Earlier today, twitch.tv streams went down as the site went into maintenance mode. Twitch issued a password reset and stream key reset for all users. A problem with a CDN partner caching is cited as the issue, though many blog comments are questioning the validity on the blog. I hope the user accounts are not compromised, and knowing twitch.tv and their excellent tech team this should be some minor mishap. However, standard precautions with any sort of password resets should apply!

You can get 1080p quality for free here. Kind of weird since some of us had to pay for the same quality on Twitch.

Yeah lots of people are saying they could access people's personal messages, see their email address, give moderator powers etc.

Also the "maintenance" banner is titled hackflag. http://www.twitch.tv/images/hackflag.png

Seems like they got hacked and there was a massive info leak.

would be nice if they upgraded their hardware soon also, lately ive been laggy when it comes to peak hours for streaming, while normally i can watch a stream with 10k people in it at 1080p no lag, but if its during a weekend during a tournament, 480p with slight lag

Interesting.. InControl said earlier today that all twitch partner payouts had been delayed by a month. Could be related?

Apparently whole loads of people were getting logged in as other people and gaining access to dashboard and all sorts. Very much not a minor problem.

Now it's changed back to the regular twitch logo. Interesting :O

That's definitely not a good thing, I hope nothing bad happens, but that's a truly naive thing to think at this point.

Fishstix insists that Twitch wasn't hacked, I don't think they would cover it up directly if they were.

Well, even if there database isn't directly compromised, this situation where account cookies/passwords are getting mixed up by their servers is enough of a big deal to warrant a long maintenance.

They don't have to get hacked to fuck up account access, can be bad caching like they claim.

Twitch ‏@TwitchTV 2h

FYI: No one is actually logged in as the wrong user, it's simply a display bug, changes can't be made to accounts, ect. Don't panic!

From the tweets, it doesn't seem to be a huge problem.

I'm on a 2MB connection (ie not the fastest) and I can run multiple 1080+ streams on twitch at the same time and never have any issue. It would bottleneck on my end before theirs.

I can stream multiple 1080+ streams from youtube at the same time with no issues, one stream at 720p on twitch stutters for me.

This does not sound conclusive. If there was not security leak, why do they have to reset all passwords? The message "we were not hacked" sounds just like semantics to me; it look quite like there was a security leak, else the password reset does not make sense.

Incidently, if you know the url of a stream, and its live, you can still watch it via livestreamer/VLC combo even though twitch is down. Watching snipealot2 like that atm.

It is a good thing then that Blizzard only allows twitch as their tournament streaming site, eh? Having a "backup site" is a bad idea obviously ... as is competition.

Oh my, I never recognise how big Twitch has gotten.
But seeing the empty stream page makes me kind of... anxious... about the future of video game streams (monopolies aren't a good thing).

Passwords bad enough, but how about credit cards info? As stated, some of us payed (for what Youtube viewers gets for free, and I know I *don't*, as paying customer); now lousy 5 bucks does not affect, but the CSC and number ARE major concerns.
Working for Bitdefender and doing a browser for avoid leaks and phising is hard - but server side neglect is huge ! How the hell one can log on with another's account?

You forgot the "again". Ustream was good until they decided to be retards and make everything worse and worse.

International streaming was like: livestream --> ustream -->justin/twitch --> (own3d)
Some minor streaming sites were also used for games but they have/had no real relevance.

This is one thing you absolutely do not have to worry about. I'm 100% positive that twitch does not store your credit card details. They are being passed to their payment provider without being logged or anyone at twitch even ever seeing them

Edit - source: I've PCI certified a payment gateway. If something like this was to happen, it would rain hellfire upon Twitch.

Other than that, as someone on the first page mentioned, people were apparently being logged into different accounts via cookies. "CDN issue" makes sense in that case and the password reset is just a precaution to make sure those that were affected by this didn't screw with the other persons account.

Edit: Nevermind, they clarified that this was just a display issue:

They could view private messages and dashboard stuff, but I'm not familiar with the dashboard stuff and how it displays passwords or credit card info or anything like that. So yeah, it's definitely some form of security leak but I don't think they were actually hacked. Nobody actually broke into their systems to do this (as far as I know), they messed everything up all by themselves.

I can't but help feel bad for the streamers. This is pretty bad. I hope as well if they aren't up for Homestory cup. That the money I gave them will be kept by Take, yet refunded from Twitch.

New information here: http://blog.twitch.tv/2013/06/site-outage-passwords-and-stream-keys-reset/

TL;DR: DON’T PANIC – We were not hacked. Our web CDN made a requested change without obeying our caching ruleset, which resulted in some caching that had a (very, very) slim probability of revealing a limited amount of your account information. To be cautious, we’re changing stream keys and requiring a password reset on your next login. Finally, no payment information was exposed as we do not store any of this information.

when twitch finally comes up, it'll be the biggest lagfest in the history of streaming since every Joe is trying to log on and get their passwords sorted, start streaming etc

Only sensible way is to bring it up in pieces. By region or whatever. Who knows how they will decide but count on some people being in the dark while others may or may not have access to scheduled programming for the immediate future....

Twitch.tv is bleeding, less than 10k viewers, pages randomly don't load for me, they have some problems and panic doesn't help them. It sucks for HSC and Redbull training grounds.

RedBull starts in 5 hours, it's too early to say it will have an impact on them.

Their website is down, but their video service wasn't affected afaik, so as long as HSC can get the stream up, there shouldn't be any problems (except maybe for the chat).

When you have every single twitch user that wants to log in try at the same time, that will happen. It will take some time.

