Juggalo or Juggalette (the latter being feminine) is a name given to fans of Insane Clown Posse or any other Psychopathic Records hip hop group. Juggalos have developed their own idioms, slang, and characteristics.
Not being an American myself it is the first time I have been exposed to this sort of thing. My first thought is these people are massive bogans and I generally despise people who celebrate the fact they are stupid. I then got thinking it is probably not right just to judge these people because they are so different to me and what I value. To this point I am still not sure what I think about it there are plenty of people I would classify a waste of space that do the same thing (get plastered, act like idiots all the time every weekend), at least these people seem to thrive on good vibes and letting go.
Anyway since most people on TL seem to be the other end of the spectrum to these people I thought it would be interesting to hear their thoughts.
And no, it is completely ok for you to judge them for celebrating stupidity. If you cant judge people for being willingly *insert negative characteristic*, when would anyone be allowed to judge anything?

Exactly. There are a couple of things in the world which are objectively bad for the human race and life in general. Stupidity is beyond the shadow of a doubt one of them.
It's no more anti-intellectual than any modern religion, I don't see why this is bad. Yes I went there, but it's the cold hard truth no matter how much it stings. I'm sure many people have had their runs with ICP, even I used to listen to some of their music and enjoy a song here and there for the fun aspect of it, I really don't see why we should care about what they do at their concerts and gatherings though.

3 posts to get religion involved. Must be a record.
And yes if they are willingly stupid then judge away. Stupidity is bad and seeing it as a good thing is even worse.
I think that the anti-intellectualism associated with that band is probably no more than any other similar group However, on the broader point of 'anti-intellectualism', it is a worrying sign in the US where in no less than a year we have seen the shutting down of the Tevatron and the shutting down of Nasa's space shuttle program.
As a Chinese guy looking at this, I think this is pretty stupid and such nonsense is why America has such a bad rep of being a cesspool of stupidity amongst some of my friends.
I love how a niche site like TL which generally contains a subculture which is ostracised by a large portion of regular society is able to perform the exact same feat on other societies too
I don't really know if the movie itself celebrates stupidity, however I do have a huge issues with seeing juggalos in their natural habitat, so to speak.. But if they live wholesome lives outside of the "gathering", I'm ok with it. Festivals are without a doubt made for people to live out their decadent dreams for about a week, and then return to society with a sense of relief over the fact that you dared to do stuff that you'd only ever dreamed of.

First, this happens all the time. You see minorities being racist towards other minorities in the USA all the time. Yes of course that doesnt make it necessarily "ok", but it shouldnt come as a surprise.
Second, are you a juggalo? Because if juggalos are celebrating anti-intellectualism, then that group is worthy of our disdain and I cant see why anyone would defend them unless they were a part of that group. Its like trying to be understanding of a culture that practices female genital mutilation.

Except the people who make up the TL "subculture" are generally more intelligent than the large portion of society. Where as the current society this thread is about is about being anti-intelligent.

Surely you jest?
The TL population is hardly more intelligent then any other group. Nothing suggests this and no actuall evidence of any kind exists to suggest that this is the case.
But us being such an intelligent bunch, we allready knew that ofcourse.

Whilst I don't like the idea of people celebrating the fact they are dumb, people have the right to live however they like and really if they are doing no harm to others/ earn a living and serve a function in society really they can act as stupid as they like. It seems though that most people in this video would be drop kicks though (hard to say though if you watch all the interviews). Comparing it to female genital mutilation is an odd parallel that I don't think fits to well.

I think the op needs to get out more. The culture of getting smashed, getting high, doing stupid shit, saying stupid shit and not giving a fuck about it isn't exactly something that is subculture.
If you got loaded up on ecstasy, weed and vodka you'd probably be saying the same stupid shit.

I'm sure that's what every subculture thinks of itself. TL isn't more intelligent than the average society, it's just easier to find more intelligent people within the community because of the fact that it's a large population on the internet that promotes intelligence at its forefront, and therefore is able to filter through many people extremely rapidly until it brings out the intelligent ones.

Oh and to say 'woot woot'... Can't forget that. I want the 20minutes back.
I haven't watched the video but this group of people is just like any other kind of subculture ever created. People want to feel accepted, and want to feel like they are a part of something. And that just happens to be where they are accepted, whether it's because their personalities match the ideals of the group, or they just happened to be exposed to it in a part of their lives where they needed what the group provided. The things they do within that subculture is just an aftereffect of what is accepted within the group as good or bad, and anyone joining the group is going to feel the need to emulate what is already being done. If people just wanted an excuse to eat/drink/do drugs/do stupid stuff they would just do it on their own or with some friends. Those things just happen to be what is accepted in that subculture as the norm.

Oh man, I still remember this "magnet-controversy". The Saturday Nigh Live parody was funny as hell. But the sad part is that almost nobody knows how magnets work. As a physicist I can attest that magnetism is quite complicated actually. So, maybe people shouldn't be so quick to judge.

I don't think it was them questioning how magnets work that caused controversy, it was their follow up "and I don't want to talk to a scientist, you all fuckers lying, and getting me pissed". Such a proud display of willful ignorance in the face of possible explanation is the only controversial part.
So uhm, where in the video are they celebrating anti - intellectuism?
Don't get me wrong, they don't strike me as very intelligent people but they are just having a week of fun. Let them be wild for a week, the next day they will all be back at work.
No need to bash an already often ridiculed (is this correct?) minority.
They seem pretty normal. Drugs, sex, food, music. Things that make you feel great without much effort or thought. I guess it's natural that some people adapt an anti-intellectual stance. Thinking can definitely be a downer.
"Intellectuals" go to festivals to fuck, drink and act stupid too though.
How was any of that anti-intellectual? Seemed like just a festival, perhaps more excessive than most but whatever. I didn't see any celebrating of stupidity either, as if I watched a complete different video from you guys. Or do you think partying in general is anti-intellectual and celebrating of stupidity?
Sorry but I don't see how this is any more stupid than diehard NFL fans, Justin Bieber fans, Christianity fans, political supporters, or anything else. When people get together, they lose all reason and only submit themselves to the surrounding culture. This is nothing special.
On October 02 2011 21:46 SpiffD wrote: What gas was that fat guy inhaling?
nitrous oxide, they come in small canisters that are inserted into the dispenser, they are used for carbonating drinks, and in hospitals it's used as a kind of anaesthetic (laughing gas), inhaling them is similar to huffing paint except not quite as unhealthy, all it does it cut off oxygen flow to the brain so you feel high, it's basically the cheapest dirtiest way to get a high.
I don't see at all how they are celebrating stupidity. They are celebrating friendship, family, drugs, partying, etc. In fact a lot of the people interviewed talked about how people judge them and people think they are stupid. They welcome everybody, even straight edge people with jobs. They aren't celebrating the fact that they are morons, they are just morons.
A better example of celebrating anti-intellectualism is gangsta rap. It's practically required to have a certain level of street cred to be a gangsta rapper. That means that somebody that commits crimes and has been to prison is seen favorably over someone that grew up in the suburbs with 2 stable parents. But I can't blame them - nobody wants to see a spoiled rich could talking about surviving the hood. Although I have heard that Lil Jon grew up in a mansion to upper class parents. He also seemed fairly intelligent on The Apprentice. That means his persona of yelling YEAH and OKAY and sounding like an idiot is all an act. Now THAT's celebrating anti-intellectualism.

So the documentary basically deals with people that are either high of their asses. Also is it just me or am i the only one bothered by them using the word "Fuck" as every second word?

Yea it was a little hyperbolic. I shouldnt have used an example that literally involves hurting other people. If they truly arent harming others then I dont really see a problem with "live and let live"

How is judging people useless? Unless you want to get all existential and goin on about how "we all die in the end" or "were all just specks in the universe" or whatever, I really think that judging people and characteristics is very useful when it comes to improving society and benefiting human kind.
Science and intellectualism has helped increase the quality and length of the average human life. ICPs lyrics "And I don’t wanna talk to a scientist. Y’all motherfuckers lying, and getting me pissed" goes directly against the very thing that has benefited us. I judge their willful ignorance to be detrimental to society. How is that wrong?

