But rather than go into a long discussion about the relative roles of countries in WWII I felt it simpler to just point out in terms of sacrifice and endurance the Soviet Union surpassed anything a Western country could do. I'm not denying that the USA had an important role (as did every country save France). You had your heroes (RAF), we had ours (the resistance). We had our dumbasses/cowards (Petain), you had yours (Chamberlain?? his whole handling of the Munich agreement, etc. Deciding not to attack when 9/10 of the German army was in Poland). Dunkerk was as much a defeat for the English forces as for the French. If you wanna talk about courage, why not talk about WWI? Why say "every country but France"? Do you know anything about WWII? Don't you know that France wasn't the only country invaded? Why don't you talk about...China? Why don't you talk about Italy's role? Your sentence is quite disrepectful towards all French people who fought in the Resistance, probably one of the most courageous acts I can think about. Americans were brave to come to Europe etc. but even that, being sent by your home country to help another one, cannot compare to freely choosing of resisting in a climate of intense fear, when you know other resistants around you have been tortured to death. Same for Russian people, their only choice was between two guns. Anyway. | ||
