So my first day ever of highschool. Coming at me. I know some of you have mixed opinions about highschool, but i figured i would post anyway. Despite the fact that it's....you know, school, i'm sorta excited. Not christmas excited, but still in a fairly explosive state. Anyone got anything to say before i head to to bed to get an early start? Wish me luck.

EDIT: Hey everyone lol it's 8:00 and raining like hell so i'm off! Thanks for the advice i really appreciate it as some of it has actually been constructive. Again, Wish me luck
EDIT 2: It's about 12 hours later and now i'm back to a comp. first day was fun. didn't really do anything though. lotta hot girls in a few classes. one played footsie with me. it was fun. i'll be damned if i can find a sport to play though. you see in the past i've played pretty much every sport at some time or another but can't really find one that i'm good enough in. plus i'm not in that great of shape. guess i'll move my sorry ass over to rpf's thread.
|
|
i dont know about you but... when i was still in highschool, the day before the first day of school meant no sleep. my mind raced about if i had all of my supplies and if i should get my textbooks and what not. defintely the night before my nuts quivered beyond its normal activity.
|
It sucks. I mean it's kind've cool to be in a new environment and w/e, but really nothing special. Just get a good night of sleep, lay out some clothes, and eat a good breakfast.

lol the first day of school around here is pretty much nothing (they just hand out papers) and you don't even have a locker yet. I'm not worried, just kinda excited. I'll update the first post tommorrow if the thread is still around.

if you make friends with good people, u'll do well in school more easily than if u made friends with shitty people.
your first year is your most important academically because if u don't keep up in ur first year, everything u don't know will make u do even worse in later years. on the other hand, if u keep up during first year, the l8er years will actually seem to get easier since everything keeps making sense while everyone else starts getting confused.
if u are smart, all you have to be is somewhat sociable and people will want to hang around with u. on the other hand, if u don't study as much as u should, there will still be people to hang out with, but the good people that you really want to hang out with (imho the good study good personality good all around well rounded type of people) will probably not hang out with u so much.

High school's overrated the first year. After that it is underrated. Sophomore/Junior year you better study your kungdaengi off for SAT's and get good grades.
|
Things upper classman hate: 1) a kid who acts like he knows everything in class 2) a kid who tries to crack jokes every 5 minutes in class 3) a kid whos really stupid and makes the teacher mad all the time
just avoid those things and you'll be cool HS is great and you've reached a point in your life where you can start developing "true" friendships (though this is debatable) and you should just try your best to make strong lasting relationships :D do good in school too and make your family proud

It is quite different in the US, but in Canada it wasn't that big a deal. Its not hard if you try.

Take the first kid who looks at you funny and beat him up in the hallway, that way everyone will know not to fuck with you.

He's not going to prison.

My grades have been going down every semester... So yeah, it definitely gets harder as it goes on.
|
i'm actually a pretty good student so far in school, i don't think i've ever had a C in a class. I'm also honors/advanced math/biology. lol i'm not an idiot.
and to new_construct: I'm 14, going to be 15 in a month. I was born on a specific date which requires me to be a year back than what i would have been. Basically if i had been born 13 hours earlier i would be going into 10th grade right now.
I made the decision awhile ago that i was mature enough to handle to General forum, if thats what your getting at. Besides, i think there are alot of other people here that are much more incompetent and rude than I am.
|
I'm 14, going to be 15 in a month : )
But I'm going into 10th grade ^_^ I think the best thing to do is to not get on anyones nerves early on because you want to have a decent first impression on who you first talk to. Just kind of lay low until you realize who is cool to talk to and who you should watch your mouth around and you will be fine.
Of course don't forget about doing well in class either : ) But mainly if you have a good start, find some cool people to hang with everyday, everything else will come easy.
Also watch out this friday ^_^ I don't know about your school but mine was pretty rough on the freshmen.
Good luck ~
|
Thats kind of a running joke around our school, how freshman get beaten to pieces. It scares most kids to pieces until they realize it's a joke. I know a lot of upperclassmen so i'm not too worried.
|
You're going to fucking hate it. Kill yourself ASAP.

