I have though about this from time to time. I know the majority of everyone probably thinks they are smarter than most just because the fact that everyone thinks differently and uniquely.
Most of the time I think I am the smartest one out of my friends and family. Then I wonder how that is even possible when my family is so retarded. Then I wonder why is it that I don't have any friends that are completely smarter than me in every way?
My friend Aaron for example has passed all kinds of college math classes including a bunch of calculus shit. One day a couple of us were eating and we had to pay our bill and figure the tax and tip. Jake owed like 13 bucks or something and he only had a 20. Aaron owed like 13 and I owed like 11 for a total of 37 bucks. None of us had enough cash to change Jake's 20. I had my 11 in and Aaron had his 13 in and he couldn't figure out how to make it work without asking the waitress for some change. But I said everyone put all their money in the pot and just have Jake take out his change, it seemed simple to me. Aaron called it abstract thinking.

I find myself quite intelligent and quite dumb at the same time. I am well read and educated, good at problem solving and logical thinking... but my reflexes to any given situation are really poor, I can't do quick thinking and I screw up most of the time saying what I should not or not responding in a smart way...

I have one of the worst memories of anyone I know. I forget names of people; famous people (actors/actresses/directors), friends I haven't seen in a while, if I just met you I'll forget your name by the next time I see you. I forget names of places, only remembering the names of prominent cities, street addresses you can forget about. I occasionally forget the names of items, particularly items with unique names like a movie title or a book, etc. But I also forget more generic words. Like yesterday I forgot the word "crouton" for describing a toasted cube of bread that garnishes salads. I forget where I place things all the time. When I'm out about town I have to constantly check my pocket for my keys, just to make sure they're still there. Similarly, I keep my wallet in my front right pocket, because I don't feel it well enough in my back pockets and I have a panic attack if I think even for a moment that I've lost it.
However, I don't think I'm stupid. I've scored between 130-145 on every IQ test I've taken. My ability to reason seems better than most people I know. I recognize patterns very quickly and complimented by my sharp critical thinking skills I jump to (usually correct) conclusions faster than most of my peers. I research pretty well, but that's a skill you learn in highschool/college and has very little to do with natural ability.... though I kinda had to rely on researching skills more than most since I have great difficulty memorizing random information that I wasn't using for anything in the next couple weeks (bad memory- see above).
I have one friend that's pretty bright-- almost as good as me in pattern recognition and logic-- and has a tremendous memory. It may be because he's a trained actor, or it may be a natural talent, but he remembers the actors names in just about every movie he's seen as well as what movies they've been in. He never forgets people, etc etc... basically everything I forget, he can remember. A talent I'm quite jealous of.
Family: well, they produced me, so they're not idiots, but they have nothing to apply their intellect towards beyond their rather mundane jobs, so they've never really displayed any sort of genius around me.
Friends: My closest friends are around my intellect. Helps with conversations, don'tcha know?
Aquantences: Some are pretty bright, others are remarkably stupid.
Girlfriends: I've never dated anyone as smart as me... something I regret and hope to correct.
People I've met: Many aren't too bright, but I've met people much much smarter than me... mostly professors in college.
Everybody thinks they are smarter than they really are. Only a select few have an intelligence as high as their ego. Nobody is going to come out and say that they are dumb as rocks. Why? Nobody likes to admit they are below average.
As for me, numbers would put me above average in intelligence but honestly it all depends on how much faith you put in those numbers and which definition of intelligence you use. There are all different types of intelligence beyond just doing well at school, getting good grades, and scoring high on an IQ test. Now generally people who are above average in intelligence do all 3 but it is in no way mutually exclusive.
Am I smarter than my brothers/friends/parents/whoever? Questions like that that are not black and white. I could say yes and cite certain aspects of me that are well above average (like my computer knowledge.) However if I were to, for example, bash heads with my dad over business or management, I would be completely out of my league. Similarly, I have friends who are infinitely more intelligent in their professional field of choice than I am.

i guess i can say im smarter than most of people i'm around... as for classmates, i don't do too well in academics as many students, but that's because im not willing to work harder for perfect grades which i don't need... my sister isn't too smart from what i've seen from her so far so yeh.. i have some friends which I can tell who're smart, and as for the rest i don't really have intellectual conversations with them so i can't say for sure... and for my parents and relatives, i'm probably smarter than most of them but they have more wisdom ^_^

