems, Rammus sets up a nice first blood top on Riven.

Kennen gets away from Shaco attempting to repay the favour top; meanwhile, Rammus ganks bot and picks up Elementz alongside Graves' Flash.

Rammus grabs double GP/5 & Oracles to Shaco's Longsword/cloth/boots; clears wards so Kennen can sneak into the dragon pit, and RFLX get 3-0 and drag.

Rammus w/Reverie is constantly ganking top; Riven's 0/5/0 atm. Crs did grab an uncontested dragon, though in exchange for top tower.

Kennen catches Shaco in RFLX's jungle and kills him after an educated guess as to where he'd Deceive; Rammus/Kennen/Vlad 3-man baron while Riven fails at ganking bot.

Crs vs RFLX G3

Crs
Bans: Udyr, Vladimir, Rammus
Picks: Meow-kai, Janna, Koggles, Corki, Galio

RFLX
Bans: Shyvana, Veigar, Ryze
Picks: Kennen, Sona, Graves, Sejuani, Trondomere

Looks like Nyjacky on AP Kog mid, and Galio vs Trynd top. Hopefully I can LR this last game before crashing out :/

RFLX grabs Crs' blue; Crs lane-swap top & bot.

RFLX send Sona top to help Trynd survive Corki/Janna.

Graves happily ignores Galio bot and kills bot tower at 7:00.

Crs send Corki back to bot, and four-man gank Graves for first blood then grab dragon.

Kennen gets Koggles low enough mid for a drive-by pig-woman ult to 'splode him.

Meowkai ganks bot for another kill on Graves.

Trynd forgets to press R and Crs get another dragon,

Looks like Crs have this in the bag - 15-5, Crs have baron, have taken every drag fairly uncontested and have tower advantage. AP Kog + Corki poke too strong; if Trynd/Sej try to engage, Galio/Maokai/Janna stop it cold.

I find it ridiculous that the EU teams are losing purely because of lag/server issues. They should be playing on neutral servers like in anything else. Gogo orgas for giving a much needed advantage to the NA teams; yeah I'm talking about SK (Also who the hell decided to penalize them 0-1 ? random bull)
On a side note this last ro16 game should be very intense! ;O

SK showed up late, despite the time being set well in advance and being made known to both teams. Some tournaments have a relaxed approach to this, but apparently IPL doesn't. I believe candypanda was the one that was late, and he was late by about 30 minutes - an hour. It doesn't seem as though a one match disadvantage is too harsh, considering the alternative of full DQ. IPL has a schedule to keep, ideally they would have bumped up Curse VS Reflex, but then that would be unfair to everyone else.

As for servers, there isn't any 'neutral ground' that they can use to give equal pings. Where possible they have been running matches on EU (where both teams are from EU), but it is an American tournament, it makes sense that the games would be played on American servers. If there were a European tournament that NA teams wished to be a part of, you can bet that they'd be playing on the EU servers. That's why teams like TSM and CLG.eu are so smart, they realize these things, and take measures to acclimatize themselves in advance.

Fortunately the tournament proper is a lan, so there won't be lag issues. But to be honest, the only surprising results have been SK and Fnatic dropping out, and their performances are generally known to be mercurial.

Asia would be a neutral server derp.

Riot gets tournament server to east coast = profit?
Ain't that basicly what TSM did? They get like 100 ping to EUW? Which is what I get from northern finland to EUW servers, 96-110.

Not up to tournament organizers to handle that ofc.

First- check the first couple posts. TSM and CLG already qualified

Second- Its an American tournament. Not sure what you arent getting about that. If it is a qualifier MEANT to be played on NA servers, why would they make a special exception for some teams and not others? The EU teams knew what it meant when they signed up. Some practiced in the same conditions. Some didnt. Thats their fault.

Third- Fnatic wouldnt have qualified anyway. Its an online tourney. And SK has been pretty damn terrible as of late. Clearly a B tier EU team behind CLG, M5, and you can easily make an arugment they are behind Mistral (Al now I think) and Sypher.