I feel oooooooold...
High School is the best time of your life, however, you only realize it after you are finished.
There is no build order for making it at school though Just be yourself and true friends will follow.
|
Tommorow is my first day of Senior Year. I am fucking scared, I'm realizing I have a horrible GPA & ACT score. I don't know what college I am going to, I still need 20 hours of Service Learning & I need 1.0 Credit still in order to graduate. Although except that I know for a fact that it's gonna be awesome.
Rules 1. Don't think you are something special because upper classmen will see this and not like it. 2. Stay on you're studies because when you get your Quarter & Semester report card you will either be extremely content or pissed at yourself. 3. Make friends with people you would actually like to be friends with and who share your hobbies. 4. Stay away from the sluts/whores/bitches, etc.. Make friends with nice girls. 5. School pride is lame so don't show it. 6. DO NOT GET INVOLVED IN DRAMA. 7. Have fun because it is fun sometimes.
|
High school can suck, depending on what type of person you are. I was the quiet, shy, nice kid that a handful of the preps picked on. Just ignore the drama, don't give a fuck what anyone thinks about you, and enjoy it. Take risks and get involved. I did neither and I kind of regret it. You only have to go through high school once, so make it count.
Edit:
You are not your GPA. You are not your number of friends. You are not cooler because you know upperclassmen, are neighbors with a teacher, etc.

true.
you need to throw down early and establish yourself.
(actually I'm not kidding all that mutch)
Now.. other handy hints:
- if you have a crush on a girl follow it up and - if you really like a girl and (think) you love her .. ask her out! The biggest regret you'll ever have when you grow older is (oh man there was this really nice girl. beatuiful, smart etc. I was too shy to talk to her. Instead, all the big muscly idiots talked to her, corrupted her and now she's a dumb bimbo, whereas her and I could have really had a meaningful relationship). It's happened to me (as you can tell) - on another note... if you get your heart broken... who gives a shit.. there's always another one.. you're young and you're EXPECTED and allowed to make mistakes
- work hard in school and develop diligent work habits. If you don't work hard in highschool laziness will spill over into the rest of your life. Again... take it from someone who knows
other than that.... THINGS ARE NEVER AS BAD AS THEY SEEM!
and also... THINGS WILL ONLY GET WORSE.. NOT BETTER.. DON'T SEEK RESPONSIBILITY. RUN RUN FAAAAAAAAAR AWAY FROM IT!!! BE A KID AND HAVE A KICKARSE IRRESPONSIBLE TIME!
good luck in life (and love).

Highschool is a fun time. Except the homework. Enjoy it.

|
Well, instead of spouting off lists of rules, I'd much rather run down a list of my own mistakes. Maybe you can learn something constructive.
1.) Don't get too caught up into a girl. You're in high school. You aren't going to marry her. It's unlikely it'll last all that long anyhow. So, when you do break up, take it in stride. Don't pretend it never happened or ignore the fact that it sucks, hurts like hell, etc. Take a reasonable amount of time to "grieve" and then move on.
2.) Don't get bullied or pushed around. In high school, I got picked on by the football quarterback (6'2", ~265 lbs.). After about four years of it (started in middle school), I turned around in the middle of my biology class and flipped him off in front of the entire class, as well as about five friends. He told me he'd kill me, so I told him to go right the fuck ahead. He never picked on me again, and hell, we're pretty friendly with one another now. Just grow a pair and stand up for yourself.
3.) Take risks. There is no reward without risk.
4.) Get involved. I hardly did anything in high school except go to class. I didn't participate in any sports, clubs, activities, programs, etc. Honestly, I don't regret this too much, but it would have been nice to be a little more pro-active. I just wonder what "could have been."
5.) Don't take anything too seriously. Really--lighten the fuck up. Don't stress about shit. If something embarassing happens, it'll pass. Rumors are just stupid, and they'll pass, too.
6.) Don't be concerned with what others think of you. It doesn't matter what they think. If a friend or family member has an opinion you don't like--that's different. That does matter. Unless you don't like them.

Can be awesome or a pathetic time of your life, depends on what school/classes you going to. For me its awesome and I'm in my 2nd to last year of it. How old are you?
|
find smart friends, study hard ;D
hs will be a breeze
|
Man, I can't believe you get to start this late. I started my first day of senior year aug 9, it's awesome so far since I get out at noon.
|
Most of the advice is pretty good stuff. But the most important thing I can tell you is also the simplest: just be yourself. Although it'll probably take you a good portion of that four years to figure out who you are exactly and who you want to be.
Also, make lots of mistakes... and learn from them. =D
|
Honestly... honestly.. if you need to actually study to get grades, you may as well hang yourself now. I never once studied for a single test in HS, and I got A's and B's in almost every class (except the ones I did none of the required work in, but I still passed them).
Just make sure you have fun in HS. Once you're out things change a lot, and you'll be wishing you were back in it. HS is all about having fun, because this is the end of your careless days. Once you're done it's time to start moving into the real world, either through college, or getting a job and moving out on your own, whatever you decide. At the same time, don't get too caught up in the HS bullshit that so many people become so attached to. There's no point in it, and the faster you realize that the more fun you're going to have.

