This thread leads me to draw the conclusion that a lot of you are choosing fields you're already good at or you concider "easier" than other options.
Maths = easy in highschool, crutching on that & ignoring other subjects 'cause you're smart enough to already know your destiny ---> number crunching through as fancy a college as possible to get to numbercrunch at the highest pay possible?
Sorry, but isn't this all slightly self limiting and narrow minded even? I realilze some people aspire to strive for excellence in one field, but isn't it way early to pick which one?
I've always done the exact opposite, when i feel something is easy and unchallenging, i explore other academic branches where i know i've struggled earlier.
I went to a "profiled class" in junior high, focusing on maths & science, got grades enough for any highschool - chose a social sciences line with a focus on history & languages. After that, instead of "sealing the deal" with law, economics, litterature or diplomacy, i looked at fields in which i'd concider myself weaker and chose medicine as my current pursuit.
I know medicine & "technology" (engineering, physics, pure maths, CS) are both very broad fields, but say you've been angled towards either (or something else) throughout your life - wouldn't it benefit you more to choose the other? I think so at least :p

I got accepted to UC Irvine and UCSD waiting on Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Duke, Rice, Amherst, Williams, Berkeley and UCLA.

No, what you actually did was realized that doing pure economics/law/literature/diplomacy won't get you any paychecks and decided to follow a career that'll actually feed you.

undergraduate doesnt matter. its where u go for graduate school.

wow, must be a bother to go through all that application stuff
when i graduated from high school in germany it didn't even occur to me that some universities could be better than others. i just naturally went to the one that was closest to me, like (almost) everyone else did.
i never knew about the competition among universities in other parts of the world before i learned about korea and came to teamliquid.

That's going a bit far to say it doesn't matter, especially since going to a good undergrad school certainly helps in getting into good graduate schools too. Of course it's not the end of the world if you don't go to an Ivy league school either.