IIRC asian servers are a few patches behind. And playing on asia just so both teams have 200+ ping just sounds absurd to me.
TSM CLG.na are already qualified. CLG TSM Dig and someone else (eg?) were invited, and the current tourney is a qualifier to find 4 teams to face off against them.
And yes, SK and Fnatic are top teams, and are capable of bar none, the best play in the world. However, Fnatic's hot and cold performances (especially in online events) is well documented. They normally rock the house at lans, but for whatever reason they don't bring the thunder online. Same goes for SK, they are capable of great play, but they are hot and cold. Both teams results show this. It's not as though they are the only hot and cold teams in the world though, teams like Dignitas are similar.

But the simple fact is, you never know if SK and Fnatic are going to bring their A game on any given day, I feel like mercurial is the perfect way to describe them.

But late game CLG's comp just shreds them to pieces.

Ok targetting Froggen is reasonable, but banning Ahri was a must. (would have said the same before the game, even though I sound like a smartass now)

He is always laughing about how op that champ is. On stream I heard him even announce his kills before he goes in. Bascially it is a mid lane kill everytime the ult is up.
but yeah overall great play by him.

Wickd did good too, having nearly double the cs of Riven.

Well, I hope they had something planned like "By banning cass aniv and galio he'll most likely take Ahri, so we'll aim to get a teamcomp that can snipe her". And I feel like Urgot taric brand udyr riven is quite capable of doing that (urgot swap, and continuing lockdown with taric brand and udyr stuns so she can't reposition with ult)... but I dunno, either GBT misplayed, or Froggen outplayed them, probably a bit of both.

The odds were against them anyway, so at least they got to pick their poison (getting blown up by ahri, instead of aniva, etc)

For the SK forfeit, teams scheduled their own times, and are expected to show up 30 minutes before the games begin so that streams don't fall off the rails. Ocelote was 50 minutes late (counting the 30 minute buffer, he was an 80 minutes late) and we were very close to forcing them to sub in someone else. Ro8 is on Saturday, and we'll be having some familiar guest casters. =)

Kind of like the TSM vs CLG scrims yesterday. If they deny Annivia every blue it's an easy game. Annivia finally has a blue so we'll see if the game turns around now.

NVM AAA gets free baron. No wards on Baron. 2 people fought baron for a while before getting more people to help so CLG didn't know it was being done.

I hate the Nocturne pick for this game. Far too soft of a jungler to deal with a massive aoe comp.

Not really surprised by this. aaa has been playing really well since they picked up Moma.

Great bans by aaa btw. Although I am surprised clg didnt pick Ahri.

Agree with Chauster there, AaA had a little bit of everything and CLG didn't have any one area focused hard enough in comp to overcome that versatility.

And lovely to see Ashe again. Dem random arrows flying always interesting

I also feel like Yellowpete is not that good with Tristana.

Yellowpete is playing ok, but GP is dead weight right now. aAa is just so much stronger in team fights.

Completely irrelevant. He went Kennen because it's a safe first pick and it denies it from the enemy team without having to use a ban on it.

Dunno why people think GP and nocturne are good lategame rather than champions who need to do well early to be very effective. (And are good at getting kills early)
I guess GP is good all the time, but needs farm to really be a big presence, if your carries are over farmed it doesn't matter if GP isn't.

I prefer the Warwick pick over noct for the way snoopeh plays.

yeah, there is no law that gg means surrender its just a compliment for the opponent. aAa should have gone for the nexus after GG was called instead of running around killing people and got cleaned up by tristana.

But that also reveals so much problem in CLG EU teamwork. If they have stalled that team fight for a few mins and let kennen and gp got another item, they would have won.

I mean even Karthus does massive damage, but so does Kennen plus a stun. Its could be anyone's game if CLG have better teamwork.

They botched their early game so hard that I'm not sure they could've kept stalling and inching out fights. I think inevitably aAa would've stopped overcommitting and just ended properly.

aAa got almost whiped once, then pushed bot, killed towers, got caught again but just walked through CLG and killed the nexus. CLG so honourable, h4h4.