Yes, but in most cases you will need those study habits for college/university, unless colleges are very different in America.

It depends on what college you go to. If you're in a larger one, then yeah, you'll probably need it. If you go to a community college, or junior college, it's like HS all over again.
Personally, I can study just fine when I actually need to, but when I already know the material, I find it nearly impossible to look at what I already know for several hours. I guess I was just able to get away with procrastinating and not having to try so I didn't. When I stopped doing anything for a while my grades slipped a bit, but when I took a study hall instead of a seventh class my grades went right up to the top of all my classes again. People who once thought I was an idiot were asking me for answers and shit... then I left the school for homeschooling, which was probably the biggest mistake I made.
So, another thing to not do is leave the school for homeschooling. I did it for incredibly stupid reasons that I will not share with anyone, and looking back on it I now wish I had stayed in the highschool I was in. I'd probably be in Loyola University in Chicago right now instead of working if I had stayed in (I'm going to college next semester for sure, finally), and now I'm gonna have to go through the shit of community college, and then something bigger (UIC, Loyola, whatever).

im 29 ive had my 10 year hs reunion and well i had a great time in hs. granted most of my time in school was spent leaving school (ditching) but i meet my best friends there most of wich i still hang out with and such.Have fun man enjoy it and i know i and all my friends wish we had been a little more serious about school. so my advice enjoy it , ditch, experiment and what not but try to stay focused and do well good luck yo.

One thing to remember is that if you fuck up when you're a freshman, you will always be remembered as that freshman that fucked up. Just be confident but not too uppity. (I'm a freshman myself, but in college )
|
wow you will start perhaps the best stage of your life! awesome, my advice is planify your time wisely, skip classes from time to time, but also study hard when you have to, hang out with the new friends you will make (hopefully some well rounded people) and be yourself, dont be afraid of messing around, high school is a time for experimentating and have fun!!!
also follow the advice of mickey or whoever was the guy that talked about love, never ever get to attached to a girl, its better to have a lot of female friends and hang out with your male friends too!! also if you practice any sport, dont be afraid to keep that up in HS and well best wishes to you ENJOY IT BECAUSE IT WILL NEVER COME BACK!!! GOOD LUCK!

high school is EASY PEASY LEMON SQUEEZY
don't be afraid to join clubs, go after all the fly bitches (lol?), defend your opinions, make new friends, talk to teachers. know that everyone has gone through shitty times in high school but things just seem to work out in the end and you'll be just fine. apply early to colleges, don't let your grades slide just because you are lazy, but always have fun and fit in games of starcraft and soccer and whatever whenever you can. working yourself to death is not worth it at all.
get more comfortable with your parents and get some advice for life in the future, because if everything goes as you are probably planning, these are going to be the last four years you're living with them. keep in mind that a few really good friends is much better than a social butterfly who is acquaintance to everyone, and (in a similar fashion) everybody's friend is nobody's best friend.
my little sister is in the same boat as you are (metaphorically. if you really do try to get in her boat i'm going to kill you.) so i especially wish you the best. good luck, have fun, don't die, kick ass =P

im also the laziest bastard in the world when it comes to work, i didnt turn in 1 assignment for my 2nd semester of biology, i get horrible grades, but rape the shit outta state testing towards the end of the year, (everything 90's/advanced).

Heh, high school isn't that bad, compared to middle school, it's just shittier teachers and more HW. I have 6 honors classes out of the 7 I have (orchestra isn't honors) and it's just dumb as fuck... Only doing the honors for the credit and GPA and shit, school isn't that hard for me, it just pisses me off from StarCraft and stuff I wanna do .
I was nervous too the first day, but that's the only easy day if you have any honors, even on the first day I got HW from 4 of my classes...
Just stay relaxed, it worked for me... but I gotta go, fucking English project.

Ah I miss that feeling of asking a girl out that you really like. It seems so much more difficult in high-school. 6-7 years later it will seem funny.
But you don't know that, and you won't know that it was one of the most enjoyable experiences in your life untill it's over. Just be yourself and do what you like. You'll be ok.

The easy step to doing well in highschool, socially at least, is playing football.

