I was about 400 feet from the building where this happened when it happened, and all I noticed out of the ordinary was an ambulance showing up. I walked back to my dorm, started watching a movie with some of my friends, and about 30 minutes later got an alert telling me there was a murder in the GLC and that we should stay where we are. But that was *all* they told us. Basically "you might be in danger, but we're not gonna give you any information that you could use to protect yourself with." They didn't even release the race of the suspect until 5 hours later. They tout their damn alert system as if its amazing, but its downright useless. All the alerts they give out are vague and don't tell you anything useful. This isn't the first time they've sucked at giving out info either. Someone jumped out of the 7th floor window of my dorm last year, and it took them *36* hours to even email us telling us that something had happened (and they were very vague about that), even though there was a dead body lying outside the front door. I find it absolutely despicable that newspapers 30+ minutes away get information on this stuff faster than the students that go to the damn school. Enough of my ranting though. This murder is fairly unbelievable. The place it happened is rarely visited by anyone other than graduate students, and is fairly quiet. On top of that, the girl listed her murderer as an emergency contact. Makes no fucking sense atm, but they won't release anything before they go to court. Yeah, I'd say either way people are going to panic - especially after what has happened previously at V-Tech...better to release details of the threat-level and the nature of the crime and if the suspect is at large and so forth. I suppose they think it might be panic prevention by not whipping people up into a frenzy, but as I mentioned it's not really going to work here. They obviously knew what happened, and didn't need to release all the details, but people are immediately going to assume the worst. Full-coverage (especially for people within the immediate vicinity) and reports (within reason) would be more useful in this situation imo.

Due to lack of parenting (fathers at war, mothers at work) children "managed" their own interactions. We weren't very ... hmmm.. how should I put it .. "experienced" at the age of 6. 4 years of that kind of environment and you learn to look after yourself. Even after we migrated to Australia I remember a lot of that stuff still used to happen. I sympathize with the African-American's for that simple reason. If my "idol" was 2pac and I had no daddy to keep me in check, I KNOW I'd grow up a thug too. In fact, I WAS a thug until education got to me. Thank god it did. Still can't process beheading someone tho. That's beyond the scope of my experiences and wildest nightmares.

I'd say people panic either way, and I'd much rather have the information either way. At least then people would have a reason to panic, and information they could use to better prepare themselves. Last night, we didn't even know how the murder happened, and I'd say knowing whether it was a shooting or a stabbing is pretty damn important to me.

Yeah, a point I forgot to include...it's the most important factor, knowing how the murder occured. You could relax about 10 notches knowing it was a knife related death. As horrible as it is to be able to relax after a horrible murder has occured.

Edit: Also sucks how the girl just wanted to continue her education and probably expected a peaceful life at V-Tech, then some nut job does that. Fuck these people. Seriously.