Everyone exchanged GG's (aAa in chat: "VEGAS BABY!") because aAa just got baron and were picking off CLG while killing the nexus towers, there was like 3 aAa trying to zerg the nexus and they got killed off from respawning CLG members before killing nexus, so it was kinda awkward cuz the game was still going (surrender vote when out, failed 2-2 after CLG realized they hadn't lost yet), but ppl thought aAa would just spawn and obviously just push for the win.

Then Kennen pulled off a huge ult @ inner mid tower and CLG got I think 4 for 1, and honestly, they had a chance. Baron respawned and CLG decided to let supercreeps kill their inhib while contesting baron, then once their inhib was dead they just let aAa take baron too. =/ The last teamfight CLG was winning it too but then corki, leona, and i think riven just zerged the nexus and barely finished it off.

Quite exciting although I think CLG made so many mistakes, first in champ select, then in game to let aAa get the lead, then blowing their chance to come back.

Shen's countergank is too strong, gets Riven killed from an otherwise superior position. Followed up by a 2v2 mid that goes 2-1 in Mm's favor.

Fighting in all chat going on.

Eh the whole M5 vs TSM drama was manufactured. As a TSM fan I've watched all their vlogs and the only source they've given for the M5 shit talk was something one of their fans told them in stream chat. The fan said on M5's stream they were shit talking TSM in Russian. This might be true but there is no way to confirm. Wicked also talked to M5 and M5 had no idea why TSM would be upset.

Would be kind of sad if aaa ends up being the only European team at IPL4. The selected server surely played a big role here.

But on the other I dont really like m5 so I dont mind if they lose. These guys need to grow up. Or become less Russian.

The audio is 1-3 seconds ahead of the cast. It's been like that in the previous set as well. Not a big deal in game since we're not looking at the caster's lips like a tv show. It's just a little weird hearing something happen before we see it. IPL mods said they're aware of it and trying to fix it, but it doesn't look like it will be fixed soon.

Not sure why Baron said they can't talk about the IPL location. Wasn't it already revealed to be Las Vegas.

M5 Bans (First): Skarner, CassiOPeia, Karthus
Mono ESPORTS: Shyvananana, Ryze, Sona

M5 Picks: Shen, Nunu, MF, Morgana, Udyr
Mono ESPORTS: Graves, Janna, JARMANDER, Better-nerf-Irelia, Ahri

Dan Dihn: "It's odd. M5 knows Skarner is bad against the comps they want to play... except Mono can't play Skarner so it's a wasted ban..."
Dan Dihn: "It's a bit of a rock-paper-scissor sort of thing. Some team's 'bread and butter' comps just beat other team's 'bread and butter' comps."
Dan Dihn: "You're half and half on Jarvan? Well, what they want to do is jump on MF and kill her. So that's what Irelia and Jarvan are for. That also explains the Heal choice. She can counter the burst, Flash out. Nunu then needs to snowball and ult to slow the bruisers and peel to allow MF to reposition."

Wow... that bm from M5. Are there tournament admins at the qualifier? Such kind of chat in a broadcasted game should be punished by some sort of warning. Simply not acceptable to use such insults. I thought IPL is more professional than that.

wow that was amazing bait by jarvan.

Jarvan tries to take enemy wraiths...udyr comes...jarvan motions to the edge of wraith camp like he is going to pull himself over...ahri ultis in....jarvan ults udyr.

score 2-0 in favor of mono

Well if it's the Nautilus patch I don't see why they wouldn't have the hotfix. Tournament clients are usually a patch behind so if they're playing on Naut patch it's probably live servers. Shen is just strong even with the hotfix nerfs.

Exactly this... That was where you actually could see how bad ping issues must be for M5! They all kept running to where Irelia was before she dashed for like 0.3-0.4 seconds.

Nunu gets chased. M5 starts Baron. Irelia distracts. Irelia eats Morgana Ult. Mono comes in, cleans up. Free baron for Mono and 4 kills!