Don't underestimate the classes, and don't over estimate yourself.
I went into high school thinking I was the fucking shit (all honors classes), and didn't think I had to do the homework. The classes really weren't that hard (though they were much harder than middle school), but because of my attitude, I did terribly. Going into my senior year I have a 2.7 GPA because of it, and I severley regret my attitude during the first two years of high school.
Other than that, high school is really fun. Get in with a tight group of friends rather than having many shallow friends.
|
I'll be a senior this year and from my experience, I think's it is a lot better than middle school b/c of less rules you have to deal with. You'll like it, you'll get to know a lot of people and make many new friends.
But still, school sucks.

Going to a bit high school rocks. There are 4000 students in my school, so it's really easy to make friends and get involved in clubs. Social boudaries are less severe than in middle school. It's definitely more fun that middle school, but the work sucks (6 APs and orchestra right now for me).

Let me just say this to ts. Everyone gets the willies when they go to a new school/ high school. I moved over 15 times and been to over like 10 schools and still i feel nervous. I was mad nervous when i first came to middle school than i met my closest friend. Have fun. First few days it will be hard but you'll get used to it. And if you arent shy dont try to wait for people to be friends with you break the ice first.

Looking back however, I think highschool was more fun than I realised. However, highschool would've been more fun if I was more the person I am now, than I was back then; less shy, possibly nerdy and more 'I don't give a fuck about what you think'

also, i had SO much fun in school it was obscene. i welcomed that school as my home away from home. made some amazing friends. it's going to be a good time. especially as the years go on. it only gets better. and in my opinion, the classes dont ever get harder. you get more adept at half assing shit in an acceptable manner.

you will have a lot of free time in high school A REAL LOT
do not waste this time playing computer games, or posting on internet forums
meet friends, date+talk with girls (later fuck them, or sooner)
USE your time wisely, later you wont have it learn languages (not sure if it is important in the USA, but you can learn nearly every thing in few months, apart from languages..)
learn playing the guitar, hell, play like crap, but it helps with girls also piano just 5 songs, but it will allow you to impress people later and actually is nice, because later you can just practise more
work out, maybe play basketball or something at some school club
socialize
dont mix vodca and cognac
dont become negative or bitter
try to get involved in few thigs, you will learn the basics and you can develop later (e.g. greenpeace, fuck greenpeace, but you will meet nice people there and get general idea etc)
learn the important things every man should know: proper English, word. excel, common sense, swimming, tennis, snooker/pool, ping-pong
practise some martial art?
learn to program yes, programming not real programming. excel VBA is enough
actually try to become good at overall programs like word or excel, they are useful in life
technically if you would pick up the most beautiful girl at the first day you have a high chance start fast, later they will have someone! it works
I listed a lot, but you will have a lot of free time
I think I will never improve my German now, or learn Swedish because I dont have the time and when I come back from work Im fucking exhaused like take a look at FrozenAbitur, he learned Korean alone

In other words besides just building a college resume, you have the time to get some life skills during high school.

Don't study your ass off, make sure you know the stuff alright, but for gods sake. Getting a C+ or B @HS is no big deal. You'll realize that when you move higher, everything is still easy as shit and as long as you dont fail or get really shitty grades in HS you'll be able to pwn College etc..
Point is, if you take HS too seriously you'll be so god damn tired of studying when you're about to hit college, which means you'll fuck up there instead. So.. Rather chill and have loads of fun in HS and get serious afterwards, although I've heard college is loads of fun too (I live in sweden so I wouldn't know >.<)

HS sucks. I get in fights, I'm hated, and I'm practically infamous. Thank god I'm starting in a new school tomorrow :O
IF ONLY IF ONLY MY GPA WAS HIGHER UGH DAMN U GOD DAMN U /ends rant
Depending on what you want out of your life think about this: FRiends you meet in high school, 90% of the time, you will not meet again later in life until your reunion. Lay off any serious relationships, do what you want to do in the future and not fuck up like I did. Friends are temporary but mandatory things that keep your status in High school. There's this class pyramid you have to understand and blend into, it's stupid yes, but in a big school it's practically survival. Study hard, get friends that suit your needs, and take every opportunity availible.(CARPE DIEM!)
And o yeah, don't do drugs, not even marijuana, it does you no good in the long run.

High school is fine, don't sweat it.
My biggest advice would be to mingle and make friends with as many people as you can. I had a small group of friends in high school, who were all very close to me, and that was fine, but looking back I kind of wish I had been more sociable.
