My take on prostitution is a little too complicated for this particular thread. I certainly hesitate to give blanket approval, as is the expectation, because I think the commodification of the female body is always problematic. I don't really see prostitution being all that much worse than wealthy old men marrying trophy wives. But I do think that the commodification of their bodies will always stand in the way of women making the transition from being viewed as passive sexual objects to autonomous agents capable of making their own decisions.

What really irks me about this whole situation is our society's virginity fetish. The fact that someone is willing to spend almost 4 million dollars on this woman's virginity perpetuates the cultural myth that an unbroken hymen is a woman's most valuable asset. It implies that she will be worth less once she has lost it. Will anyone spend that much money for her *second* sexual experience? Probably not.

When we put far too much value on virginity, we start shaming women for having the audacity to have sex, and hyper-sexualizing younger and younger girls. And we still do live in a world where sexism exists. The most shocking story I've read in a while involved a man in California selling his 14 year old daughter for some $16,000, 100 cases of beer, and some meat. Humorously enough, he went to the police when the buyer failed to pay in full, and promptly got arrested for human trafficking. I shit you not.