200 ms = .2 seconds. Normal latency is ~80ms (.08), so they have about .12 seconds more delay. If they're missing by .3-.4 seconds it has nothing to do with their ping.

200 ping feels HUGE when I have to play with it. Especally in udyr who relies so much on autohitting and moving after.

So I suppose their win over TSM in IPL Killing Spree was legit.

It has an effect, sure, but when they're missing by the margin stated earlier then it's not because of the ping since its 3x higher.

There may have been one case where Irelia lived due to ping, but overall the latency didn't have an effect on the outcome.

M5 out 0-2 vs 24th seed. Dan finding a way to plug Lynsanity.

reaction time has to be included as well but you're probably right that it was a little less. Still way more than it would have taken me, that i am not any good in reacting fast, to react!

Still gg from monoesports!
Just a little sad for M5 and other european teams, that they are at a clear disadvantage as long as they don't travel to America for a qualifier!

Now see? The Caster going mad at the end of the game? I like that enthusiasm. But I want him to be like that in the middle of the game in exciting periods.

That ace at bot lane? He sounded kinda unimpressed at the time. That's when I want to hear him going nuts.

Also they play from Russia, their ping should be even worse than for the Western Europeans.
0,3-0,4 sec sounds reasonable.

In any case this qualifier showed that cross server tournaments make no sense.

Because of this I also didnt like how the commentator was cheering so much just when the biggest flaw of their tournament was highlighted even more.

The screaming was horrible, they either need to fix the mic levels or have him talk more rather than just make garbled noises into the mic. Enthusiasm is fine but I'd prefer commentary to bodily noises

IMO they either need to make it fair (ie. one game on US, one EU) or not allow EU teams at all.

Mmm. Yes. Screaming into the mic isn't great. But his heart was in the right place and LoL Commentators tend to be very dry which I think needs to be improved upon.

Also, did IPL kill their stream? I heard Hatperson mention there was another game coming...?

The ping difference is generally less for eu to na than the reverse for whatever reason. It would also add a lot of logistical difficulty (read: delays between games), since there's a different client for each region (iirc) and you'd need to switch back and forth 2-3 times.

Well the alternative to the cross-server tourneys are no tourneys. They can't afford to always set up a live event for qualifiers and players can't afford to fly around so much or stay in a foreign country for so long.

Well I am pretty sure aaa is happy that there were qualifiers at all, even at these conditions.
But only one European team at IPL4 will be sad, and can not be in the interest of the tournament.

I think if anything they could just alternate the qualifiers between NA and EU servers so that they're always consistent in a single series. It is an NA tournament, though.

All depends on where you are in NA. From the west coast (like clg.na) you have about 0.2 I think, from east coast (like tsm) it is pretty good.
Which is why tsm is playing on eu now so often. it doesnt really make a difference for them.

Exactly this... That was where you actually could see how bad ping issues must be for M5! They all kept running to where Irelia was before she dashed for like 0.3-0.4 seconds.

200 ms = .2 seconds. Normal latency is ~80ms (.08), so they have about .12 seconds more delay. If they're missing by .3-.4 seconds it has nothing to do with their ping.

IMO they either need to make it fair (ie. one game on US, one EU) or not allow EU teams at all.

The ping difference is generally less for eu to na than the reverse for whatever reason. It would also add a lot of logistical difficulty (read: delays between games), since there's a different client for each region (iirc) and you'd need to switch back and forth 2-3 times.

All depends on where you are in NA. From the west coast (like clg.na) you have about 0.2 I think, from east coast (like tsm) it is pretty good.
Which is why tsm is playing on eu now so often. it doesnt really make a difference for them.

It also varies alot from day to day! There are days I have absolutely no problem playing on US but there are also others on which i cannot make one decent play.
And for M5 specifically I am pretty sure it is worse than probably even from the west coast to Europe West.

