People ask me all the time about the quality of some of the stores I buy from, and if they should invest in quality. I always tell them that I would rather have a wide variety of things to wear, rather than spend the same amount of money and only have 2 shirts and a pair of pants.
Funny how he says his cheap clothing lasts forever... and then goes on to say that he buys a lot of clothing. Like no shit your J.crew Factory shirts will last forever when you rotate through 30 of them.
On the other hand the circlejerk over some high quality pieces (for example r/goodyearwelt) is just as ridiculous.

yeah i'm all for quality but sometimes the hype over shit like loopwheeled or handwelted or whatever gets ridiculous

If you look it the other side, buying cheap clothes allow you to have a lot of things to wear, which is fine. I'd better have 10 differents pants which would worn out after 6 months if I wore them every day than 2 pants that'll last 5 years but I have no choice in what I can wear because I only have two pants.

I do think its relatively easy to go overboard on concepts like value, particularly on boards/forums dedicated to those interested in fashion. Often times it teters into the area of spending more than you should and finding ways to justify it.
Even for someone who has some spending money to blow I have a hard time buying 3 ocbd's for $90 total or a nice piece for $90.
The point the above commenter makes about variety is well founded too; I think this is a big part of the reason stores like H & M are succesful too, people can buy a large diversity of pieces and looks for a low price.
Regardless I still think unique pieces, wool/leather and formal stuff is best to always buy quality.
Strictly speaking, questions like this tend to be more of a question of economics and personal finance, though.

value is getting something for 60% off by stacking coupons

That's an odd definition of value.

i wear the same thing every day during the winter so what's the big deal guys
|
what do you wear every day
|
i wear underwear, other clothing, and shoes every day i think i tend to change my underwear every day tho
|
I dunno about you guys but I'd rather have one pair of Goodyear welted underwear I can wear everyday rather than 10 pairs of mall tier underwear
|
Everything I own is Goodyear welted because I am an authentic who lives authentically by sitting in chairs all day.

I like intellectual workwear, margaret howell, etc. Somewhat anti-fashion, anti-yuppie/GQ. It's the only proper attire I can wear. Just kopped some MHL stuff on deep sale.
Been eyeing the kapital ringcoat:

probably in navy. Looks like something I should try on before blind kopping. Might make a trip to NYC/soho in the near future and do a run through DSM/Greene street/La garconne.

Alright so since the weather's getting cold, I opened up some drawers full of knits/sweaters/scarves that have been in storage for a while. When holding each article of clothing up to my nose, I noticed a slight musty odor. Do I need to dry clean all this shit now? And is there any way to prevent this in the first place?

yes, dry clean everything, I store my knits in plastic ziplocks but that's cuz I move a lot. I'm still gonna send everything to the drycleaners.