Yea, i don't feel like this is really a huge deal. It's been around forever in some form or another.
I feel like there are a lot of people out there who don't care about things enough to educate themselves, and they'll kind of band together as sort of an anti crowd to the well educated, but it's nothing new.
Like someone else said earlier, ICP was basically rap for rednecks.

TL is about gaming. Gaming subculture is NOT ostracised by the regular society. Unless you come from some third world country who can't afford basic facilities like the Internet and IT stuff.
well, there was actually a guy near the beginning who was quite articulate. And the guy going on about his liver said probably the most true thing that can be said about living life to the fullest.
The music is for white-trash, fat, redneck, and stupid people. Every single "juggalo" fits at least two of these. I'd love to know how many people at that 3 day concert were educated.
Take it from an american who grew up in school knowing some of these types. We hate them just as much as the rest of the world does.

Completely wrong. Any judgment is completely worthless and irrelevant if you haven't tried walking a mile in the shoes of whoever you are judging, or at least considered it. It is due to your way of thinking that there is hate and war in the world. Case in point: you obviously haven't even watched the video in the OP, yet you had time to look up some lyrics. Science and intellectualism hasn't increased the quality of your life, it looks like.

No no, see you got it wrong. The world hates people who make stupid generalisations.
Just a party like everywhere else. Am i the only one who noticed the pregnant girl talking proudly about her pregnancy while smoking and probably getting drunk? That pretty much sums up the juggalo definitaion for me >> simple lazy fucks who like to party and don't like social rules.
They don't seem that bad to be honest. People just having a good time and enjoying a festival. Sure, they might look trashy or weird to some people, but that's what a lot of subcultures based around music look like. They don't seem any dumber than anyone else. I doubt they actively promote ignorance.
It's easy to hate on other groups and even easier when they look different, but that's humanity for you. Everyone does it, myself included.

The logical progression of that is that you can't judge anyone for anything because it's their opinion. Even if it's their opinion that rape is good.
Subjectivism is silly. Being able to judge people is not.
Acually i kinda like them they remind me of woodstook and stuff... They all seem to be a kind crew living like a family since most others are too close minded to arrange with them. Its no other than hardcore punk or Metal at the beginning of its existance... I have to agree with that. Sure there are lots of smart guys on TL but the community in a whole isn't smart at all. Just look at this topic. A bunch of nerd criticizing how other people spend their free time. I've nothing against those jaggalos, They can do whatever they want because even if I would never imagine myself doing the same stuff, they aren't criticizing my life style. They seem to be tolerant people. Working in a bank is as stupid as getting wasted in a wood imo.
I have no problem with people being stupid or even celebrating stupidity, just they have no right to ever give an opinion on anything important after that, when they do, I do have a problem. (this also holds true for all of the right-wing people who think that going to a good college is "elitist"

there is a difference between smoking a little pot and being a juggalo.
I worked with a "juggalo" once. He played their albums everyday at work. The first few times I heard it I laughed, there are some funny jokes in the songs. But the novelty wore off fast. I finally had to tell my boss I was going to loose my mind if I had to hear that album one more time. I have only met a few people who called themselves juggalos and without a doubt they were all idiots.
I prefer rap that has a bit more thought put into it and actually speaks to me. + Show Spoiler +
Seriously, (comparatively extremely) intelligence is the trait that makes the distinction between humans and other animals. Celebrating a lack of intelligence is a celebration of being on the murky edge of the gene pool. Get out of here, and keep that celebratory attitude within your own community.

I am against abortion - but that doesn't mean I would take that right away from anybody else, still I don't agree with it. It is my opinion, and I judge people somehow in that regard, but live and let live.
I think what I am trying to ramble about: It's totally ok to have your own thoughts, pls, I encourage you, disagree and agree with what ever you like, but as long as it isn't harmful to you, it isn't forced on you and forced on nobody else, let people enjoy it who might find it helpful.

As a matter of fact there is even a difference between smoking a fucking metric shitton of pot and being a juggalo.
All these people defending Juggalo society clearly have never interacted with these people before, and I can 100% guarantee that after a single, minute long conversation with a clown-faced POS about Orange Faygo and how awesome PCP is ones opinion would change in a heartbeat. These are the lowest of the low, with pregnant juggalettes getting wasted and smoking cigs while their less pregnant but no less distended fellow women clowns are offering views of their titties for cents on the dollar. I have to agree with this guy, i found nothing that extraordinary in the film, that it couldn't have originated from basically any other subculture i know of.
Edit: obviously i have not heard anything else about these peaple other than what was shown in the film.

Well strictly judging from the video, they're definitely not the brainiest bunch, but at the same time, they aren't the worst people you could have around.
Just seems to me like that love to have fun at whatever the cost. I definitely wouldn't want such peeps in my backyard, but then again, I'd rather have these people than live in, say, the bronx (to put things in perspective for Americans).
Seems like the Juggalos from my country are really, really meek compared to these hardcore "ninjas". A really interesting sub-culture that should be studied.
What I got from this video is that every single one of them has a background story to their "maturation" into "Juggalo-ism". I am pretty certain that these folks have faced rejection, discrimination, etc in real life, and are just looking for a place where they are accepted and not judged.

from personal experience, the scum of society are the only people worth a damn. Most streetwalking hookers and crackhead junkies I've met are by far better people than say, most of the airheads at my prestigious university (by this country's standards), or the members of the sailing club I used to work at where membership cost $100,000 a year, who were actually the most disgusting people I've met in my life.
Or maybe you should look in the middle for the people worth a damn. Hookers and crackheads might be in some case better people than selfish rich pricks or pseudo-intellectual posers at universities, but if that is the best you can find I would pity the society you live in. But in reality you are just ignoring the majority of the population that is actually worth a damn as you put it. All the people that actually work for living, live reasonably good lives, contribute (netto) to society one way or another. Those people, you know.

Have you ever seen an obese, pregnant clown too floored from her sherm cigarettes to walk look on as her three children, also in clown make-up, bathe in orange faygo? Again, it's blatantly obvious you have no actual knowledge of these people. I myself have dabbled in the illicit businesses and have dealt with a wide array of less than savory characters (I've lost some close friends to heroin addiction) and the Juggalos are a class unto themselves.
Who are these people bothering? They have a need to belong, so they find people with common interests... Reminds me of everyone else ever... Are you not allowed to make friends unless your IQ is >140?

People like this aren't a unique case, the only thing unique here is their terrible taste in music, and the fact many of them are white trash (who would stab someone whether they were a juggalo or not). Like I said earlier in this thread, remove the fat ugly people and replace the music with happy hardcore or psytrance and you have an event that happens everywhere in the world. Every event like this has people who are too far gone/drugfucked to make a contribution even amongst their crazy subculture. I'm sure most people would have been keeping their distance from that guy.

All I can say to that is LOL, and as to your earlier post, here is yet another anecdote from someone who has ACTUALLY dealt with these people. Back in 05, I was a part of the DIY punk scene here in Ohio, and one night, we organized a local show that showed promise to be one of the biggest and most successful concerts in a long time. Lo and behold, Twiztid and a bunch of other ICP bands had the venue across the street that night, and we could not help but be quite worried (ICP fans are notorious for disrupting the concerts of other bands). After our opening act, about 200 or so people went outside for fresh air and cigarettes, only to be bombarded by faygo 3 liters being launched out of some sort of catapult by the clowns across the way, in addition to bits of trash, cans, and even glass bottles. It didn't take long for the punks to organize, and about 300 or so scene kids invaded the juggalo concert, and proceeded to shut down the 500 person event with overwhelming force. Sure, a fair number of people were arrested on both sides, and retaliation in this case may not have been the smartest idea, but the point is that these people are not content to live and let be, they make it their job to disrupt the lives of everyone around them.