Meh, I know that's always the final argument but I don't really like it. Either you should run an NA only tournament or if you want european teams at your event you should at least try to hold legitimate qualifiers.

dunno, my friend with 20ping is 1800 elo in euw and 1900 elo in NA with 180 ping so not sure what to think about that but I doubt the difference is large enough for seed #1 to get DESTROYED by seed 24

Well they seemed to be coping fine in all their previous matches... Although those may have been against other EU teams and played on EU servers.

Of course it doesn't decide the games beforehand, but ask any pro player - it's a HUGE handicap at pro level. IMO you can't call qualifiers legitimate if they are run with an one sided ping advantage.

Clearly mono are better than their seed though.

I don't mind EUs having a disvantage in online NA tournaments, though. You want to see more NA in NA tournies anyway.

That logic is not what we need if we want a cross-region scene.

IMO a better solution would be kinda what ESL did with IEM where you have a fixed number of slots for US/EU (lets say 6 for US and 2 for EU, for example) and to then hold two qualifiers.

Well I don't think not letting EU teams in the tournament is a good solution. I think the EU teams would rather play with a disadvantage and have a chance to qualify than not at all. Of course everyone wants live events but it's just not possible given the real world limitations.

It's really annoying to see modern games having such issues with international online tournaments/qualifiers. SC2 has the same problem because of the fact that there is no LAN. In wc3 and BW, you could find a neutral host no matter which two countries were playing against each other because of virtual LAN programs like Iccup and Garena. Either LoL needs to find a way to create neutral hosts over a virtual LAN or they need to add more servers that are equal distance away from competitive countries.

For example, like a server in UK would be perfect for USA vs Russia, so in wc3 you would just have someone in the UK host the game on garena and both sides would have ~150 ping. Still not ideal, but much better than ~50ms compared to ~280ms. Honestly, for mono vs m5, EU west would have been pretty close to even ping but because its an american tourney I guess it sucks to force the US teams to play on EU servers. I kinda wish they woulda showed the load screens so we could see the pings, but that's just my estimate based on my experience hosting for different countries in wc3. I assume the NA tourney server is on the west coast? That makes it even worse.

With that said, M5 made bad decisions which ping shouldn't have an effect on, and Mono played great.

Yeah I know not having EU teams either sucks but I think that having legitimate qualifiers should be the biggest priority. As I've said, flipping coins for each match or set or having two qualifiers seem like the best options. Yes, they do require more effort but if you want legitimate qualifiers thats what you need to do.

I wonder if the commentators are instructed not to mention the ping disparity, I'm surprised Dan Dinh and Chauster don't mention it.

Good suggestion.

Just to recap:

AL 0-2 Monoesports
M5 0-2 Monoesports
Sypher 0-2 v8
Sk 0-2 EZ

I dont want to say the winning NA teams were bad or dont deserve it, just saying the general tendency is pretty obvious.
I think no decent NA team lost to a EU team in this qualifier with the exception of aaa 2-1 over goose.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. So I guess the names on the 2 servers are irrelevant and they just needed two servers to support the players. Might as well be EU1 and EU2. In that case they really need to have a server closer to the west coast of EU to make a neutral host between EU and USA. Probably UK, maybe Ireland or the west coast of France.

It's TSL 3 all over again.

The favourites getting crushed with a massive ping disadvantage and the fans and commentators going nuts and pretending lag wasn't a factor.

The Europeans losing in this tournament meant about as much as the Koreans losing in TSL 3 (nothing).

There was that one match where OGSMC and Thorzain both were playing in Europe and MC lost.

Their ping would have been identical due to same server so yeah....

Yeah, those games were meaningful, the cross-server ones were not.

Maybe Mono would have beaten M5 under fair conditions but we'll never know because it never happened. You can't draw conclusions from games played on 250 ping.

But it makes sense. The R is the first thing you think of when you pick AP Kog.

You're vastly overestimating "carries" and forgetting they had a MORE fed graves on the other team.

Carries rely on having tanks that can engage the fight and pressure the team enough that you get to shoot stuff a lot without getting zerged down.

EDIT: People are ALWAYS like well after lane X is better than udyr, and then usually udyr is way better in teamfights.

