It's ludicrous Post it anyway The man was a partial cripple who worked for a circus (which we can easily deduce from the tent reference). He was known as the world's shortest living adult (duh). Someone was cutting short pieces from the end of his walking cane (which we don't even know he used). Consequently, he thought he was starting to grow and would eventually lose not only his notoriety but also his job (so not only can this guy not read, but he can't tell if he's short in comparison to every other thing in his life).
dang, I was so close.

the two sums are the same? shouldn't there be zeros behind the numbers on the right?
they're the same aren't they? Assuming we're actually adding them down each column.
Just have to realize that 1 9 is the same as 9 1's, and 2 8's is the same as 8 2's...etc.
I think they placed it that way in order for you to be able to 'see' the answer even if you suck at math.
Is the positioning of the right sum supposed to indicate place holding zeros that were omitted? Unless that is the case this doesn't seem like much of a question. :x
I just added the right side and got 137174205 and 1083676269 on the left
but yea, the placeholders are the key here. because if you just look at the columns they are equal on both sides 9 only on left 1st colum in row 1, then on the right side you have a 1 in each row on column 1 which equals 9 and so on.

Well... if no one else is gonna say it, I'll say the left one since to most sane people they add up to much more than the right side.

it would be the same
edit: unless the numbers are actually what they are. in which case it would be the left side
Hey, I've got dibs on the obvious answer. :p
The only hard thing about that riddle is the internal uncertainty. Obvious answer, easy.
the left one because the numbers on the left should be pushed to the right
If the columns are supposed to be added the way they're lined up, they would add up to be the same.
If they messed with the rows and you're just supposed to add the numbers together, the left one will be larger.
Hm spaces are not the same as zeros (although i think they used to just write 3 21 for 3021 before they made up a specific sign for the zero). Numbers on the left side are all bigger, so left side.
Hey, spelling check tells me it's heroes, but not zeroes, but zeros. Ridiculous.

Use a better dictionary, one that uses proper English. People tend to call it British English though.
But it seems like both zeros and zeroes are correct.
