If you're using leaves you need a butane lighter, you need to have the lighter to the leaves the whole time while you draw the smoke into the bong/whatever, and you need to hold that hit in for as long as possible. Even still, of all my friends trying that, I was the only one who could trip off leaves only. They needed to use 5x extract at least to feel anything.
I had good trips by being completely naiive. I had read only good things and didn't even consider that I may have a bad trip. The number of bad trips I read about people having on Salvia is shocking to me. If I still did Salvia, I would probably have a bad trip just because of all these horror stories. But I think the reaction to Salvia is different in different people. I've seen videos of people babbling random shit and trying to move around, and laughing hysterically. I just laid down and basically went into a dream world for a few minutes.
I would start on a low extract (5x) or even leaves if you can trip on that (most people can't, but I did). Alternatively, when I got high first and then took Salvia, it was a milder effect. I still had visuals and weird thoughts, but I stayed conscious the whole time and didn't feel like laying down and didn't mind talking to people or listening to music. When I was just on Salvia I liked it quiet so I could concentrate better and not get pulled out of the trip. That might be a good way to ease yourself into it, but I don't know if that's a common effect or only happened to us.

Sorry to hear that, Woof. A bad salvia trip is... well, about the worst thing one can experience. It has taken me over a year to even come close to coming to terms with my experience, and while I think I am mostly OK with what happened to me, I still get pangs of anxiety when I think about salvia (and it's been over 2 years now since I've done it.)
If you've had a bad experience with it, my personal feeling is that you should avoid using it again. I went back and did it a second time, and it was horrific - luckily the dose was less, though. The second time I did it, a friend of mine did it for the first time, and his experience was so bad he blocked it out, but suffered a few anxiety attacks at the slightest recall of it. I remember him moaning in pain as he went down on his side when it kicked in - seconds later it kicked in for me, and I stopped thinking about him.
See, the situation with salvia reflects the insanity of our drug war. You have far safer hallucinogens like psilocybin and mescaline which are illegal, and then you have extreme hallucinogens like salvia (possibly the strongest psychedelic there is, competing with smoked or injected DMT) that are totally legal. I'm not for prohibition of salvia use, but safer alternatives should be available - ie marijuana (many people buy salvia as a legal substitute for marijuana, and indeed it is often marketed that way.)
Something else weird is that many people hear the horror stories of salvia, and it makes them want to do it even more! So, keeping this in mind, my recommendation to anyone who wants to explore salvia is that they do it sublingually or smoke the plain leaves. If an extract is used, it should be the weakest. Better to not get off at all than to go mack trucking into salvia land.

i dont know tho...im considering giving it a 2nd try with a smaller dose and like 5x prolly. If i enjoy it then i guess ill work my way up.

This is some of the absolute worst advice you can give. This is the peak of irresponsibility, and this is how you get people into really dangerous situations.
One of the first things anyone should know about drugs - and this goes for ALL drugs, d00ds! - drugs affect different people differently! You didn't get off on 20x? There are people that get off on the plain leaves!!!!
Your "advice" could send a sensitive first time user far beyond hell.
The correct procedure for using any new drug is to use the lowest active dose first. This is because you don't know yet whether you are sensitive or not. Best to err on the side of caution.
I was one of the idiots who started on x20 salvia, and unlike you, I did "get off" - so much so that I had to battle with intense anxiety and depression relating to my "trip" for over a year. And you know why I started with x20? Cause an irresponsible kid told me not to mess around with the weak stuff - go right for the strongest stuff! Yeah! Good idea!
To be fair, I was very irresponsible too - I should have done my own research.
I've learned! Please learn. Don't go around dosing other people, man. Dose yourself - and you should be more responsible about that, too, it sounds like.