Alex statement concerning M5's shitty behavior during the IPL match against Mono : http://euw.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=603098

I'm still disappointed by their attitude since I really like their playstyle, I guess I'm not gonna root for them/watch their stream anymore.

Baronguy and Hatperson is not a great casting combo

A progamer on the side is multitudes of levels better in casting quality. Guess this'll have to do.

I really hope Hatperson doesn't do random shouting again, it busts my ears.

Wow... those games were huge stomps. Excited to see V8 vs AAA in the finals as both teams have been running hot during the tourney.

Can AAA overcome the ping and grab an all expenses paid trip to vegas? Or will they forget to ban Takashi's morgana and give away free wins? Find out in the next episode of dragon ball Z

Takashi hitting literally 110% of his bindings, it's not fair to play against him with 20 ping, let alone 200.

10k gold, 1 inhib down for AAA at 20 mins. AAA waiting to see how baron fight goes before moving on to game 2.

Drawn out skirmish in mid with AAA going in one by one. They surrender and move on to game two.

$5 says there's gonna be a morgana ban from AAA this time.

meh, games not even worth watching. you can tell ping is affecting the play of the EU players, and it's probably gotten to them psychologically too
aAa knows they've qualified already, I don't think they're even trying at this point

As has already been mentioned: if AAA win, they get an all expenses paid trip to vegas. V8 live in the US, muffinqt already lives in vegas, so if anyone "isn't really trying" it would be them. All expenses paid trip for AAA to vegas sounds like it would be worth 10k-15k alone, there is no way in hell they aren't playing with their full effort.

Does ping make a difference? yes, but a lot of the errors have been errors in decision making, as opposed to ping related errors (like fail smites, etc).

Game 2: Bans
AAA: Morg, Cass, Mao
V8: Kennen, Karth, Ram

Picks:
AAA: Udyr, Graves, Taric, Malz, WW
V8: Shyv, Janna, Sivir, Ryze, Vlad

Malz + WW is a great choice for AAA, should offer them a great chance to circumvent some ping problems.
Shen unbanned, and unpicked... was sure V8 would pick him up last pick, but instead they like the double AP.
Vlad going to be against lanewick most likely... will be interesting to see, I hope Eski has been practicing his vlad.

@ Redox:
Fail smite is an example of ping related difficulties, as it's hard to smite at the right time. My claim is that ping wasn't the major issue last game, fail smites NOT being an issue, supports my argument. I totally agree ping makes a difference, but a lot of the early kills weren't ping related in the slightest.

There's no need to be rude. If you want to point out examples from the game where ping was an issue, then by all means do so. Being condescending doesn't win you any arguments.

Game 3: For an all expenses paid trip to vegas

Bans:
V8: Kennen, Karthus, WW
AAA: Mao, Morg, Cass

Picks:
V8: Udyr. Janna, Kog. Ahri, Malph
AAA: Graves, Rammus, Taric, Riven, Fizz

Interesting lineups. I have never seen Ahri vs Fizz, should be really interesting. Riven Udyr should be a bit of a farmfest, and Graves Taric with the pre 6 advantage against kog janna.

Loading screen reveals ~175 ping for AAA and ~90 for V8.

Really like v8's teamcomp. Guess it goes without saying though haha. I think Ahri is just totally broken and malphite is really underrated. Kog is sleeper OP even though he was banned for ages. Udyr top always underrated. Better teamfight comp than aAa.

Rammus - weaker in teamfights
Fizz - weaker in teamfights
Taric - weaker in teamfights
-Graves - weaker in teamfights

Kinda early game/roaming comp.

V8 takes down game 3. Was a really back and forth game pre 20 mins, but V8's stronger teamfighting comp came through. That udyr malph frontline made it so hard for AAA to get in and kill kog.

Yeah, a pretty much flawlessly executed example of protect the kog.
Well, to be fair, there's not much to do against FH Udyr and Randuin's Malphite. Well played by v8, and even better picked.
currently rooting for myself.