I Indirectly stated I am one of the smartest people I know of my friends and family. I never said I was smarter than anyone. I often type how I would talk without thinking over how it sounds to the reader. "Is & Are" are a small pluralization error. You could even say "Is/Are" is a small pluralization error. If you wanna get technical you didn't use quotations or capitalizations. And I'm not speaking I'm typing. Hypocrite

my friends are all pretty solid all-around and a few are truly brilliant. my father is another level above me and the rest of our extended family in pure iq - it took him a year and a half to get his masters and phd in electrical engineering, and i never seemed to pick up concrete subjects as effortlessly as he did. the rest of my family is still pretty good but nothing special special, a typical professor and doctor family.
being smart is completely worthless just like my writing talent, as i'm still working on fixing my study habits to get my grades up. as it is i'm totally fucked =( i'd like to point out though that tl.net has some really bright regulars and it's always a joy to read their posts

erm, I disagree. What makes you think people surfing this particular website are ANY different from the average internet user/human. it is true that people who have access to the internet usually have better education/are generally a lot more experienced in various things. but that doesn't automatically make them "smart". see examples given in this thread.
the allure of starcraft, economic and numbers managements, internet strategy games, socializing over an online forum, constant reading, etc all point to a higher likelihood of the participants here being smarter than (at the very least) average groups of people. denying that is a blind stab at political correctness which counts for nothing here anyway.

I think I'm smart but there's tons of people out there who are smart who make me look stupid. Plus however much natural intelligence I may have I've done zero work to cultivate it.
EDIT: The other important thing to note is that smart can be very specific. Very few people can be smart at a large variety of things.

i only got over the i'm-better-than-everyone mindset senior year in high school. it's a bit difficult because even now people think of others in terms of intelligence, which isn't even clearly determined yet. is it one quantifiable abstract measurement, a conglomeration of multiple iqs (i forget the name of this theory, psych was forever ago), etc etc? the word 'smart' has become overused and with it everybody's esteem of it as a measure of others. instead of looking at skills, talents, social skills, work ethic, and personality, how 'smart' someone is is overweighed and so hard to overlook.

Over all, I agree with you. In fact I dont even believe in some thing could be smart or not smart. I think everyone's actions and decisions are nothing more than mere reactions to the rest of the world. The world make you smart or dumb. You don't make your self smart.

What makes you think people surfing this particular website are ANY different from the average internet user/human. it is true that people who have access to the internet usually have better education/are generally a lot more experienced in various things. but that doesn't automatically make them "smart". see examples given in this thread.
not so much just internet access, but look at the attributes of this site in particular.
it's kinda like visitors to some advanced math proof site will generally be smart people. obviously not that extreme, but that's an analogy.
in this case, it's mostly for people who follow starcraft, which are mostly people who played the game a lot, which correlates with people who have a natural talent for it, i.e. smart people. so there's some self-selection there. of course that doesn't work for everybody, but from what i've seen there seems to be a trend.
and there's also other types of selection, i.e. banning, hehe.

After reading oliver twist early in my life as well as seeing Aladdin, I've always prided myself in being more streetsmart than booksmart. Almost to the point where it would be ok to call me ghetto.

Are you smarter than all your friends? NO. I'm one of the dumbest out of my friends.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN TL.NET? Most, but certainly not all. And even if I think I am academically better equipped than some, that doesn't mean I do not respect them.
I am quite smart, everyone always tells me so. Tests have shown this too.
All my friends are university guys, but I feel that I outsmart most of them. There is one though, studying to be a surgeon, who has me beat probably. He learns so fast, it's surreal.
In my class Im one of the two people who have passed every obstacle in one try. I tutor some also. We'll see how I cope when I study Psychology though, because then I'll meet the Gymnasium folks.
My dad is also very smart. He has a ton of knowledge and would royally whoop any tv program. Sadly enough he lacks in the social aspect. My mom is the opposite, kind of cute to see.
I think that TL harbors some great intellectuals. A lot of the regulars are very intelligent, I believe.
After I went offline yesterday, I realized my point wasn't 100% right. Of course people who achieve higher levels of education (i.e. college degree/doctor title or w/e) are likely to be smarter than the average person. However, and that is my point, you don't get a "super smart" label attached to your forehead as soon as you manage to sign up for some easy course at a very mediocre university where the standard is pretty low. at least then you are way "dumber" than the average Harvard student, eh? As a conclusion: Higher levels of education aren't totally unrelated to intelligence, as they imply you are more intelligent then the "hillbillies", but in no way can you conclude that, automatically, college students are smarter than the average, just because they happen to be visiting a college.

I strongly disagree with your conclusion that anyone who follows Starcraft has a natural talent for the game, as well as your conclusion that Starcraft skills are anyhow related to intelligence. For example: I am a college student, I don't consider myself particularly dumb, but I've seen total dumbfucks rule at Starcraft, just because they have shitloads of experience and/or a lot of luck. Following your reasoning, they should be "smarter" than me, which *might* be true, but is highly unlikely.
