- I am twitter challenged : ( some how I can't get myself too use twitter; I am just not wired for it - nothing wrong with it, it's really growing massively lately, just can't tag along + Show Spoiler + I don't use mobile phones for internet or texting either; if it wasn't for them, I don't think twitter would have ever become popular

Yep, it's a micromesseging service. Any message, less than 140 characters, and you can broadcast it to the world. It's kind of like the facebook status messages. It's useful if you get text messages, less useful if none of your friends are on it.

I'm currently sitting on my ass and posting on TL.net. It is 3:59 AM and I am about to sleep. Just watched K-On. It's kind of cute and funny. Nice and light hearted. Is this 140 characters? Good night!

We need a Teamliquid Live Report twitter service so people who are outside can subscribe and not miss out on their OSL Finals.

We could do that, but I doubt that any one person wants the responsibility of watching all the games. I can't imagine someone would want to update the acct all the time, especially with all the games that go on now.

http://twitter.com/starcraftnews is a side project of mine. If you're on Twitter, follow! I post links to good games, useful threads, major news...even if you are already super on top of the SC scene I think it will be useful as a reminder of when major matches are coming up.
I made a topic about twitter.com/starcraftnews a while ago, and people posted to say "WTF why would I use this". Now that Twitter is getting more popular, I'm gaining a lot of followers.
Honestly, Twitter is one of those phenomena that you will not understand until you become a part of it.
This is my personal account: http://twitter.com/joedunn . Last week I was in NYC for a day, and the only reason I was able to meet up for dinner with some people I know (acquaintances) is because they tweeted they were in NYC as well. Twitter is a great way to keep up with all of my friends. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it sucks.

Their video demonstration doesn't show well why twitter is interesting though...

Well, I just signed up for Twitter, but I have a hard enough time remembering to update my Facebook, so we'll see how it works out.
And I don't think any of my friends use Twitter.

It's really tough to join if you don't have enough friends joining with it - Guess it hasn't gone mainstream quite yet.

i personally don't like stuff like this.. i don't need ppl knowing about aspects of my lives and i find it hard ot believe ppl will want to know either...
i even deactivated facebk (before google search was allowed to access facebk) saved myself plenty of privacy by doing that =P
honestly ppl these days put out so much about themselves it's like personal data miner's heaven... i try my best to not expose myself as much as i can
IMHO i think my friends get enough of my facts when i see them that unless given enough time to recuperate, may nvr hang out w/ me again... so i think me twitter-ing would be just bad... like salts on wound bad...
EDIT: rofl at the video

1) I use this Twitter account to keep track of SC-related things for my own reference - it's like a bookmarking service for me. 2) This account is geared towards people who are already on Twitter and use it for other purposes. They like to open up their Twitter homepage and see a SC-related link, even if they are about to visit TL.net next. The point isn't to get people to go to "a random twitter site" over TL, it's to cater to people who are already on the "random twitter site" and might want to see something about SC there. 3) I think that pro SC is important enough, and should be mainstream enough, to have its own Twitter page (hell, every other eSport/company/cause does). 4) I have 160 followers and each of the links I post gets around 50 unique clicks, so someone out there is using the account even if you can't understand why they would (hint: not every SC fan is a regular visitor to TL.net). 5) Even if all of the information I posted was available somewhere here on TL (it's not), the feed would still be useful as a "digest" of important things that are covered here. Why do people read PX? They can just come to http://teamliquid.net where there is more info etc etc, its such an arbitrary thing 6) Maintaining the feed is something I enjoy, so you're not going to dissuade me from it.

THE FAIL WHALE... win I understand your arguments and I agree on most of the points you make (I am also considering deactivating my facebook account). however, no one is sitting there with a gun to the side of your head ordering you to update twitter with useless shit. you don't NEED to update twitter with what you're having for dinner or whatever else, you update it with whatever the hell you want.
Also, if you're not interested in what people do all the time, just don't follow them. Follow people you find interesting, or people that have interesting things to twitter (like Shawn Elliot, former 1up now working at 2k Boston, who updates with crazy links of whatever he finds funny on the web).

i signed up but i doubt i'll be using it none of my friends apparently use it so i really don't see the need i'm already "plugged in" enough with digg

One of the things I like about twitter is the hash tags that people use to categorize the posts they make. It lets me find out about things going on in my neck of the woods (Calgary, Canada).
Example. I put something like this on my twitter at one point and it got picked up by starfeeder and let some more people see it that might not visit tl.net.
#yyc Check out this page for Calgary Starcraft tournament
This would then go out to anyone doing a search on #yyc or anyone following #yyc with a twitter client.
(Since twitter is limited in characters people like to use the 3 letter airport code when possible. Calgary airport = YYC)

On April 06 2009 03:31 MarklarMarklar wrote: twitter is poison in our society Hear something about this on NPR, social networking sites are essentially creating lonely people and reprogramming their brains on how to socialize (wrongly). The show went on about how we are slowly cyborging ourselves and by 2045 the singularity will emerge. And they pretty accurately predicted other technological advances like the internet and things already. I think they quoted bill gates as being the best predictor with his AI program or something and transcedental math ( has a documentary coming out later this month, and a few books already).
Probably true to an extent.
Imho I think its a waste of time/removing your privacy/and lame anyways.
Doesn't facebook already have a sort of twitter thing where you can just read people's walls or whatever? It's basically just a miniblog for people who can't put enough effort into a regular well written/though-out blog about anything important.
I don't think social network sites are all totally negative on society. I mean I've used it to actually meet people(girls) IRL. And I've also seen people's friends from their pages and sort of got to know a person before I actually met them just by looking at their page (which is kinda good and scary at the same time).
All that being said, I think I'll make a twitter account and just ramble on twittering about how lame twitter is or something and be a total hypocrite retard.

I think that twitter does have a place, if you follow whoever you want to follow. As an idea, yes, it's really pretty dumb if you haven't tried it - Who wants to know what their friends are doing all the time?
However, if you can find the time find people who have interests like you, and if you're willing to take the time to figure out what you want out of the service, it can be helpful.

One more important thing is, you need to use Twitter on various platforms to appreciate the whole idea behind it (and why it's getting so big) - as a Firefox addon, desktop gadget, on iPhone/BlackBerry and other smart phones, as widgets embedded on your blog etc.
