Jokes aside and seeming the discussion is getting a bit stale.
At which point do people feel progaming teams should start making a contingency plan? Do the teams with Korean players (or foreigners in Korea, but I guess there's little discussion there) have a moral obligation to help their players get our of the country should war start? And their families? Who here actually believes progaming teams are going to be able to get their players out should the need arise?
Major companies I imagine have policies for this sort of thing. I highly doubt most progaming teams will be able to do much should it come to war. I imagine getting a flight'll be near impossible.

Good to hear, I hope you all have a good time there. Most likely it's all just talk from North Korea, but at the same time, they are crazy enough to actually launch missiles, so I don't know what will happen. They sure have gotten themselves into quite a mess now. How can Kim Jung Un get out of this without losing the respect of his people? (Those who do respect him, that is)

First of all, Kim Jung Eun is likely not in control of NK. The guy's only 29. It's his uncle and plethora of senior officials who are really doing the show behind the curtain. Kim Jung Eun is just the poster boy of their regime. Secondly, even if they wanted to commit some sort of a kamikaze mutual destruction, just taking out SK and maybe Japan doesn't cut it for them. To them, their eternal enemy is the US. Until they have ICBM with nuclear warhead that can reach American mainland, it's not going to happen. Obviously NK wants to get something ( or more like a lot of things) out of raising the tension, but you are fooled if you think they actually want a war. Starting a war is the fastest, surest, and easiest way for the NK regime to collapse and they know it.

This is the first time I see Koreans actually worried. They usually don't even think about this, but today it feels different. I hope it's not justified.

This thread is so filled with ignorance it's really quite sad.

Still not worried, until it's a warning from a government that hasn't cried wolf a million times I won't consider moving.

You should be worried if you are in Korea, from the simple fact that this new leader of NK still doesn't appear to have the firm control over his own military, and one wrong move from anyone from the North, whether it's Kim Jung Un or one of the rogue generals, SK looks like they plan on fully retaliating in non-diplomatic way.
|
But asking from ALL my Korean friends and family this week through chat and voice, honestly they didn't worry over NK's threat. Or should I say, they choose to ignore as they had enough of it.
|
This news is already a couple of days old, but I don't remember seeing it in the thread, so here goes:
WASHINGTON — As North Korea hints at new military provocations in the coming days, the United States and South Korea have drawn up plans to respond more forcefully than in the recent past, but in a limited way intended to prevent an escalation to broader war.
[...]
American officials described the new “counterprovocation” plan as calling for an immediate but proportional “response in kind” — hitting the source of any North Korean attack with similar weapons. For example, if the North Koreans were to shell a South Korean island that had military installations, as has occurred in the past, the plan calls for the South to retaliate quickly with a barrage of artillery of similar intensity.
South Korea’s national security director said Sunday that the North this week might launch one of its new missiles. If so, Pentagon officials said they would be ready to calculate its trajectory within seconds and try to shoot it down if it appeared headed toward impact in South Korea, Japan or Guam, an American territory. But they planned to do nothing if it were headed toward open water, even if it went over Japan, as one previous North Korean test did.
Source
It seems steps are being taken to avoid any provocation from escalating, although the article says the US is concenrned about SK retaliating too strongly (which is, of course, why they drew up these plans).

I think Koreans are so used to the threats from the North that they are not worried and don't realize that this time it's way more serious than usual.

No country is going to attack directly first.
North Korea has done many worse things before (bombing of the airline jets before the olympics, assassination attempt on the south korean president, torpedoing of the submarine, shelling of the islands, etc...)
Once Koreans start packing up and walking to busan, then i'll get scared. until then, the biggest worries I'll have are my upcoming classes and midterms.

Now North Korea is telling all foreigners to leave South Korea. South Korea is going along at a normal day.
They have not yet mobilized any conventional army forces, which they would need to do to defend if they choose to do a missile attack.

I saw this mentioned a few times already in this thread and thus this is not only directed at you:
Are there actually any sources for this or is it just an assumption?

There's always the possibility for an accident that escalates. You're definitely right in that nobody is going to TRY to start a catastrophic war: the only way it can possibly end is in huge damage to Seoul and the destruction of the North Korean government, and neither country wants that. Hell, even looking at the bigger players of the US and China, both want to stay at peace because we're huge trading partners. The only way this could turn into anything more is a tragic accident, or if North Korea finally decides that it has nothing left to lose.
Of course, what I'd really like to see is for China to start putting serious pressure on North Korea. That could possibly solve this incident without bloodshed, which is the best possible outcome for everyone.

U noe, the boy who cried wolf story?
Or the King You light the signal fire beacon to fake his general to rescue him?
Cold wind will blow, if every1 ignore North Korea.

Since NK's internal matters are one of the most secretive ones in the world, the closest thing to a "actual source" may be what comes out of the mouths of North Korean defectors. One can either choose to assume that a 29 guy, who by the way was pushed on to the political scene out of nowhere by his dying father, rules NK, or one can choose to assume that it's his Aunt and her husband Jang Sung Taek along with the senior high ranking officials who were at the inner circle of Kim Jung Il who are actually in control. I would think the latter is more reasonable and likely, and that's really what all the defectors say they think is going on.

My best guess is. Kim studied in Switzerland and is rumored to love Europe. He loves western food (pizza), and western sports (Basket). He came home, taken over North Korea after his father, and do not know how he'll improve this situation, when he is surrounded by the communist party and military despots. Maybe he wants South Korea and the U.S. to attack to end the misguided dictatorship once and for all. He tries to accomplish this without North Korea need to attack. Aggressive wording, closure of telephone lines, where the closure of the free zone with South Korea threatens U.S. with nuclear weapons, warns reopening of that nuclear facility.
Kim Jong Un must have felt that he had a heavy burden to bear when he took over the legacy of the father and grandfather. It is also likely that he wants to give his people share in the benefits he has come to know in the world. But he will make sure that power he is granted and try to live up to expectations. In the past, he has ended up in a grotesquely game.
Something I really would like to know is whether this thirty year old already taking his own decisions or if he asks aunt and uncle for advice all the time.

Not saying he's a "good" guy, but I have a feeling that 60-90% of all the decisions made are actually not his. He's just a puppet acting like the head image of North Korean politics. When all he want to do is eat a pizza and watch some basket. Joking