Now THAT's celebrating anti-intellectualism.
it's less like celebration and more like marketing. it's the same thing with being a juggalo.
this thread is amusing to me because, no offense to anyone in particular, i would call a lot of people... what's the best word here, internally timid i suppose... and many people in this thread whether viewing or posting are just as timid as those who wear the silly face paint, fear the struggle of learning, and band together with like minded individuals so they can feel comfortable about their insecurities rather than facing them. so to take the step of evaluating other timid people and to look down on them just seems like you're projecting.
and don't get me wrong, i've met many juggalos, i had a kind of subtle goth phase in middle school when i had a hard time adjusting to post-puberty and many of them are definitely borderline retarded. but that doesn't mean you get to stand on the pedestal and act like you aren't until you put yourself out there to be evaluated just the same.
the juggalo movement is just one version. people who prefer to lose their sanity because the real world is too complicated for them are all "celebrating anti-intellectualism" imo. get a grip on reality and stop hiding behind whatever mask you don. there's a lot of people attending the masquerade in this thread who have themselves convinced that they aren't just because their mask isn't clown-colored.
I think the biggest issue is that they are just representing the extreme of the very big problem of the American society as a whole. Complete anti-intellectualism is pervasive through all of America's political process. Being intellectual is portrayed as negative (or at best useless) nearly everywhere. Starting with politics of course as this is the goal of this "movement" to make political process big media circus and voters easily manipulated by marketing techniques, but entertainment industry and journalism is used for that purpose also, to create negative stereotypes of intellectuals. The people from OP are just the extreme end of the spectrum and are somewhat less useful for those in power than those not so far gone, but still more useful than people who actually value knowledge, skepticism and critical thinking.
Even worse this anti-intellectualism is starting to spread even elsewhere in the world with the spread of using marketing techniques in political campaigns in other countries.
Hah, I feel like my intelligence is appreciated a lot more here in the US than in the UK. The US is a big fucking country and a bunch of retards in the middle of Texas, religious nutjobs up in Iowa or the Amnish in Ohio have little to no bearing on my life.

I would guess those who are too far gone into smoking and drugs are skinny as those things tend to do that and the rest is fat as they are poor, uneducated people living in America, so they eat bad food and do not exercise. But that is pure speculation and take it as such

This isn't a southern phenomena, but a country-wide one.
Juggalos are most prevelent in the rural midwest. I have always seen them as counter culture for retards-- "How can we separate oursevlves from this drab conservative lifestyle of our rural area? Lets paint our face, and say things people never want to hear". Over time they have come back around to some kind of decency and now promote a kind of religion and moral code. Basic shit like don't hit your kids or wife, don't rape ect.
We have a fuckton of them around here (Northern California), and they operate more like a street gang than anything very commonly have news reports of them doing break and enterings or stabbing people outside of bars and producing/selling meth.
Btw, i think that everyone here that talked bad about them must be a sad person, they are all "fucking" happy, let them be. Btw are americans in general saying that amount of "fucking"? or just a small portion?

Also, kind of funny how these two found exact opposite conclusions from watching the same thing:

Don't believe everything you see.
This. Other from the fact that these guys paint their faces, I'd say this is no different alot of other festivals, good and bad things that come with it.
Why does this feel like half bashing Juggalo half bashing the US?
Oh right, because it is..*sigh*
People being stupid isn't celebrating anti-intellectuism. It's them being stupid. People look far too deep into things. I don't know I really could care less what other people do as again it doesn't effect me what they do with themselves.
Hurting kids or others? Yeah obviously maybe instead of watching them do it you oh I don't know call child services for your state or the police as needed.
I just don't get the point of this conversation except to mock and laugh at these guys while make jabs at some Americans.

Anti-intellectualism really is a growing problem in the US though. And ICP * DOES* say "I dont wanna hear from no scientist cause those motherfuckers be lyin and gettin me pissed"
Never even this knew subculture existed. Not sure what I feel about it, just seems like a modern spin-off of the hippy movement that reminds me a lot of the civilization in Borderlands. I didn't get a lot of anti-intellectualism from watching the video, but didn't see much intelligence in it either (a nice way to put it).

Yeah, that song "Miracles", which we all know for the "magnets, how do they work?!?!" meme, was a pathetic attempt to debunk science but all it did was show how stupid they were.
One would figure that an evangelical group of whatever religion wouldn't be proud of juggalo culture. You know, getting high and drunk, tattooing and piercing themselves with the body that their god created for them, swinging their tits (Both men and women) around in public, etc. ICP..... sigh....

However, the idea that they even have the ability to express themselves like this is ideal. Hate it all you want, but hey, expressing yourself isn't always a bad thing.
Anyway, I feel this is just a lot of teenage angst in the work.

Used to listen to ICP in high school. Grew out of it. Didnt even know they still were active or of any subculture of Jugallos... Seems like the gathering of angsty and other not so mentally healthy people. That said, seems quite peaceful and maybe its an outlet for these people...

I actually love all the documentaries by this guy, and this one doesn't disappoint. Althought the life of the juggalo seems a bit odd, they seem like nice people who are just looking for a good time.

Yea, this tiny subculture of a subculture which is hardly even popular anymore is the problem with America.
Edit: Honestly most of the posts in this thread are about as ridiculous as the video. You can't take one marginal case like this and use it as a foundation to give commentary about an entire society. Calling other people stupid doesn't make you intelligent

Magnets being magical miracles that no one understands isn't that far off from the truth. (Not saying this ignorantly, I study electromagnetism)
As for the video, I really don't understand why everyone is so hateful towards this group of people. It seems like a group of people who really care about each other and value each other as family. They probably haven't got along well with their own family or known them, and have been able to really find happiness with this group of similar individuals.
As for this claim of anti-intellectualism, I don't see it. Are you interpreting the way they speak as being a measure of their intelligence? Also, the vast majority of them are clearly high/drunk, they're going to be saying stupid things while high just like any other group of individuals would. There are of course going to be some stupid people with some stupid quotes, but its ridiculous to generalize about them based on a few.
I thought it was kind of a touching documentary. If people are able to find a sense of family and happiness at this event once a year, I think that's great. And to judge them on little things like their speech, or make fun of their "woo woo" cheer is pathetic. Don't be such assholes just because people are different from you. I doubt you're all such well-adjusted intellectuals in the eyes of others either.

You have no right to forbid them expressing themselves (to a point), but you have every right to judge them. And doing drugs/smoking/drinking alcohol while pregnant is going too far, and actually should be criminal, unfortunately it would be nightmare to enforce such law.

It's not about them being stupid, it's about them valuing stupidity. Maybe they think it's provocative? I am a bit sad for them if they don't find anything better for being subversive.
I don't follow you on this think that people on TL are supposedly "more intelligent" than I don't know what. People here are perfectly normal and it infuriates me when I see people congratulating themselves about how smart the average user (and themselves in the process) are on this website.

People celebrate stupid shit all the time (or, at least, stuff that I would roll my eyes at).
There are plenty of traditions (cultural, religious, social, family, etc.) that are nonsensical in this day and age, but people them do just because they've always done it. Is that justification for it? Not really. Is that going to stop them from doing it? Not in the slightest.
As long as they're not hurting anyone, and as long as we don't *really* take them too seriously (just smile and nod), I don't really care too much. I'll be happy we have the right to do stupid things, but facepalm that we still do them.

You are talking about a group of people that pelted people on stage with stones simply because they don't like them. Obviously it is a seriously stupid idea to even consider going on stage for these people if you aren't a ICP related act, but no one ever deserves to receive such violence just for the fact that they weren't liked by the crowd.

I watched this, my friend told me he was laughing historically the whole time at how stupid these ppl were, i just thought the whole thing not just the people were not very smart, why would you shout "wooo woo" every five seconds its something like a meme it just makes them feel better while not helping at all. I read an article about how high self esteem breeds stupidity(not exactly but that was the summary) and i think it was right
Celebrating stupidity is getting all your political views from fox news ...
Overall, it's like anything else, you make a documentary, you find the stupidest weirdest funniest people you can, and make a 'documentary' based on that.
To me, this just looks like misfits bonding together and finding a reason for it.
Everyone I heard in the video talked pretty much about everyone being accepted no matter what, everyone being family, etc etc etc.
I would imagine people that are stupid, do drugs, feel isolated, been abused, been treated like shit, etc etc, would find that very appealing.
Beyond that, from what I saw, it doesn't seem much different from what you can find at any kind of big summer happening, be it Roskilde in Denmark, Metalfest in Gothenburg, or wherever.
On October 03 2011 04:06 h0oTiS wrote: why would you shout "wooo woo" every five seconds its something like a meme it just makes them feel better while not helping at all
I'd imagine it's something like yelling your sports teams slogan or whatever. Sounds stupid, but doesn't say anything about your intelligence.
I just want to point out that, although many of the juggalo's themselves are less than intelligent, their 'family' is by no means predicated on 'anti-intelectualism'.
Forget religion, i much of this in politics today.
The point is that many of these people come from difficult back-grounds, be it poverty, abuse, or any number of adverse social conditions.
What they get from their gatherings is; not only the sense, but the actual benefit, of belonging to a community that will accept them as they are without judging them.
The fact is, that practically by definition anyone who belongs to the SC2 community is from a privileged social background, compared to what appears to the majority of juggalo's.
I will say that as I have no personal experience of the juggalo community, I have no right to pass judgment on them (as a community), considering our different social backgrounds.
I may, however judge individual juggalo's based on actions which are objectively bad, such as the pregnant woman who appears to be smoking a cigarette.

