Starting on Wednesday January 4th 2012 at 20:00 GMT (+00:00) until late night January 9th!, we'll be playing through over 100 games as quickly as possible while raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, which focuses on research and education for preventable cancers.
That's right, more than 100 games. We're not cheating by picking 100 short games either. We've got Final Fantasy VII, Ocarina of Time (MST) and Earthbound. We have Mario, Sonic and Samus, we've got Half-Life, Portal & Demon's Souls and classics like Contra, Metal Slug & CastleVania. Hell we got just about everything. We even have a whole section dedicated to awful games, so if you're a fan of Bubsy 3D, Lagoon or Trio the Punch we got something for you too! Check out the Marathon Schedule over on the SDA marathon page for a complete list of games and a time schedule that may well end up being accurate.
But what's special about this marathon? Well the main part is that it is being run by SDA, the premiere Speed Running Website on the internet that people in the know head to when they want to find high quality, confirmed legitimate speedruns for games. SDA, like TL, have a top-notch community and a very high standard for posted runs. We've got runners with world records and people who can destroy games that most people struggle with. The stream runs all day and all night, delivering non-stop speed running action.
On top of that, Awesome Games Done Quick offers a fantastic commentary stream to go alongside the gaming action with a lot of chat interaction. With donation incentives like naming characters, requesting challenges and getting people to dance like an idiot celebrate like a boss and a whole load of incredible prizes, from hand-made plushies, pixel art perlers and a load of games, collectibles and so on there's plenty of reasons to watch the marathon. Check out the second post to find out how you can make an impact on the Marathon with our donation campaign: Name Tifa ESPORTS!
So why am I telling you guys this? Well, as you may know I travelled to the last one (that's me dancing for TL) and there was no way I was going to miss going again. I'm flying from London to DC just to take part in this and we, especially me, need your support! Tune in to the marathon and maybe make a few donations and tell your friends. I will be playing Bayonetta on Saturday Friday, Jan 07 7:20am GMT (GMT+00:00) (sorry europe =( ) so please tune in and do some shout outs for TL.net!
Other TL members will be there running games too: Heidman is running Double Dragon 2, Contra, Super C (Contra 2) AND Super Punch Out. Heidman is a monster at these games and they will all be worth checking out. His Super C run from last year (bookmarked at a highlight moment!) can be found on YouTube here. Also, super best friend Tri-Hex will be doing a live Yoshi's Island 100% on Wednesday, Jan 05 11:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) which is guaranteed to be incredible for those who have and haven't played the game. He's gained a small following on our forums so I hope to see some TL people hanging out there too! We've also got a bunch of TL people who will be at the marathon but won't be running games so come join in and give TL a big presence!
I'd just like to take this oppurtunity to thank everyone from TL who donated and watched last year. There were a lot of you making shoutouts and joining chat and we really felt it. It was awesome to see so many of you guys chipping in and you really made a noticible impact on the viewer numbers and donation totals so thank you all.
I'd also like to thank TL.net for giving me permission to promote this event and HawaiianPig for making this post amazing.
So, what games are you guys interested in this year?
Each year, AGDQ has lots of donation drives for various challenges, naming characters and pulling off certain tricks. In the AGDQ`11 thread, Jibba mentioned grouping up to name a Chrono Trigger character which is a great idea for TL but it never really got off the ground. I loved the idea so this year I want to group TL together under the banner of ESPORTS. Now ESPORTS fans don't pull punches and neither does Team Liquid, so that's why I propose we go after naming Tifa from Final Fantasy VII, ESPORTS. Now you're probably thinking "Why Tifa?, Why FFVII?" that sort of thing so let me explain.
Final Fantasy VII is not only the longest run at the marathon, but will also have some of the fiercest donation competition. I can almost guarantee that Cloud will have someone drop a whole load of money on for a name. Last year we had a single $1000 donation for Chrono in Chrono Trigger and FFVII is even more famous than that. So why not go after Cloud? Well, let me explain.
Cloud is a fucking pussy.
He's a whiny loser and is only really used in the run because you have to use him. The main team for the run is Cloud, Tifa and Cait Sith. Tifa is incredibly strong, incredibly important and also, the sexiest character in the party (sorry Cait). Now lets think about who we want flying our banner of ESPORTS. Do we want whiny loser kid who is only there because he has to be, fluffy toy thing with a cat that isn't there for most of the start of the game, or Tifa, who is not only a key part of the squad for the whole game (she gets the most screentime in the run) but also the most powerful squad member? I think it's clear! We can get a good 8 hours of spreading ESPORTS through the stream. Also it means we can make bad jokes like "I'm donating for ESPORTS" or "you're killing ESPORTS".
Simply put, Tifa gets the most screentime, is the most powerful and the most sexy character. A perfect fit for TL and ESPORTS.
Now obviously you don't have to donate for this if you don't want to, it's cool. If you want to donate for a challenge or for another game, go right ahead! If you don't want to donate or can't, that's fine too! I think with a nice group effort like this, the TL community can really make their mark on the marathon. If you want to donate to name Tifa ESPORTS, all you have to do is tune in while watching the marathon, then click the chipin page. Once you've sent in your money by whatever means you want, just leave a chipin comment saying that your money is towards naming Tifa ESPORTS! You can also shoutout to TL, your dog, house or anything you want there. There might be a start point for donations, so if you're unsure if they've started yet, just ask in chat!