Relax. You're getting 503 errors currently due to their appservers likely being overloaded by the crowd rushing in (it's their front-end servers replying that they can't reach the back-end.)

It'll take a good while before a service of this magnitude returns to normal operations, but I bet it'll be back just in time for HSC.

As long as you see anything but their maintenance page, it's up and will return to normal soon.

Working for Bitdefender and doing a browser for avoid leaks and phising is hard - but server side neglect is huge ! How the hell one can log on with another's account?

This is one thing you absolutely do not have to worry about. I'm 100% positive that twitch does not store your credit card details. They are being passed to their payment provider without being logged or anyone at twitch even ever seeing them

Edit - source: I've PCI certified a payment gateway. If something like this was to happen, it would rain hellfire upon Twitch.

Other than that, as someone on the first page mentioned, people were apparently being logged into different accounts via cookies. "CDN issue" makes sense in that case and the password reset is just a precaution to make sure those that were affected by this didn't screw with the other persons account.

Edit: Nevermind, they clarified that this was just a display issue: https://twitter.com/TwitchTV/status/348265280155295745

Obviously they can't leave it like that though

Well, you are probably right. But working for an AV company makes one paranoid... and I remember GomTV not so long was hacked and they had a DB into a text file?! (perhaps I'm wrong, with user/passwords inside).

As said before: it likely doesn't work for you (or anyone) right now, but it's still in a "coming right up" phase. It will take them a while to get back to normal, give them an hour or so.

These are probably just idle viewers staring at a black screen. Would normally be 10 times as much.

Thankfully there are Azubu and Youtube streams for this. WCS needs that as well, this shows again you cant rely on just 1 stream service.

Yes, "the internet" is not exactly the same for everyone. Depending on when you've hit the site, it may have worked for you and will continue to work if you don't reload. For anyone still affected by ERROR/503 pages it'll take just a little while longer (to reach their website/stream browser.)

That actually means it's up - it likely does try to reach their application servers and they're overloaded

Edit: more detail on that: when you hit the "ERROR" page ("Unable to forward this request at this time.") it's their Level3 CDN replying, saying it can't reach the application servers at twitch. When it loads forever, it retries that connection instead of just sending you away (and then if it can't reach them, goes back to telling you it can't reach them for a while before retrying.)

I'm 100% positive they're fully aware of this and it's only a matter of (a very small, or smaller than before amount of) time, hehe.

See my edit above - keep refreshing as long as you see these errors. They basically mean that twitch is still in the process of coming up and they're confident that it's done any minute now (otherwise, they'd probably show you the maintenance page again instead.)

It would most probably be possible to do some steaming on smaller platforms but I bet there is a contract between Take/Blizzard/Twitch.tv so its not directly related.

If they do it on another random streaming site, they are not going to get paid. I don't think TaKe wants that !

I see that embedded twitch links into facebook works. I see now ESL twitch channel INTO facebook, without open a new tab in Firefox.
Try to make a new post with the stream link (for eg. www.twitch.tv/esltvitaly live now) publish and clic on PLAY button under your message to watch channel INTO facebook..it works for me, the window is small, but it shows!

That's their embed player being served for facebook from a CDN. Here's an easier way to get there:

http://www-cdn.jtvnw.net/widgets/live_facebook_embed_player.swf?channel=<channel name>

e.g. TakeTV: http://www-cdn.jtvnw.net/widgets/live_facebook_embed_player.swf?channel=taketv

(Yes, that's error 2032 that people have been reporting up there. Some channels, like esltvitaly are still live though)

Still not working? HSC has been delayed for 2 hours already. No info whatsoever from twitch what the problem is and when they expect it to be fixed?

Hopefully, it stays that way a little while longer because I'm enjoying all the non-laggy streams (:

Or more likely they don't have anything new to say from the last one. If you don't think they are working as fast as they can you are silly.

Twitch is back! Everybody refresh and rejoice!

If you hit a 403, keep refreshing. If you can't seem to get on it, hit these links for HSC VII embed players:

Main stream (Nightend vs MC!) http://www-cdn.jtvnw.net/widgets/live_facebook_embed_player.swf?channel=taketv
B stream: http://www-cdn.jtvnw.net/widgets/live_facebook_embed_player.swf?channel=taketvbstream
C stream: http://www-cdn.jtvnw.net/widgets/live_facebook_embed_player.swf?channel=taketvcstream

If you get a 403 Forbidden error still, it's because you're still logged in and are getting redirected to the password change page (which seems to be not working). Try a different browser or browser mode where you're not logged in (if you cannot log out, change your password, or do not want to delete cookies) to be able to watch streams.

Because of the earlier security glitch, every Twitch user is required to change their password (when it's finally working).

If you guys keep getting 403 - keep refreshing.

You're cycling through servers, eventually you'll hit one that replies fine (and then eventually they will all reply fine.)

I'm not getting any 403 anymore, so chances are you aren't getting any either If you do, make your hit count!

I was already logged in and getting 403 right after the twitch page was showing up, so I just hit stop on Firefox before it switched over to the 403 and it changed to the pw reset page instead.

For some the Change Password page still doesn't work. Try deleting your cookies so you're at least logged out and able to watch streams.

Just a heads up, even when twitch is having problems you can still watch streams using alternate methods, such as
http://forum.gamesports.net/dota/showthread.php?19423-How-To-Watch-Livestreams-without-browser-(with-player)

It actually better quality when twitch is "down" then up.

Anyone else having issues? Someone has tried to change my account password like 4 times in a row this past week. Is this happening to anyone else? Never had any issues till they made us change our passwords.