High self esteem is crucial for a lot of thing, including progaming. If you look at all the top GSL players Nestea, MC, MVP they all have huge self esteem and egos. What self esteem really does is it allows you to show people who you are rather than hiding behind an image you put up to defend your own low self esteem(for better or worse.) Also from my limited knowledge that most of them( like half in the video) seem to have low self esteem.
The woop woop thing is to feel unity. They may not be the brightest bunch but come on its not because they say 2 words to people in their group to bond with them.

I wasn't saying they were hippies, but from the video, there are obvious similarities in behavior. You're obviously right that actions speak louder than words, but from the video there was no real display of actions which contradicted the attitude they presented.
Like I said in my first post though, I never even knew they existed before the OP so hearing now that they stone musicians and act in other violent ways, I might not compare them to hippies anymore.

I don't see how it makes America look bad any more than a captured serial killer in X country makes X country look bad. They're obviously a very small minority and I'm sure I'm not the only American who had no idea they even existed.
People who make such broad generalizations about other groups of people based on minority cases make themselves look bad.

I wasn't saying they were hippies, but from the video, there are obvious similarities in behavior. You're obviously right that actions speak louder than words, but from the video there was no real display of actions which contradicted the attitude they presented.
They also have obvious similarities in behavior to large apes, but they're still technically humans (somehow).
They could probably learn how to play Starcraft if they were forced to, an Ape couldn't. That's how they are still technically humans xD (yes, the defining trait of humanity is the capacity to understand the basics of starcraft)

this is totally not related to any kind of hippy movement.
You kidding? Every other person is talking about family/love/happiness being the most important thing. Did you watch the video?
You are talking about a group of people that pelted people on stage with stones simply because they don't like them. Obviously it is a seriously stupid idea to even consider going on stage for these people if you aren't a ICP related act, but no one ever deserves to receive such violence just for the fact that they weren't liked by the crowd.
Like I said before, there are so many reasons why juggalos deserve to be derided but this video doesn't really show it. Anyone can fucking talk about how family/love/happiness is the most important thing. If you haven't noticed, politicians of every colour and shape talk about these things until their lips dry. Keeping such things on the tip of your tongue doesn't make you a good person. It's about what you do, and far too many juggalos do not act like decent people. Moreover, juggalo communities often not just accept and tolerate, but encourage each other to act in such ways.
Well my analysis of them is derived specifically from the description in the OP, in addition to the video.

You know what... Somebody should start a Juggalo Star League where people train Juggalos to try to play SC2. They'd be an auxiliary team member that would only be able to compete in Juggalo events however.
My first thought is these people are massive bogans and I generally despise people who celebrate the fact they are stupid.
Do they even know they are acting stupid though? I'm sorry I don't know anything about this sub-culture, and the video nor the op shows how they are being willfully ignorant(though I couldn't watch the whole video, sorry). Some people are just born stupid, and how can you fault them for that? Yes, most of them probably fried their brains with drugs, but again, we don't know their background so it's not our place to judge.

I really don't have a problem with Juggalos. ICP fans are rarely missionary zealots trying to convert people and ICP isn't blared over the radio in public places. I think I've known about 3 people who were fans of this band. They were all tall fat white guys, but fairly well adjusted and un-abrasive people. Obviously I'm sure there's some assholes who like ICP out there, but ICP's fans/music has yet to cause me any grief or annoyance. If those two things are met, I don't really care what they listen to or what their subculture is.
The Katy Perry/Lady Gaga asshole dickfaces, on the other hand, I do have a beef with. 75%+ I dislike strongly as human beings.
I've never heard of this sub-culture before so I know nothing about it beyond what was shown in this video and what was written in op. With that being said...
The word I heard the most in this video was family. Obviously there was alot of swearing and people in general being fucked up but that was the point, letting go of your normal life and just relaxing and having fun. Getting away from everyday life. Even though alot of people were high on something or wasted they all seemed to have a good time and just accepting everyone for who they are. You cant say that about alot of places, not even tl.
So get off your high horse and check yourself and no this event wasnt celebrating being dumb, it was celebrating having something in common which brought people together from all walks of life and enojying each others company.
and regarding the "woop woop"(I think it's woop) it's something you say that bears meaning to them, something about being an ICP fan or whatever. Like shouting out you favorite teams name or whatever when youre at a game. Nothing more nothing less. It's funny how some here can judge others because they are saying something which they themselves dont understand and hence you just assume it's something stupid. There's a word for that.
Yet still you can judge them and call them stupid but think so highly of yourself. That's funny though.
Man I thought this thread was going maybe transition from talking about boring bitch-ass Juggalos to something cool like Wooks, but instead it's just all hate on Juggalos (no problem with that) and weird comments from left field about America/capitalism/how humanity makes you sad.

I don't like ICP, I don't like partying, I don't like ludeness or promiscuity, I don't like aggression as a form of expression, but I could actually see myself enjoying that. I'd rather be around down to earth people like that than be with people who are biggots, and need to think their better than everyone else all the time.
Let me make sure I'm getting this right, anyone who takes drugs/drinks alcohol is distorting their reason and senses is 100% celebrating anti-intellectualism? It just seems like we are assuming by their actions that they hold little responsibility for what they do and think while they are at that carnival place, but that just seems like apathy to me, which is more of sign of immaturity.

There's a difference between bigots and humanists.
WTF, are we judging people by the way they are when having consumed several liters of alcoholic beverages + other narcotics ?
Is this propaganda of some Australian intellectual nerd think tank or something ?
We are shown a video of an annual gathering of ICP fans who have given themselves the name Juggalo
Then the OP labels them as anti-intellectual and the last time I checked putting the word "anti" in front of a word it means "against" So according to the op, these people are against intellectuals, and they are not, it is not a identifying marker for this Juggalo tribe. Okay, most of them are not from the top 10 universities mentioned a few posts above, but I don't see them engage in book-burnings.
An Australian talking about a waste of space made me lol
But one of the downsides of being smart and intellectually gifted (like most people in this thread.....) is that most people are, and always will be, stupid. Be glad that most of them don't think the apocalypse is coming within their lifetime and horoscopes have any significance....oh wait...
Oh fuck it.....burn all the stupid people, buuurrn them !
In all honesty you could take a camcorder to a frat party, rock festival such as Ozzfest, or tailgate parties at a Football game and make a video of pretty much the same sort of activities. Like it or hate it people partying and saying/doing dumb things is part of our society.
As for the attack on Tila Tequila yes it was a bit much but she brought the incident on herself, she was insulting the fans before going on stage, was told not to go on, and refused originally to leave the stage when security asked her to because she wanted to show her boobs off

Emphasis on family is not humanist, not in anyway. For the people affected by poverty, those people were born into povery, juggalos are not born (regardless of what they might say). Some of the neighbors from down my road are juggalos. Seem like alright people. I occasionally go down there to borrow movies. They seem like a pretty normal couple who keep to themselves and don't cause any trouble.
On the other hand, his wife has a younger brother who is extremely irresponsible. He's got kids he doesn't pay for cause he doesn't have a job, he's been to jail about every other year of his life and half the people in the neighborhood know to look out for him because he's been known to steal even from his own family.
I think you have good and bad in every culture of people. This music or culture could mean get fucked up do drugs and ditch all responsibility to one person and the next it is a sense of community and acceptance that they didn't get elsewhere. I don't see the problem with it. Looked like a decent party in the video. I probably would have gone when I was younger but since, I've had kids, I don't think I'd fit in with most of these people.