I look forward to seeing ESPORTS deathblowing all sorts of shit in FFVII land!
Speed runs are awesome. I think there will be a huge amount of viewers, siglemic is going over 8000 for his SMB64 7 days marathon. I'm sure an event with SDA backing can do a lot better.
I will tune in for sure, I love watching speed runs...though they kind of destroy my gamer pride and they make me feel like if I started gaming yesterday
The year was 2010. The place? Awesome Games Done Quick. After years of bloody warfare in the Kanto region, the Elite Four reigned supreme, their rule enforced by the brutes hanging at their belt. Then, just when things looked bleak, one man, one hero, stepped up to save the day. That man... was SMK.
Foretold by prophecy, he had come to these sacred halls, alone, to challenge the tyrants of the Pokeworld.
...Well, as alone as you can be with a level 100 Mew.
But this is the end of his story, to see how he got there, we must go back, back to the beginning. My momma always told me the beginning is the best place to start a story.
Meet guy. His name is SMK. Meet girl. Girl is an electric mouse who follows guy around. But this isn't a romantic comedy, so girl will never get past level 10 and will be put away at the first possible instant. Like I said, this story is about a guy and his level 100 Mew.
So we have our intrepid hero, as he walks through some grass. Sorry Mr. Nidoran (male), we can't take a level 4 pokemon, we need to keep pressing on and...
Huh... well... shit. Guess you might come in handy. Since you're only level 1, let's just get you into a fight, get some levels and...
Okay, now this is just bullshit. Whatever. Let's just go and get Mew. Along the way, SMK picked up a venonat, for he had the foresight to realize that Teleport would one day be needed, and the mystical Official Nintendo Pokemon Strategy Guide (tm) that his long lost father left him told him of Venonat's aptitude towards that move. Trainers were defeated, Gym leaders trampled under the might of level 100 Tackle. After months of questing, SMK finally obtained the prized Teleport TM. And then...
"WHAT? YES IT CAN! THIS IS BULLSHIT!"
Not the first time Nintendo's lied to our hero. Shaken, but not stirred, he picked himself up and searched all throughout the land for someone to learn teleport. Someone like...
Well, he LOOKS trustworthy. Wait no he doesn't.
Okay, teleport obtained. Now on to Mew. I've heard some rumors as to how to even catch a glimpse of the legendary pokemon, about waiting until after S.S. Anne leaves the harbor, selling your bicycle, having a pokemon with Strength push aside a large rock on a hidden island...
OR HE CAN JUST FUCKING APPEAR. I WASN'T EVEN IN TALL GRASS. I WAS ON MY BIKE. ON A ROAD. AND I BET YOU HE'LL JUST HIT 100 IN 1 FIGHT LIKE LAST TIME RIGHT?
FIGURES. He gets handed a level 100 Mew on a silver platter. Typical JRPG BS. What's next, he gets handed a mystical item by a mysterious old man?
Is that a... water bicycle? You don't even have both hands on the wheel! FGASAFASDA.
...
Some of you may be wondering how this story ends. It's a level 100 MEW. A level 100 BULLSHIT Mew. How do you think this ends? Of course he beats the crap out of everyone and saves the day in the most bullshit manner known to man. Is there anything redeeming about this story at the end?
Damn it, alright. You got me. That's damned amazing. Being able to defeat such a terrible thing like cancer's a pretty good feeling. So, to all of you listening to SMK's story, consider tuning in this year and help us defeat cancer once again, and obtain baller status for yourselves.
I watched this last year and it was amazing. I especially liked Breakdown's Link to the Past run and entertaining commentary. Looking forward to Tri-Hex's 100% Yoshi's Island run this year. Glad to see this event getting the awesome thread it deserves.
Yeah you guys can catch cosmo doing zelda OoT mst-j practice speedruns on twitch sometimes. And siglemic practices super mario 64 120-star, which is pretty spectacular as well. Can't wait for this year's AGDQ! Gotta see romscout and RaneofSotN do SotN race again... hell, I'm even oddly stoked for Carcinogen for some reason.
Some of the scheduled game times(which I assume means the planned time to do the run in) seem downright absurd, I must watch to see if they succeed(and then be incredibly impressed at the way they do it).
Last year was super sweet, had fun watching Metroid Prime run. This year Im looking forward to the 70 star Super Mario 64 attempt, as Siglemic has stated he's going after it next now that he has the 120 star record Edit: Also, 3:05:00 for Cosmo to run through OoT? He's had two great runs in the past week sub 2:40:00, so I hope he gets to show one of those
SDA is one of the most concentrated spots of awesome on the internet, and we get to glimpse in for a few days. It's mind boggling how far they've bent over some of these games.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (I think) is one that stood out to me last year. Likely partly because the Castlevania before it in the Marathon wasn't quite as visually impressive (believe the line was "Awesome Games Done Quick, brought to you by Raaaaagggghhhhhh"). He was learning how to break magical seals 10 minutes after he'd already broken them. Granted many runs aren't much nicer to their respective games. I think Majora's Mask lasts about 10 minutes before it's stripped of all integrity and is left whimpering in a corner, wondering where continuity went. Ocarina lasts about 5 before the thread starts to unravel.
And then there's some games that aren't so much about breaking the game, as it is just jaw dropping execution (granted that's every speed run, but w/e). Come, together we shall have our fond, childhood memories ravaged and destroyed. For ESPORTS!
Damn, I've been waiting for this for a few months now. I've watched SDA's marathon since the very first one. I'll definitely tune in to this one. A lot of great games this year. Good luck to everyone involved. ^^
The pokemonyellow run that tribute posted on page1 was the reason I got into speedrunning in the first place.
Just some advice, if there is any one thing you should watch, it is trihex's yoshi's island run. The guy loves to show off how fucking good he is and definitely makes it entertaining.
Some things I personally am waiting for: cosmo's ocarina of time mst cygpher's smrpg and megaman2 tiki's megaman x

