An Ethiopian immigrant was convicted Wednesday of the genital mutilation of his 2-year-old daughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in what was believed to be the first such criminal case in the United States.
Khalid Adem, 30, was found guilty of aggravated battery and cruelty to children. Prosecutors said he used scissors to remove his daughter's clitoris in his family's Atlanta-area apartment in 2001. The child's mother, Fortunate Adem, said she did not discover it until more than a year later.
During her father's trial, the girl, now 7, clutched a teddy bear as she testified on videotape that her father "cut me on my private part."
It's been a while since a criminal news story has sent shivers down my spine and made me quiver in disgust.

Tradition practiced in some parts of Africa.
It's always hard to say which traditions should be stopped and which should be understood, but I think this one should be discontinued... ASAP

i only studied it in africa and it is very common (something like 30 countries practice it)
i kno some countries in the middle east practice it too
but itsfucked up - they use rocks and glass and shit to do it so theres lots of complications in the long run (pictures speak a thousand words.. unfortunatly..)
they dont really have a legitimate reason to do it either- just [fucked] moral beliefs, traditions, and culture

Thats what i dont get. How does cutting a woman's clitoris have anything to with moral beliefs. If that was the case they should cut our eyes for watching porn, sew our mouths for cursing and cut our hands for punching people. And cut our dicks off while you're at it.
I understand some ideas and cultures are different cause i lived in both korea and usa but this is really harsh.
edit. i think its more immoral cutting a woman's clitoris than leaving it be and having her enjoy sex.

Some places they cut off the clitoris, the vaginal lips and then sew her shut down there. The men let there pinky nail grow long and use it to open up the goods so to speak on the wedding night. Can't remember where its done but its still common practise somewhere in africa.
The main idea behind female circumcision I thought was to prevent her from enjoying sex to keep her from cheating on her husband or something?
Can't really remember the real reasons why. Anyone who does know? It's a gruesome but pretty interesting thing with a long standing history of use.

No, he wouldn't be, since I think ethiopia is the country that practices it most, I believe. Being circumsized as a woman makes you able to marry over there and probably in whole lot more african countries.
Anyway, female circumcision is fucking sick and totally useless (it could also be said that male circumcision is useless, but atleast that doesn't prevent the person from taking pleasure in sex)

Dunno how it works in the US, but if he took her there to have it done he would still get convicted in Sweden.

Misogyny is still quite common here in the US and in many other countries. Female circumcision is just another way to prevent/punish women for having sex. Really fucked up.