Being excessively tolerant or intolerant is bad because it's in excess. Excess is those cases is objectively bad. You are supposed to be intolerant of alcoholics, you should not tolerate that shit. You should also not tolerate this populism and religious zealotry.
I don't know how many times I should say it, but these people are populists and religious fanatics.
I feel that you're making a fair bit of assumptions because you have some odd sort of hate for this group of people.
The Insane Clown Posse released a cd with a religious message and it makes every Juggalo a religious fanatic? How is populism anti-intellectual? How do you know that none of these people are born into and affected by poverty?
I fail to see how any part of what they do celebrates anti-intellectualism (other than what I've stated previously) or how they act like 'religious zealots'.
There are juggalos that have their every thought and movement affected by their religion. That makes them zealots or fanatics. It's similar to the difference between Zionists and Jews and Islamists and Muslims, there are Juggalists. Is there a 100% spread of Juggalism amongst Juggalos? Definitely not, but the original band are Juggalists or at least fake Juggalists trying to move their brand. That makes the ideal form Juggalists, as the original is that way.

The difference between other groups is the originator. The original republican would not be an example of the Republican Base, or Tea Party or whatever. The extremists in this movement are the original example.
This is a molehill, at least on a scale of Juggalos to non-Juggalos. But if we look into ideals and that their acceptable within this culture, but also in other cultures, then we have the problem. This would be the absolute easiest group to start with because of their size, history, and creation.

Did everyone in this thread miss the fact that this is all just a big joke? I'm usually not one to poop on a discussion, but I think arguing about the origin of populism in the juggalo subculture is just a little... I dunno retarded? Not smoking while pregnant retarded, but still pretty dumb.
To me it just seems like anyone who truly believes that by hammering out the details of the flaws of juggaloism, they are somehow doing this planet some great service, is more dangerous, and more deluded than any face painted juggalo.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
Watching intelligent people vapidly debate shit that it's obvious nobody gives two fucks about is more unsettling to me then seeing some dude with a mid eighties IQ huffing whipits in his campsite.
Let's be honest. A lot of these people never had any potential to begin with, and by virtue of that fact no potential is being wasted. The Juggalo Carnival is like an attraction where you have to be "At least this stupid" just to ride. Juggaloism isn't attracting America's best and brightest future leaders of tomorrow. Our Ivy League schools aren't plagued by juggalos. It's a special club for those vestigal hominids who still linger among us like shadows of our evolutionary past.
Am I somehow alarmed that above all odds two fat dudes who have no talent somehow figured out a way to preach acceptance and unconditional love to the bottom sector of society? Nope, not really. I almost think in some kind of strange way it was a badass thing to do.

This is the sad truth, their Juggalo experience does not stay within this week of festivities. A guy I grew up with got involved in the Juggalo scene. He just recently got sentenced to twelve years in jail for shooting two kids. If it stayed in their scene that would be one thing, but I guess that could be said about many different social scenes.

When writing the OP I thought about not including the word "American" in the title because it would somehow lead to America bashing. I chose to keep it in as it is the title of the documentary but no where in my OP did I even talk about America as a country, I understand when a lot of people are lining up to talk crap you can get defensive about this stuff though.
As for the Juggalos I am as I said in the OP unsure what to think of them and talked about my gut reactions then recognized my prejudice. The thing that gets me and it is not unique to these people are people who are content to sit back and not contribute to society then rely on society to bail them out with handouts. I can sympathize with poverty and poor upbringing but it seems these people (several examples in the video) are making no attempt to get out of the viscous cycle and they too themselves will raise kids likewise (broad generalisation and impossible to truly say just from watching video). There are so many people in this world who would be thankful to live in a developed country like America and would make the most of their opportunities (not unique to America, people in general seem ungrateful and there are deadbeats in all society including my own).
Most of the people they interview are either drunk or stoned, obviously they aren't going to sound very intelligent. It's pretty silly to generalize a whole group of people based off 1 video.
Well, I can't say that I agree with these people's ideals and what they stand for. Still if they arn't causing other people any harm they should be able to decide for themselves what to do with their lives, however idiotic it may seem to others.
Dragging kids along to these sorts of things seems a bit wrong, to me anyway. They don't always have a choice when it comes down to it.
Like mentioned before, a lot of this is about feeling like you're a part of something, a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself. Like so many other sub-cultures, movements etc.

Intellectualism relies on not just a miniscule number of individuals. Sure there is a relatively small amount of geniuses that create huge breakthroughs, but they still require the help of less intelligent people (though they are still by all means very intelligent people) to get all the work done. They also require a pro-intellectual environment to get the support and funding for their projects. Theres also a lot of seemingly small developments from the R&D departments of corporations that improve our quality of life.
Harmless stupidity doesnt hurt of course, but i really dont see why you would think it would be more praiseworthy than intellectualism of any kind.

This is the same argument many racists make, sometimes the hatred from your experiences or confrontations cloud your better judgement that the actions of a single or few members of a group do not speak for the majority of it and that in the end we are all human.

My two friends (bf and gf) are juggalos, or at least used to be. They have tattoos that are all about it. They live a lifestyle like the juggalos, but do not associate themselves with them any longer. They are really nice, they leave the door open, but they do drugs and drink a lot. Aren't there a few people out there who have suggested that Insane Clown Posse are really just "trolling", and are actually not at all like their stage-personas? I personally can't stand them and think they're fools; but hey, in this day in age, who the hell knows?

Because harmless stupidity is also useless stupidity. "Self-serving" intellectualism has benefits to everyone.
Self serving intellectualism has always done more harm then good. You must've missed the economic collapse it has brought on, or the Fox news channel that it has spawned, amongst other things.
O.O Intellectualism brought about economic collapse and Fox news?
What is this, I don't even...
How do you even begin to link intellectualism to economic collapse and the living polar opposite of intellectualism, Fox News?
Basically faux intellectualism. You can't really be an intellectual and not be objectively self-critical. Or you can and that's self-serving intellectualism.
I thought ICP died like 5 years ago? Interesting that it's still around. I don't really care there are a lot of stupid people out there, they just seem to be lonely and doing this forms some sort of support group.
I say live and let live, until they start negatively affecting other people.
I think it should be noted that fighting against intellectualism is the same type of argument as fighting against the pursuit honest government. The only reason anyone would do that is because they found some group to feel part of that hates what has otherwise been a rational and positive influence on any society it has ever occurred to to try.
Every attempt argument is a perversion of the topic and a sideways glance at something using the whole cover perspective of minority rights. As if refusing to have evidence for your claims or to refuse something simply because it's science is some how an "oppressed" minority.
Uneducated, ignorant people have always been a product of negative parts of society. Poverty, segregation, etc. What makes you think that being uneducated is a good thing or as good as being educated in any way?
Keep hating you guys sound like jackasses, in any group or sub culture there are morons.Just because some one like a type of music doesn't mean they are anti-intellectual quit being ignorant.

Not sure if serious, did you even watch the video? We're not talking about the type of music they like ... -.-....... did you even read most of the posts/thread here?
They must have severely twisted ideals if this is how they want to spend their days on this earth. It's like they realised just how worthless they are, and that they'll never be anything, so they decided to just give up on life and began to embrace their own stupidity.
I'm all for freedom and doing what you want, but people like these are sickening.
I liked ICP when I was a kid because it was silly and it made me laugh. It was schtick. Then they started getting all serious and it just got embarassing. The same thing happened with GWAR. Its a shame really because when taken as comedy those acts had value.
Edit: I couldnt finish wacthing the docu. Epic supernova of facepalming stupidity.
I clearly missed the anti-intellectualism bit... Sure they were dumb but at what point did they celebrate being stupid? At one point a guy claims there's a brain surgeon there, clearly a lie but that's hardly anti-intellectual.
Personally, if people want to do stuff like that, why not? People there were happy. No, they didn't cure cancer over the gathering, a couple of them may even develop it as a result of it. But who am I to judge? I don't know what's happened in their lives, there may be reasons why they all seem to jump at the chance to be part of a "family" and be accepted.
As long as they're not harming anyone else, whatever. They should do what they want.