All the time estimates have a lot of leeway put in to make up for setup time and just incase everything goes horribly. The actual run time will be lower.
I'll be donating to name Tifa ESPORTS, what time exactly is FFVII being streamed? Use the automatic time formating so I don't have to convert please! :}
This is probably one of the few events I get really excited for.
6 PM EST tonight (in 3 hours of this post) watch Tri-hex (who posted on TL a few times) run Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island! It's amazing if you've yet to see it!
Edit: And Flicky is running too? Oh man, this means we get to hear his sweet resonating voice of gods! * Drools *
I loooove these events! I remember watching Tri-hex go for the Yoshi's Island 100% speed run world record all night once, and it was very entertaining. Will be tuning into this alllll weekend! <3
Come on guys, if you don't donate we'll end up with someone like Aeris named ESPORTS. And then you'll have to live with having allowed that emo mama's boy Sephiroth to kill ESPORTS. Don't be that guy.
I'm glad all their runs are getting uploaded after, as I can't stay awake long enough to watch everything I want to.
This is so awesome! I remember last time, and also I've been watchin Sig stream SM64 practicing to get back his 70star WR. Though, will they do Demon's souls / Dark souls?

Demon's souls is scheduled Friday at 3:05 EST, though obviously live events can be up or down on timing.

Oh is it Aweful games done quick till friday?
Should be a full run on demon's souls, as far as I know, though I'm not familiar with the game. The Aweful games segment is on Friday earlier in the day: Lagoon, Lawnmower man, Bubsy 3d, Trio the Punch, Bad Street Brawler, Deadly Towers...aweful indeed.
Edit: by full run, typically mean any% as opposed to 100%, if such designation exists...unless the schedule notes otherwise...<more disclaimers>
I'll just leave this here.... one of my fav videos for reasons I can't quite explain, and I love speedruns in general
Half life was the first 'proper' (as I would now call it) game that I played and indoctrinated me into my life of gaming, so to see someone so damn skilled at it and devote so much time to an ultimately fruitless game just felt special to me

Hi, trihex here! First, I wanna say I'm so sorry about neglecting to bump the TL thread about my stream lately. I'm a serial forgetter and just totally forgot to bump my other-forum-specific threads after moving out in December.
I love you guys, Team Liquid, Flicky, Lee (tribute), and Carl Sagan very very VERY much. <3

Can't wait for Super Mario 64, Zelda OoT, and Super Meat Boy.
It would be awesome if Cosmo could beat the world record he set for OoT several months ago.
Last marathon I saw Cosmo in (think it was the Japan relief one) he played it safe and got a bottle (I think) so he may take a slightly different route than he would for a record attempt. Not sure how much the route has changed since I last saw a current run, though. One video I saw he picked up heart containers after each boss... I'm guessing it was a variation on the bottle safety net but I'm not sure why he did it in that particular run.

His current route picks up all the hearts except fire temple so he can skip the goron tunic (does fire temple boss under the heat timer). He also has re-set his world record a couple of times in the last month, down to 2:31:45 in a couple of steps, from 2:34:19 that he got during his marathon.
Pretty crazy to watch some of the tricks he pulls off throughout.
too bad theres no donkey 1, 2, 3. those are great games to do speed runs of and really fun to watch imo. even so, i'll be tuning in, so many nostalgic games in there.

The girl who normally runs those games couldn't make it this year. Her attendance would have also potentially caused a bidding war between FF7 and FFX, which would have probably been amazing.
6 people already donated for ESPORTS! We need quite more to deal with Poxnor
Currently at work, so I can't watch... on the other hand not much interesting to see ... on the third hand it is always fun to see games I don't even know!
@donkey: Well, Essentia isn't the only one that could do the Donkey runs... but I miss her more for the RPG than these platformers
I've been into speedrunning for some years now, and I always really enjoy watching these guys' charity streams. It's a bit unfortunate that most of the older games get run so fast, while most of the games I don't care about (re: JRPGs) last for sooo long.
But yeah, speeddemos is awesome, and so is everyone running!

I was on the stream, when he donated. And if I remember correctly, he said (comment) something about getting outbid last year so he bid 2k to do the trick ... Don't know if I'm wrong, but well, maybe we can stop him again Maybe if we will get close he will add another buck or 1k or so, but at least we helped preventing cancer!

