Sorry to re-open an old topic, but what Shmay is talking about is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which is in the vast majority of toothpastes. There is pretty convincing evidence that SLS is related to canker sore development, and using a non-SLS toothpaste can help a lot (though they may be hard to find). Anecdotally, I haven't had any canker sores in about 6 months, since I switched toothpaste. Also, canker sores are not the same as cold sores, and are not related to the herpes virus (generally speaking). Anyway, I would definitely recommend looking into getting a different toothpaste if you have problems. There is a reasonable amount of information on such things -- search for '"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate" Aphthous Ulcer' on google...