I agree, but that doesn't mean that I have to withdraw my judgement. I still think that they're utter scum.
Though this is America so they have every right to act like complete idiots, that does not mean it's wrong to call them on what they are...complete idiots.

Fair enough, as long as you're not harming anyone I think it's ok for you to hate the shit out of whatever you like.
Personally they're not the kind of people I'd make my friends, or waste my time on at all, but people are complex and I'm not going to judge.

especially that "family" which brought their 7 and 11 year old sons to a damn hardcore festival. seriously guys...
If you don't hate these kinds of people then it is very likely that you've raised up in a typical white middle class suburb that only has a handful of kids that stab people as their resident "gangster" population for you to show off your "hard life". Maybe that's a bit much and silly to those living in a third world country but you know what I'm trying to get at.
If you deal with people like juggalos on a daily basis... let's just say it gets very tiring. It's not that their out to be dangerous or anything. They are just stupid and get your way because of their stupidity that's all. It's annoying as hell.
I don't get this at all, although I kind of do. A lot of these people, this is the high point in there life and their chance to make the biggest impact on the world. So I guess it's them living to their potential? I've also considered knowledge and wisdom one of the greatest pursuits in life, so this really makes very little sense to my perspective lol
I haven't been around someone who referred to themselves as a Juggalo since early high school (which is over 10 years ago for me) so I'm one of the "surprised this is still around" folks.
That being said, most of the Juggalo's I knew were closer to the guy in the red shirt at 2:37-3:17 in the video than the idiots the video showcases. Obviously they want to make this entertaining, so they have to pick the crazy/drugged out people to put on camera more than the rational ones. For those who have never met a Juggalo, save your opinion of them until you do. Don't base it on this video.
For all their downfalls, I can say that the Juggalo's were the most open-minded and accepting people I knew in high school. I grew up in an extremely conservative part of the US (lived next to Jerry Falwell for 16 years, seriously) where being gay or just not christian could get you beaten up on a daily basis. The Juggalo's at my school were the only group I knew that openly accepted gays/lesbians/non-chirsitans as if it were no big deal. They didn't care what you wore, what part of town you were from, who your parents were, who your siblings were, or even what music you listened to as long as you showed them the same respect.
Long story short: Every culture/subculture has a bunch of idiots, and idiots like drugs. Idiots on drugs are entertaining to watch. Not all idiots wear clown make-up, and not everyone wearing clown make-up is an idiot.

I have witnessed literally dozens of innocent passersby assaulted by faygo showers, these people make it their job to get people to hate them, as I've already posted in this thread multiple times. Here in Ohio and elsewhere in the Midwest, Juggalos are a relatively minor yet still threatening nuisance, and it is common knowledge that when one sees a group of them to steer clear or prepare for a fight. As has already been posted repeatedly, they are classified as criminal gangs in states with the greatest numbers of them for a reason.
Smoking and drinking while pregnant and leaving your kids at home to go smoke weed and celebrate two rapping white guys in clown make-up. These people most certainly got their priorities right.
People who are perceived as less-than-intellectual are gathering together with the intention of having a good time and being accepted by like minded people. Are you really so high on yourself and your way of life that you need to look down on people who do things differently?
I don't advocate getting FUBAR'd on whippits and whatever else, but who does this hurt? It's just another scene. People go to clubs and get fucked up on all kinds of drugs. Have you ever been to a rave where everyone was sober? What is it exactly that puts ravers above Juggalos in terms of intelligence? Why not create threads for every sub-culture so we can laugh about how much better we are than them?

Ok, well that's a different story then. Spraying shit on people and starting fights does affect other people, which crosses a line.
This reminds me of people that used to judge Marlyn Manson by their really horrible (generalizing here) following of goth wannabes. ICP actually has a lot of intellectualism in their work but people see some dumbass spraying soda on an innocent passerby and judge the whole thing based on that. I guess it would be sort of like judging SC2 based on the 'community' you see predominantly in an LR thread.

I am not a juggalo, I have never painted my face with clown stuff or sprayed soda on someone. Champagne yes but I was in drag so thats different... However I have sat down and talked with them at an after party, they are pretty smart guys. Manson was getting derailed by his fans, ICP raps about their fans specifically. The fact they are degenerate members of society that will eventually be judged. Not defending the culture, just saying a bit of education and lyric listenin might be in order.
It doesnt really bother me that a group of people want to meet up and collectively act like shit heads, but when some one does something as obviously irresponsible as drinking and smoking while pregnant I get a little angry. Even being there while pregnant seems like a pretty big risk as so many people around you are going to be smoking cigaretts/drugs. As far as culture goes they are kind of on to somthing, accepting people no matter what they look like and what walk of life they come form is something that would be good for the rest of us to try out some time.

Alas, one can easily hide behind the veil of deniability when it comes to the contained and limited nature of forum posting, but I assure you, if given the time and space, I could list literally every single lyric from every single song and not a single bit would qualify as anything better than the musings of a slightly retarded white trash 8th grader. I can continue if you'd like, as it seems you've taken up the cause of the maliciously stupid.

Do you have a counter example of some deep, complex and intelligent lyrics from their music?

You might want to read what I wrote but I think this is a failed conversation. I was just trying to give a perspective which on some is lost I suppose.
Well you said they are actually pretty smart guys, to look at their lyrics, then some one posted snippets of their lyrics that quite frankly seem pretty bad and stupid to me, then you said kind of vaguely that he shouldn't argue like "this". I ask why not? you said look at lyrics, some one did. Say why he is wrong not just that he is wrong. like some one else above said, post some lyrics of them saying something intelligent and then maybe ill accept your perspective, maybe even change mine. I only know them from the meme of them saying magnets are miracles and, i think, that the scientific explanation is BS, which makes them retards in my eyes.

ICP actually has a lot of intellectualism in their work but people see some dumbass spraying soda on an innocent passerby and judge the whole thing based on that. I guess it would be sort of like judging SC2 based on the 'community' you see predominantly in an LR thread.
Except Manson, in real life, is a super fucking down-to-earth, cool guy who does his best to calmly and rationally debunk the myths in interviews.
If you have ever listened to ICP talk they're just fucking stupid.
"I WANT A RUSTY AXE I WANNA KNOW VOODOO A FAT BITCH NAMED BRIDGETT And a little sip of Faygo, too 'TILL I GET MY SHIT, IN THIS MOTHERFUCKER I WON'T NEVER DIIIIEEE!"-song, "I Want my Shit"
"Three little piggies just to make a piggy pie. There's nothing like the squeal when you hear a piggy die. I might use a gun, (No!) I might use an axe, (yes!) The carnival's in town, come and get your piggy snacks!"-song, "Piggy Pie"
Both of those songs are off of ICP's best selling albums.......I'll let their lyrics speak for themselves.

But he did read what you wrote and clearly disagrees with you strongly. Do you have any clips of them talking in real life or anything?
Like "education and lyric listenin", do you have any particular examples? Or are we just supposed to take your word for it?
He responded directly to what you were saying, so I don't understand how that's not fair game.
Regardless of how offensive, vulgar, religious, etc. any of their lyrics are, the content is irrelevant. The writing is terrible. The rhymes are less sophisticated than a fucking Drake rhyme and less coherent than lil wayne.

This is anecdotal at best, although all commentary on their writing is based on personal opinion. If you listened to more than the 4 songs that top the youtube search, you might find there are actually quite a few tracks that are well written, well timed, and well rhymed.
If you're mad that someone else is brazenly trumpeting their beliefs with ignorance, perhaps you should be mad that you are doing it too
Why would anyone celebrate that they're not optimal? Maybe we should make a group: "Us who rage in starcraft 2!"? We'll call ourselves "Idranians".
In all seriousness, Those facemasks looks kind of cool. I wonder how they did it..Must be a miracle!
Ok, ok. In real seriousness. I think its entirely ok to judge someone who basically admits to themselves that they're stupid. If not these people, who else?

Someone either didn't watch the video, or misinterpreted the concept behind the gathering.
They aren't "admitting to themselves that they're stupid". They aren't celebrating stupidity. It's a once a year thing where people with similar lifestyles and tastes in music can come together and be accepted regardless of looks, beliefs, etc.
Wanting acceptance doesn't make you stupid. Smoking and drinking while pregnant is stupid for a certainty, but I'm 99% sure that ICP and friends have never said or sang anything encouraging this.