Saw it done once, if memory serves me right, it involves teleporting just after a trainer saw you and was about to walk up to you. Then it involved fighting another trainer (or was this the step before?) and growling 6 times at a specific pokemon he had... this determined what pokemon would appear in the wild, and if it would be level 3 or level 100...
The best time of the year. So sad I had to leave midway through Yoshi's Island yesterday cause I had to get some sleep Oh well, at least there are plenty more good things to come :D

Holy shit. In the Megaman X race they split their route for like five levels... and at the end of their split (boss of their respective stages before their routes met back up) they killed their boss at the exact same moment.
And then Tiki fucked up and was way behind for the rest of the run.

Yeah its a shame tbh, even if we dont get ESPORTS in the name we could at least help a cancer charity. Good competition is good.
I donated $15 yesterday because its all i can afford, good luck to SDA and to us! :D
Watched it the first time they did it a few years ago. Know SDA for "some time", too. Was doing a speedrun for them, didn't finish though, officially.
When are they doing FF7 marathon? I have to see it... my childhood.
EDIT: Found the schedule.
P.S. I have nothing to do this weekend, this marathon and the games in it are mostly really enjoyable to watch. Feels like a gift. Hope everything goes smooth.

Simply donate through the chipin, and after making your donation it asks if you'd like to leave a comment in the chipin to Speed Demos Archive. Write whatever you want in your comment there, "i.e. put my X dollars towards naming Tifa ESPORTS."
Final Fantasy Vii Part 1 Tifa Name poxnor $2,000.00 (1) Final Fantasy Vii Part 1 Tifa Name esports (all caps) $310.00 (13) Final Fantasy Vii Part 1 Tifa Name slappy $25.00 (1) Final Fantasy Vii Part 1 Tifa Name denied $10.00 (1)
The run is in 24 hours are you guys really giving up? ._. poxnor does this every year he drops a ton of money on something it's nothing against TL if naything he was issuing us a challenge.

I'm not giving up! We have to make a little more advertisement for this! Sadly "all" here are watching HSC IV
It seems like every time I turn this on it blows my mind. Especially some of that Mega Man action last night, that shit was impressive. I say pux practicing for the FFVII run, it was pretty great. He was about half way through the game in about the time I remember getting out of Midgar. Great stuff SDA!

Half life was slower because he wasnt using scripts there are some extra skips you can do if he uses scripts but SDA feels that takes a lot away from the runs and doesn't allow it.

the genre he is running is just very boring to watch. Also its very hard to tell if he is really that skilled. If you watch trihex playing yoshi island you know he is the best player in the world by far most likely. Everything he does is so refined and he can shows that off very well. So many little perfect Jumps and tricks and remembering everything in a 3h run is just insane.
It might just be me but i prefer watching games that require a shitload of skill rather than games that are very easy to win in the first place thats why i am very excited about super meat boy, devil may cry and i also watched kid chameleon(hardest fucking game on the planet most likely), some sonic games and megaman stuff.
But yeah Halo reach is more like oh look a dude plays halo - and after 5 minutes it just gets boring.

Agreed. Reach is a pretty shitty game.
You should check out Cody's Halo 2 no-death legendary speedrun. It's seriously impressive if you've ever played Halo 2 before.
You can also check out Halo 1 and Halo 2 "done segmented." The H2 one comes with commentary. There are a lot of sequence breaks and cool tricks that are tough to pull off and clearly take skill. Later Halo games severely hindered speedrunner's abilities to glitch and do tricks, so they're far more boring.
Cody's really good, but Reach doesn't have a lot of amazing tricks like previous games, so it's not as fun to watch. He's also an old BW fan like a lot of the High Speed Halo old guard. As HawaiianPig said, the Halo 2 segmented run is amazing, check it out after the marathon some time.
i personally don't really like segmented speedruns in my opinion TAS and segementing destroys the whole purpose of speedrunning a game. For me the reason to speedrun games is to show off your skill in a game that you really love and put in thousands of hours to get good at.

The problem is some games really arent possible in Single Segment and have some really cool tricks it really depends on your personal opinions though like Cara is working on an insane segmented FFX run with extreme luck manipulation that could easily take him well over a year.
The final product will be extremely impressive, and Single segment and segmented are listed in different categories anyways so they're judged differently. I dont mind segmented as long as there is really good planning and they make really good use of the segments.
Also many (dare I say the vast majority) of the game-breaking glitches people use in speed runs were discovered by TASers. Although I too prefer to watch non-tool-assisted runs as well, TASing is really about exploring all possibilities and in many senses understanding how games work on a fundamental level (zips, physics glitches, luck manipulation) which is intellectually fascinating.
I missed the ending of the reach run for dinner what happened?
Edit: Microsoft donated 5 reach bundles to be given out as a donation raffle thats probably why they had it on the schedule. He didn't seem very pro with it even with it not being as runable as the previous halo's. I think it would have been really cool if they did 1 or 2.
That super meat boy run was insane. I've only really tried playing while high but still, that was incredibly impressive.
Edit: My friends and I would take turns on each levels and did end up beating the game after a few weeks and then we went back to try and get every bandage but got bored. For those who have never played it, SMB is amazing fun.

This thing has been basically amazing to watch. Mad mad mad mad mad mad props and I have donated! A few questions that are probably already answered, but I'm still curious:
1. Is this a non stop or do they break to sleep? 2. Have they already done the FF7 one? 3. How did they manage to get so many amazing speed racers together? 4. Where are vods of the entire event to be found?

