O_o i mean.... isn't bragging saying something you can't back up? it goes without saying that people who've got into good colleges have worked hard, and stayed up countless nights. and it's not like people are randomly posting in a unrelated thread or speaking in that condescending bragging tone;like , "Hah bitchs im going to MIT" hah bitches I go to MIT just kidding well, about the hah bitches part at least ha bitch I DON'T ;p though your sponeg is pretty cool I got into MIT back in the day (8 years ago) but decided not to go, just didn't fit me very well. I was much happier going to Notre Dame.

Why so skeptical? Besides the fact that Harvard eliminated their early admissions a few years ago, and usually comes out with all the other Ivies on the same date in early April.

Within reason, it doesn't matter much where you go for your undergrad years, whether your aim be industry or academia. If you are ambitious, view college as a chance to prove yourself and to find what excites you intellectually; rather than a challenge that you must overcome in order to get a token of approval. In this information age, records of your extracuricular achievements can be broadcast to the world, and they matter a lot: I haven't a doubt that Dries Buytaert (who developed Drupal while in college) would find any problem at all with employment upon graduation, whatever his grades or school might have been. It is only if you do nothing significant outside of class, that your record becomes critical. And if you want to continue into academics or research, undergraduate by itself means quite little. Wherever you go, find a professor whose field interests you, and offer your help--which at the beginning may be not much more than a pair of hands and eyes--on her research. Her recommendation when you graduate, and the tangible achievements, perhaps papers, then accompanying your resume, will help tremendously in finding a sponsering graduate-school professor. And having a professor on your side when you apply to top graduate schools will do more than you might imagine in getting in. After all, the reputation of schools turns on the quality of the research they produce, not on having a lot of "good grade" students. In summary, you will rise or fall to where your effort and ability combined place you in the echelon of things, wheresoever you start that first insignificant year of your first school. My own background comprises MIT BS and MEng in CS, and while I have no complaints about how things turned out for me afterwards, I see now, looking back, that I could have gotten so much more out of the time I had. In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Pirsig writes that students who are in college for the first time will never appreciate it; and ironically, or prophetically, I read that book my freshman year there, and yet still didn't appreciate it. The chant of the old: "If I could only do it again..." So do just accept it as it comes, and relax by pwning some n00b like me in BW.

Some others from here also visit this site but don't have accounts (har har I don't even post much on TL). I believe the banner read "The ONLY Institute of Technology" ... but good luck tomorrow hearing back from them, if you get in you should come. Actually "That other institute of technology" is correct. > ![]() Some caltech students went over to MIT and did a bunch of pranks and one of the pranks was that banner. MIT was quick to respond though and replaced the banner with "the only institute of technology." You would do well in caltech, klizzer :p edit: To jpavel's post. Yeah I actually agree with this alot. Going to such a top school like caltech will just make you work really hard and you could get close to the same end results if you work just as hard at another school and find good profs etc. imo going to someplace like caltech or MIT will only really put you ahead when you have a huge amount of ambition for your future (then again, someone with so much ambition could probably do well without having to attend top schools).

Very True. If I didn't go to caltech I would probably be a lazy ass playing SC all day and not doing any work. It sounds like fun though. :p

I think it's just because caltech admissions are alot more straight forward than MIT admissions. There are ALOT of people at MIT that would never get into caltech, and alot of people at caltech that would never get into MIT. That's why you should apply to MIT and caltech simultaneously.