This was Really well made. Great motion camera portraiture, beautifully edited and composed. Minimal, and not condescending or crudely judgmental. For What it is, this is a project that most people could Never undertake nor make it look as good . The subject, Which is being scrutinized is something else all together ... Sean Dunne has a great style and I look forward to his next projects. woot-woot.

Inspiration for the song's lyrics came via the Internet generation and group members Joseph Bruce and Joseph Utsler raising children. In response to both modern jadedness and their children experiencing wonders of the world for the first time, the group wanted to write a song about natural phenomena humans experience in life which often go unacknowledged. The closing lyrics encourage listeners to take time to look at the world and "appreciate the things that life has to offer". According to Bruce, "What's a shame is how people walk around blind to it all. They lost their spirit about everything. If you can’t even see the miracle in animals, then you must have never truly loved a pet." He believes that scientific explanations can sometimes kill the intriguing mysteries of the world, such has how ancient pyramids were made. Bruce admits that the song's lyrics discuss "things [... that] may not be actual miracles. They may have scientific facts explaining them [...] But nonetheless, these things are still incredible [...] and they should be appreciated." He added that the group's use of the word 'miracle' was intended to mean "something fuckin’ amazing and incredible, [... a] special, awesome event, [...] a great, wonderful thing."
The lyrics focus on introspective themes which critics considered to be uncommon in Insane Clown Posse's music; however, Bruce states that these themes are important in the duo's work, and reveal their depth. In response to accusations that the group has changed its style and gone soft, Bruce calls the song "classic ICP," noting that the group has always included one or two deep and meaningful songs on every album, and that this is just the first time that they've created a video for one of those songs. Several reviewers have suggested that the song contains an anti-science message. Bruce refutes the claim, explaining that "the [song's] concept is about appreciating everything in this world. It's not about God; [...] religion; [.. or] science."Joseph Laycock of Religion Dispatches suggests that rather than rejecting science, the song disapproves of disenchantment.
The fact that inspiration came from the internet generation kinda seems to indicate that we really only have ourselves to blame. The song is about more than just two apes trying to figure out a fucking magnet.
The school I went to in ninth grade was dominated by juggalo's. To them: good sentence = generic musings * the word shit.
Juggalo culture revolves around giving pitiful friendless men a chance to be social, and slutty as shit girls a place where they can get a ton of attention.

So an author-centric interpretation of complete bullshit is the only option? A clown telling you his inspiration comes from something defensible and worthwhile hardly changes the listener and reader side of the equation, in which literally millions of intelligent people would react incredibly negatively. Furthermore, consider their target audience. If we ourselves had difficulty teasing out an intelligent meaning, than how are crackhead white trash clowns going to go about a deep analysis of a song that, on the surface, seems riddled with luddite notions.

What is wrong with everyone in Society having a place where they can go and be accepted for who they are? I am not a juggalo although I do know their music and what they are about. I have watched this video for reference as well as having many close friends/ family that are part of this.
I feel that people today are quick to judge things that are not the norm they prescribe to. Do you not think that people judge you as some nerd that plays an internet game? Do you know they also think you are a virgin covered in acne? Do you know that they think you live in your moms basement? This is all just crap that people to do get around actually getting to know someone who may do things that are outside of their comfort range and they base it on appearance. In American society no one actually cares about each other nor do they want to try. It is so hard to find people who want to create true friendship that why not gather with people who share one single ideal even if it is something as small as music? I'm probably wasting my time with this but if people broaden their view they may actually find something interesting about themselves and the people that walk by them everyday.

READ THE THREAD OMG, this is more than a simple social group, they are a criminal gang that predicates it's sense of self-worth on the hatred of others and a general lack of acceptance. The majority of regular fans of any music would be hard pressed to give you a detailed and accurate song meaning for every track they like. I agree with you in that the majority of ICP's fanbase probably aren't sitting somewhere trying to decipher the hidden meanings behind each song, but what I'm saying is that there is (slightly) more to what these guys rap about beyond axe-murdering and Faygo, and to label a whole sub-culture as stupid or crackheads based off of a 30 minute documentary in which a handful of people out of a hundred thousand were interviewed is pretty closed-minded.

What I've been saying this whole and will continue to trumpet is the fact that I, along with practically every subjectively "normal" person I've known, have grown up surrounded by these people, their concerts, their gangs, their street corners, and their damn faygo showers, and they are not a group to simply be tolerated. Hell, I've even known relatively normal, if not somewhat outcast kids from my middle school days that still showed promise until they became immersed in the culture. The end result has been drug addiction, ostracism, and prison time, and I'll be damned if a bunch of internet personalities get on their high horses and tell me to accept this movement.

"There have been several incidents of criminal activity attributed to self-identified Juggalos.[9][10][11][12] Some media outlets have attributed the incidents to the music produced by Psychopathic Records. Although Juggalos have denied any connection to gang activity,[6] authorities have classified them as a gang in Utah;[13] Arizona;[6] Monroe County, Pennsylvania;[14][15] and Modesto, California.[16] Because of this, some schools have prohibited students from wearing Insane Clown Posse related paraphernalia.[17][18]"
Straight from wikipedia, and it is out of date, as Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois have declared them criminal gangs similarly. Took me 30 seconds bro.

READ THE THREAD OMG, this is more than a simple social group, they are a criminal gang that predicates it's sense of self-worth on the hatred of others and a general lack of acceptance. Along those lines, and as can be found in an abundance of lyrics, they go out of their way to heckle, assault, and generally disrupt the lives of those around them. I'm all for community and the forsaken finding their place in society, but this is something entirely different.
How do you know that? So your trying to say that every person that listens to rap sells drugs and carries a gun too? Judging a people by the content of the music they listen to is absurd. You obviously do not know many people that listen to this type of music from personal experience I have never felt unaccepted by the people who listen to this music.

Juggalo culture revolves around giving pitiful friendless men a chance to be social, and slutty as shit girls a place where they can get a ton of attention.
Meh i just find them disgusting and annoying to listen too. I think the difference is that they are desperately trying to be a juggalo wheas I am just someone who happens to play videogames (not somone who is sensitive to how much of a "gamer" he appears to others). I don't frantically cling to a culture in a pitiful attempt to feel good about myself. That kind of conformity is just lol.

Quite an extrapolation you've gone about there, and it could not be more wrong. I love rap/hip-hop, and coming from Toledo, OH I've been around all sorts of illegal activity and poverty-stricken culture, and most of the people I've known would tell you that the black crack dealer on the corner is more trustworthy than a juggalo.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information, friend. What exactly makes them a criminal gang? What hatred of others are you referring to? ICP frequently denounces bigotry. I'm not sure what the basis is for your statements..
So several states in your country have decided that Juggalos are a criminal gang. This MUST mean it's true! No state in the US has ever been wrong about anything, right?
There is no organization behind these people. There is no hierarchy, no command structure, no website telling them to go forth and be hooligans. Juggalo is just a name for a fan of ICP. If these people are committing crimes, I can understand (to a point) why people would associate Juggalos with crime. You know, kinda the same way people associate black people with crime, asian people with bad driving, and jewish people with money.
Do you see how fucking ignorant that looks?
(Please note, I don't actually associate black people with crime, etc. etc. Trying to make a point)
EDIT: You also forgot to paste in the bottom of that article you quoted, so I'll do that for you now.
Psychopathic Records and Insane Clown Posse have repeatedly denounced violence within the fandom. Alex Abbiss, former CEO of Psychopathic Records, has suggested that many of the incidents had been committed by crazy individuals that only claim to be Juggalos as an excuse for their actions

There is no difference in the two statements. For several years I listened to ICP I did not do drugs, hurt people, or involve myself in criminal activity. Plain and simple they are just people like me and you that listen to this type of music. Do some do the things you said? Yes without a doubt but that can be said of any group that does anything. I too listen to rap probably more adamantly than most people so dont twist what Im saying there as well.