1. The marathon and stream is 24 hours until the end of Monday 2. No, you can view their run schedule here 3. They run a site dedicated to doing this 4. For now, on their Twitch.tv page. Later on they will have higher quality uploads available on their site.

kinda disappointed by the dmc run, i was kinda expecting a perfect run without the runner taking any damage and all. I know that the game is very hard because i owned it myself but i could beat the first few bosses without taking any damage...

This is like, the most entertaining I've seen the stream from a talking perspective. Been watching for two days now, Flicky's just got a good charisma to himself, like a stand-up comedian.

Clearly you are taking his sarcasm a bit too seriously. Person you are quoting for support was also most probably being sarcastic as well. It's all in good fun and for a good cause.
Haha, definitely worth losing my sleep. Though im feeling I may not play so well in the nasl team qualifiers tomorrow! Oh well awesome cause, tons of entertainment.

Glad to see so many people understood that I wasn't being very serious.
Also, the run itself was pretty decent. Wondering if anyone noticed.
You did a run?
:D. I think your hilariously sarcastic attitude won a lot of people over, ESPORTS has a nice lead now. Great job with everything, and thanks for the kind words about Soulkey
I don't remember if it was poxnor or not, but I remember during the Japan Relief marathon when they were having the contest to name the OoT filename someone came in during the last five or so minutes because someone had outbid his name and dropped another chunk of change.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on, but I'm proud of TL for blasting past that 2k mark.
I was exhausted and passed out shortly after andrewg's runs. Going back to watch DMC and Bayonetta for sure, especially after those pictures. Piano + Castlevania = amazing.
Castlevania has one of the best soundtrack for a classical game, damn that was amazing. And the guy doing the run was impressive as well, doing neat tricks like it was nothing.
Flicky, I thought you were a just another casual starcraft fan, with a predilection for the cool stuff like the oz jacket and the firebathero dance. Harmless enough, although I wasn't sure about your being the face and figure (and Justin Bieber mop top) representing all starcraft fans at SDA.
But now I realize I was completely wrong. You are a shameless, irrepressible, Immutable, Immortal, Infinite, Eternal personification of concentrated bear testicles. You've ascended beyond the bandwagon, and now the masses yearn to follow off your every move. You are now an esports Kardashian.
Wasn't Dawn of Sorrow (the one I remembered - difficult to stream as it's a DS game), but watching Dragondarch crush Aria of Sorrow was quite entertaining. I think he said he set a new personal record for his Julius run, too.

Send in another donation (could be 1 dollar) and say your previous donation was meant to go for that. Alternatively, message one of the moderators or people at the marathon on the IRC chat. Let me know if you are unsure how to do this.
They update the tracker before they announce it on the stream, and the donation announcements tend to get behind it still shows 2587 that was the same donation.

That guy has to be Poxnor's friend or him incognito it's the same person who gave him $500 before so he's now thrown $1000 to the poxnor name I think Mango's throwing the auction money soon but I don't know how much it is...

Half the people there/in the stream don't like esports because it went up against poxnor. They'd probably like esports getting killed. Their loss, but whatever.
And Sheath is a much better name for Aeris because, as someone that donated towards it mentioned, that's all she's good for.
At this point, I'd steal Cid. Currently it's a war between MLP fans and people calling him 'notapony'
Cloud got named Arthur. Was actually a pretty touching story that went with the donation for that name.
Cid really only appears during the rocket sequence then disappears for the rest of the run, Aeris as esports is the gift that keeps on giving because they talk about her for the rest of the game.
Actually, scratch Cid. The first post says Cait Sith is the third 'main' party member.
So if poxnor outbids on Tifa, I'd go for that. I can't remember how soon you run into Cait Sith, though I think it's golden saucer which is a few hours out.
Aww, too bad Poxnor/Poxnor lovers is/are loaded, lol. Maybe we should have gone for naming almost every character ESPORTS, rather than just the best one. ^^
And I'm assuming that 1001 was from the chainmail, thanks to mango for doing that, was pretty awesome. And ofc thanks to Flicky for everything.
The temptation to frame this as a victory or a loss would significantly devalue the significance of what we have all just accomplished.
118 individuals from both within and without our community donated a total of $3,806.24 in order to name Tifa ESPORTS. On average, each individual donated $32.26 to the cause. In addition, our efforts led the total amount donated towards naming Tifa in general to come close to reaching ten thousand dollars.

A special thanks to all the Fighting Game community monsters should be given as well. There were a ton of donations from people in the FGC towards naming Tifa ESPORTS, making us unlikely allies.

I was really digging the metroid ones.
Can see it being boring, a lot of RPGs don't make for good speedruns to watch, because they're largely about making an excellent plan and sticking to it. Some of them are down to step-by-step directions for navigation and very specific actions.
Doesn't necessarily make it more appealing to ya, since there are very few 'skill' moments as far as hitting small timing windows you see in action/adventure style games, but it depends on your tastes.

Basically this. FFVII is only really that fun to watch if you've played it a few million times. Then, the nostalgia value is off the charts.
I have a feeling this 'donate for best FF game' may blow up over the next 50 hours, talk about a heated subject for people to throw a few dollars at at a time.

Ya, this is what I'm getting at. I've beaten FFVII many times and I love the game. But a speed run is just not even close to entertaning, imo.
The next run, which I believe is Ocarina of time, even though it is an RPG can make for a great speedrun as well. But FFVII is one of those games where there is literally hours of dialogue. >.<

The ocarina of time speedrun involves so many tricks and glitches it is probably one of THE best speedruns to watch .
Ya, FF7 might be fun to watch if you played it, but even then, it won't be very impressive. Too much randomness, and not visually impressive like other actiony games like SMB/mario games can be.

I'd classify OoT as more of an action/adventure game, though it does have its RPG elements, but I see where you're coming from. A lot of watching gaming (speedrun or otherwise) comes down to preference.
OoT will be after the first disc of FF7 and DKC2, that got donated into the marathon in place of downtime for the setup hour they had built in to help with overruns. So far they've been far enough under schedule to add a few games in.

Ya pretty much the most 'impressive' part of the JRPG speed runs is knowing how little fighting you can get away with while still being strong enough for the harder boss fights(which goes into your part about planning). It ends up being like some kind of low level challenge on steroids.

Since they're good on time, the 1 hour setup time they had will be replaced with DKC2 if I'm not mistaken, and after that there will be OoT... wich will be 5 in the morning here -_-
Time to set the alarm clock, quite some good games coming up after that also!
im too lazy to google/search, but what was the scenario for don to pick a different character? all items he picks cloud, one item less he picks tifa (or aeris) minimum items he picks the other? lol just curious

On that note, could you share the link to the tracker for ESPORTS ?
Hmm, I donated 15 to name Cait Sith ESPORTS but don't see it on the tracker, heard my name on stream but guess my comment didn't go through, am I doing something wrong when I'm adding the comment on the pay screen? Edit : Doesn't look like my 15 yesterday to name Tifa is there either, but I've definitely paid for it. 2nd Edit : I'll PM it to you Flicky. Sorted out, thanks!

Are you sure you were using the ChipIn comments and not PayPal Donator comments? You need to use the ChipIn comments in order for them to count.
The good news is, you can donate again and get all of your donations moved to Cait Sith for ESPORTS.
Alright, bump. We're at 128 and we need 200, I can't donate that amount myself T_T Anyone still here? Get off TakeTV We prob need like 4 people x 20 dollars at least.
Worth repeating: the comment option pops up AFTER you pay to paypal. Keep that window open! EDIT: $158.00 ! So 4 ppl x11$ :O

Oh, ok. Weird, I thought the site automatically updates everything directly from chipin. They're way behind on reading the comments on stream but it's not related at all.
When does it update? We should be way ahead by now with all the new donations in and we're still listed in 2nd and the dumb cat is right around the corner...
You guys are sure that you added Cait Sith should be named ESPORTs in your CHIPIN comment? _Paypal comment does not count_ The chipin one appears after the paypal one. If you're having problems join #sdamarathon on quakenet, the mods can help you. Donating another amount also adds your previous donation to it.

Perhaps because ESPORTS (tech skill aside) is about controlling a body, such as a video game character(s), that's not your own... much like Cait Sith is a puppet controlled by another puppet controlled from a remote location. Reeve essentially plays the ultimate video game.
Can you imagine what Reeve's personality/dialogue would be like if he had to control Cait Sith while it had Dragoon AI?
Just been popping in there every once inawhile (might stay now to see the FF7 run though). They have raised a shitload of money already, almost 75k as of now, and they still have 2 more days left. This is by far the most money I have seen raised from a video game marathon. The only one that I have seen come close was STGs Final Fantasy marathon where they hit a little over 50k.

That's a really conservative estimate, if he doesn't have major mistakes he'll beat it by 30ish minutes...Even with semi-major mistakes, he should easily come in 20+ under.
The best part is that every time I've seen Cosmo run the game in front of a large audience, he's always so willing to patiently explain each trick as he's doing it and why he's doing it. It just makes the run that much more enjoyable for people that aren't as familiar with all the little tricks throughout.

It says MST+all dungeons, though I don't know what MST means, I'm assuming it will be longer than normal.
But I've gotta say this is by far the most entertaining speedrun I've seen thus far.
Yeah, I've been watching him practice for this marathon on his stream. The way they make this game look so easy is pretty amazing. This game was so hard when we first played it oh so long ago.

MST means Medallions Stones Trials. It is all 8 of the main dungeons, Ganon's trials, and then beat the game.
I love how they do these runs so casually and explain it as they go. Makes it so much fun to watch. Can't wait to watch the SM64 run, but I really wish that Siglemic would be doing the run. He's my favorite SM64 speedrunner.
Yea, it's quite funny that all the hate people have for the water temple yet in this run it'll come down to one hover and the boss :D OoT is probably one of the more entertaining games to watch.. together with Super Mario 64. OoT has a lot of glitches, SMB64 goes fast. Gogo Cosmo! Break this silly game! For people who doesn't know, Cosmo has the WR in this category.
For those wondering why it's specifically called a MST run and not just an OoT run, it's because the fastest way to beat OoT skips a lot of dungeons. If I recall correctly, you actually only need the Shadow and Light Medallions (Light you get after finishing all the other adult dungeons, normally) to make the bridge appear to get into Ganondorf's castle. There's some funky hex code manipulation possible that somehow turns a bottle into a medallion. That run takes (I think) just over an hour. Also worth a watch.
As with many games, sometimes the fastest way is either not as interesting or skips some fun parts of the games. That's why a lot of games have an any% (fastest possible) and 100% category (or all bosses, etc.) so that there's still a reason to speedrun a larger portion of the game while still going as fast as possible. Thus, we get to witness the amazing MST run.
The best part is that he explains so well WHILE DOING IT so even noobs who know pretty much nothing about the game and the speedrunning aspect of it more particularly can understand what's going on. :D
Random sidenote, all the comments about Super Monkey Ball. Cosmo also runs that, toward the end of the marathon and he used to hold the world record for single-segment expert in that game (and still may, haven't really kept up). It's also impressive from a ridiculously hard game to play standpoint.

What was the spirit hover you guys are talking about? Is that the glitch he used to get the mirror shield?
Yeah, it's even more difficult than it looked, since, among other things, he only had 2 bombchus, and you have to do a frame-perfect trick to be able to turn around...in addition to guays, and getting enough height...and sticking to the seams...it's insane.

More difficult than it looked? Well it looked pretty damn difficult to start with
Lol this was the best thing since ... yesterday's Super Meat Boy run. :D Great stuff. Going to bed now, 7am here and I didn't stop watching since the beginning of Zelda race lol
Damn I don't normally watch speedruns but I just started watching this stream and it is really cool. Wish I would have tuned in earlier now.
One thing though, imagine how much better the stream would be if some of the awesome personalities in the SC community were there, just to provide laughs and extra entertainment.

If you get the chance, go back into the twitch vods and watch Flicky's run of Bayonetta...the personalities made that block amazingly entertaining, and, during the process, TL-types donated something like 2k in a 3 hour block. Altogether good stuff.
Or watch any of the runs that PJ did. They were all pretty funny as well.
At this point in the marathon, just about everyone's exhausted, so a bit less active.
Edit: Also, to the above. Having to follow a 2.5 hour run with less than 5 minutes of mistakes, most of which were very difficult to detect is a very difficult task. I don't envy Runnerguy having to follow after Cosmo after the beastly run he put on.

SMRPG now, one of the best RPGs out there. Dunno what a speed run of this game looks like even though I've had the game since the day it came out so this should be interesting...
I know he's probably gonna be like my brother and use only his starter through the whole game (maybe catching a legendary at some point) but it's going to be fun to watch.
As much as I hate a lot of the pokemon 'stuff' (for lack of a better term), the original games were actually decent RPGs, and this route has been changed a ton, even over the last couple of months, so this should be interesting.
Random sidenote as usual: the runner's brother, werster, holds the sda record for blue, and has gotten several time close to 2 hours flat in live races on srl.

I don't like the anime anymore, I loved it when I was younger but it got worse as time went by. Anyway, the two first generations of the games were fucking awesome. I played gold so much. 3rd generation was good too, but at that time most of the people who I used to play with had moved on.

You can always watch the VODs later on their TwitchTV page, or later on from their site directly. That Link to the Past run was really good; plus points for being my favorite Zelda game.
Ok, just turned it on. I have never once turned on one of these events and NOT had it be Super Mario 64. I love the game don't get me wrong, but wow my luck is terrible. So tired of seeing it. And now it's another Mario game next lol...
I used to be pretty crazy into speedruns (I had watched all of their videos @SDA + all the videos @TAS as well as participated in the forums) but the last few years have been kind of dull in that regard; guess I grew out of it.
I enjoy let's plays more now (good ones anyway)... I think the appeal of watching a game be played was the bigger selling point for me but now that I can watch them normally I've stopped watching speedruns (except old school FPS games... always good stuff).

This guy's estimate is over 20 min longer than the record though, so I hope he still does ok.
All estimates should include quite a bit of extra time to account for potential screwups and hickups during setup time etc. so they don't mess up the schedule.
Cosmo who has been running OoT daily the entire december month, and almost always landing around 2:35 (I think twice over 2:40) estimated his time to take 3:05.
If they're running ahead of schedule they put in donation challenges for extra games, and that's why DKC2 and Demon's Souls was added.
On January 09 2012 18:40 Endymion wrote: anyone catch the demon souls run? how was it?
Standard Magician crescent falchion into homing soul arrow run. Not particularly quick either: he was either messing up or using old versions of the latest speedrun tricks.
And the stream is up for me, even though chat is full of people saying it isn't. Maybe if I refresh it'll die.
EDIT: Alternatively, wait five minute and it will die.

Most of the stuff is amazing..!
I missed it myself, but they say Trihex did awesome on his Yoshis Island run. What I saw of Donkey Kong Country 2 was really good, to quote the guy at the computer "I was about to read some donations, but I'm just mezmorised by the run" Contra 3, 2 guys 1 controller, not flawless, but had some very epic moments. They were more synced than figure skaters. Half-Life, also not perfect, but so impressive nailing trick after trick non-stop 50 minutes or what it was. (Also helped that he explained almost every trick he did).
Also, keep in mind that they will continune with bonus stream after the marathon with some of the games that have been requested, tho there will be no additional drawings.
I am surprised not to see any post about it, but does anyone know how we can watch the previous speedruns ? Twitch.tv automatic VODs are up pretty fast usually, so I am surprised to find none.

Because they are recording externally and the huge size of it all.
They said to allow 3-4 weeks after the event for VOD's.

Damn, 3 weeks till I can see Magicka's run. Out of curiosity, how did they do it, mine all day long to do the whole map in 5secs? I mean, in a Magicka speedrun with 4 players, longtest thing would be moving...

Unforunately the Magicka run was plagued by issues. It ended up not being completed due to repeated crashed and desynchs. What there was of it was kind of fun, and the conversations were entertaining, but it seemed to be particularly unstable at the time =(
Edit

Most of the runs are up on the twitch vod section, it just seems to be taking awhile for some of them to be accessible, so it may be worth checking back on from time to time if it's a run in the last few hours:

Can't track it specifically, but naming Tifa and Cait Sith were $4090.29, including just over 1k from the chain mail auction. While that may not all be TL users, I know there were quite a few others that I heard throughout that weren't for either of those but included TL in their comment.
I know TL was thanked a few times for sending a ton of traffic their way, so it was certainly a substantial amount.

In addition, I clearly heard donation comments from both Day[9] and Rotterdam this weekend.

I could never get past the colossus that had like 4 legs i think, and u had to run through tunnels under it to defeat it. But it was still a really unique experience for a game i couldn't explain.

He is one of the most boring colossus IMO(None that any of them are boring). My favorite fight is the fifth one(The first flying one), but my favorite colossus(The one I find the coolest) is the ninth one(The one with the geysers). Also, everyone should play ICO. SOTC is like the spiritual successor of ICO, which is another awesome game.
And then there's The last guardian, which will hopefully come out this year and it's probably going to be awesome.(Same director)
FF7 isn't very interesting in terms of speedruns, but I guess I understand it being the last game since it's a universally recognized and liked/loved game.
I find speed runs of RPGs quite interesting, when you see bosses that gave you such a hard time kicked in the ass with a team of half the level you tried it

Congrats to everyone that donated, and everyone that helped make it what it was. Sick event, was thoroughly entertained by the runs (Ocarina of Time was something else).
The difference in donations compared to last year is really impressive.
Next year they should get in touch with Day9 and see if he could get one his daily's involved. (Day9 speed clears xxx or even a few SC2 campaign levels).

they spotlighted it a long time ago. thats how i found out about it.

they have a site thats linked on the first page. you can see their community there. In a few weeks they are going to release a dvd quality version of all the footage.

This thread was moved from Sports and Games section to General, and was ultimately Spotlighted on the front page of Team Liquid. In addition, Team Liquid had both a physical presence at the event, and a spiritual one through our online interaction with and donations to the marathon.
I was glued to my monitor all marathon long watching these guys. Huge props to them for such a successful event. I think some days I didn't even visit TL.net because of watching so intently.
This event was obviously the most successful one to date but I also think it was the highest quality. Even though I saw most of the runs live I can't wait for the feature length highlight and blooper reels to come around.
Not many huge corporations can claim to have helped in over a quarter million total in donations (all marathons cumulative) to cancer research, much less just few sick talented people in one room.

Aside from spotlighting, move to general, donations for Cait Sith as ESPORTS, and others...I did make a thread for this back in December. Which luckily got replaced with this super high quality OP. Anyone can help with stuff like this. You just have to look.
Final tracker, still a week of bonus streaming from people who will still be in DC before flights which might push that up to 150k but still freaking amazing.
Just so people know, there will be a Summer Games Done Quick most likely, and they are looking into a possible European Marathon as well so keep your eyes open we'll keep you posted when another marathon pops up.

I'm as excited for these events as I am for any major starcraft 2 tournament (This is my first event). Hopefully there'll be a SC2 or SC1 campaign speedrun in the summer!
Actually a bit bummed that it's over, still can't get over how awesome this marathon was, can't believe I missed out on last years. Here's to hoping for a Summer and/or European event.

Thew usual Twitch.tv VoDs are up on their twitch page but they also recorded every minute of the event in high quality and are going to release the high quality VoDs on their site in the next few weeks.

God damnit. I have to be up early on set tomorrow! GR
Now they are probably going to do the fastest and most unscary Amnesia: The Dark Descent run on the bonus stream. They are being trolled by Mac OS X HDCP requirements right now though.

I'm looking for a vod of the Lagoon speedrun since I heard it was hilarious but I missed it. However, the multi-hour-long vods on justintv are out of order and I just couldn't find the Lagoon segment. Second, I periodically check back at the AGDQ runs schedule, but only a few of the games have blue links, and Lagoon is not one of them.
Hey guys! I'm giving this thread a bump because the Speed Demos Archive is doing Summer Games Done Quickly right now! Thy are currently going through the first part of FFVIII, but they are doing 70 games total.
The stream link from the original OP works still, but the link is twitchtv
I'm pretty sure this is the same guy who did the FF7 walkthrough where we narrowly lost the name Tifa being Esports. Perhaps we can have better luck this time around?
From personal experience watching the first Speed Games Marathon, it is a lot of fun to watch and covers a lot of games. Many of the games I played and I still can't beat and and they show up and do it in like 5 minutes. I highly recommend it.
This is great! Does anyone know if there's a way to play Typing of the Dead on PC? I found some potentially shady download sites but that doesn't look too appealing. It's running $60 on ebay! Is it considered free or abanonware at this point?