I've been reading the thread since it started, post for post. Don't lash out at me just because you've had shitty experiences; you're generalizing about a fanbase when you shouldn't be. You have every right to be upset at the people who did that shit to you, and I'm truly sorry you had to go through that. But the majority of so-called Juggalos aren't like that.
My conversations with every juggalo i've ever met and from paying attention to the lyrics and images in the music videos i've seen from icp have led me to come to my conclusions. I apologize for making a blanket statement that apparently incriminates your juggalo friends as losers. however I am moreso talking about the group mentality and the "idealized" juggalo rather than specifically criticizing your coke can using hombres.

I dont have any close friends that listen to ICP, I do not care about your opinions, and there is no "idealized" juggalo. The entire point that is made with being a juggalo is being different and accepting people for who and what they are and not branding them as "pitiful friendless men a chance to be social, and slutty as shit girls". Do what you want but just know closing yourself off from new ideas and experiences only hurts you.

I don't even like ICP, but let's sit down and decipher the lyrics of their song 'Miracle.' From the title of the song, one can already surmise the premise of the tune. A miracle is a great blessing, a joy to behold. 'We got a theory, see like, we got a theory about magic and miracles. That’s right… If magic is all we ever known then it’s easy to miss what really goes on, but I have seen miracles in every way and it have seen miracles every day, Oceans spanding beyond my site, and a million stars way above em at night, we don’t have to be high to look in the sky, and know that is a miracle open wide. Look at the mountains trees the seven seas, and everything chillin under water please, hot lava, snow, rain and fog, long neck giraffes, pet cats and dogs. I have seen 85 thousand people all in one room together as equal, pure magic is the birth of my kids I’ve seen shit that shock your eyelids, the sun and the moon even mars the milky way fuckin shooting starts, ufo’s, a river flows, plant a little seed and nature grows, Niagara falls and the pyramids, everything you believed in as kids, fuckin rainbows after it rains, there’s enough miracles here to blow your brain, I fed a fish to a pelican and Frisco bay and he tried to eat my cell phone he ran away, and music is magic pure and clean you feel it you can hear it and it can’t be seen. '
Well it's obvious from this passage that they see the beauty in life; the 'miracle' in their existence. These miracles fascinate to no end; they claim no knowledge of how these miracles work (unlike some of the posters here), but instead revel in the fact that they have the fortune of experiencing it at all in the first place.
'Are you a believer in miracles? (Music it’s all magic, you can’t even hold it) Do you notice and recognize miracles? It’s just there in the air, are you a believer in miracles? (Pure motherfucking magic, this shit will blow your MF mind.) Music is a lot like love, it’s all a feeling and it feels the room from the floor to the ceiling, I’ve seen miracles all around me, stop and look around its all astounding, water, fire air and dirt, fucking magnets, how do they work? I don’t want to talk to a scientist, ya’ll MF lying and getting me pissed, solar eclipse and vicious weather, 15,000 Juggalos together and I love my mom for giving me this time on this planet, take nothing for granted, I seen a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, miracles aint nothing to lye, shaggys little boys look just like shaggy and my little boy looks just like daddy, miracles each and everywhere you look and nobody has to stay where they put, this world is yours for you to explore, it’s nothing but miracles beyond your doors, the dark carnival is your invitation, to witness that of there our explanation, take a look at this fine creation and enjoy it better with appreciation, crows ghosts, the midnight coasts, the wonders of the world, mysteries, the most. Just open your mind and in no way to ignore the miracles of everyday, that’s real. Are you a believer in miracles? (Magic every in this bitch, it’s all around you and you don’t even know it.) Do you notice and recognize miracles? It’s just there in the air, are you a believer in miracles? (Pure motherfucking magic, this shit will blow your MF mind.)'
This passage is the same feeling really; the feeling of love and joy found in everyday life. The only line that makes me roll my eyes is 'I don't want to talk to a scientist.' Many scientists chose their profession for the exact reason these writers love life; they see how extraordinary our universe is and wish to know more. Of course, the more one learns, the less one understands, but that's a whole different tangent.

Fargo north dakota?
I wouldn't say we had a ton my age though. I graduated in 06 and I would say most Juggalos I met were when I worked at McDonalds and were 4-6 years older.
This is the wonderful thing about America. You are entitled to your stupid beliefs up until the point where they start interfering with other people's lives. That said, as long as they aren't taking an aggressive posture in their anti-intellectualism(like picking on smart people), then what they are doing isn't stupid (as far as beliefs go). Those of lesser intellects should not be picked on for having said problem, nor should they be ashamed of it. It's just the way they are.
The interview on the O'Reily factor is interesting. Like it or not they are role models to their followers. Sure you can't program them by simply saying go smoke something but people/kids are impressionable and if enough people around them keep saying its ok to do drugs/commit crime they will accept it. Just weird, why you even bother saying that to a kid.
If the meme "What is this I don't even.." has ever been applicable this would have to be the most approriate time for it. But my god, I can't even like...wtf.
I'm all for free speech, but what the hell. Like my god. I have to think about this
So, I tried to watch as much of the documentary as I could, but I couldn't make it past the part where the guy drops the f-bomb more often than most teenagers say "like" or "um". From what I could tell, all of these juggalos seem to think that being a juggalo means doing whatever you want and not caring about the consequences of what they do. To me, think is a fairly horrible outlook on life, and won't get them into anything worthwhile for society, and unfortunately they don't care about anything at all.

You missed something huge from that documentary.

It's hard for a lot of us who are conditioned all of our lives with "societal" standards and such to really understand Juggalo society. Just because at face value, these people seem to be everything opposite of what we learn, we are quick to judge them.
The reality is that that majority of them hold values that we should all strive to hold. And if people don't really want to pay attention to the video to understand what those values are, then that's too bad.
I haven't really listened to ICP since I was in high school, so I wouldn't classify myself as a Juggalo. But damn would I love to live my life like a Juggalo at The Gathering of the Juggalos. To really feel as though I fit in, and that everyone around me accepts me. To feel content with where my life is at - enough that I can actually enjoy my hours of consciousness. I don't need to be a Juggalo to have those things, but they exemplify what it is to have an excellent life. I'm a little envious.
Never heard of this before, pretty interesting. I dont see why everybody has to hate on people who like to enjoy their lives. They might not be the smartest bunch, but at least they have found a way to be happy.
People who get together one weekend a year to forget their problems, enjoy life and not be judged by anybody for any reason? Sounds pretty awesome to me.
I've got nothing against gatherings, or their concerts, but their (I.C.P.) fans are almost always dumb individuals who don't realize that snorting coke and doing acid while talking shit to everyone they come in contact with isn't something that people appreciate.
Coming from a small town FULL of juggalos, I have no respect for the majority of them, although there have been a few individuals who are actually pretty nice (that being at most a tenth of the population). They show no respect to anyone, and obviously don't respect themselves if they do such stupid stuff all the time, and then whine and complain about people who judge them. Of course we're going to judge you if you're dumb enough to do such stupid things and then brag about them.
I have yet to see a juggalo on campus, and I'm quite happy about that.
I will admit though, when I heard that Tila Tequila got hit in the face with a brick, I did smile.
The way they describe being a juggalo sounds great and the fact that they're all about family is awesome, can't hold that against them at all but the way they (generally) go about it is what I don't agree with. My best friend is a bit of a juggalo but you'd hardly notice it. Still reps the tattoo and has a few juggalo friends but it seems he's kept all the good and none of the bad from it. The majority of juggalos I've met are disrespectful, always talking shit and wanting to fight people for no reason, usually dumb as hell and high at all times. That and all the gross girls showing their tits at their gathering and the pregnant girl smoking (and probably drunk) is a good comparison to most of the juggalos I've met in real life.

This is exactly what I was trying to say, just couldn't word it right when I tried. That's my exact opinion of juggalos, and always will be.

I'm not American but is there anything equivalent to this in Canada? cause I don't believe I ever came across anything like a Juggalo or anything similar.
it's stupid to think that a weekend in the woods means that everyone there is stupid.
just have to say, the magnet thing, for real, science DOES NOT know how magnets actually work, as much as they know how they can use them. they DO NOT know how it is caused. there are agreed upon definitions, but they vary. (sorry, wikipedia for convenience)
you don't have to understand them to appreciate the music. twiztid, tech n9ne, kottonmouth kings, hed-(p.e)., are all good friends and usually at that weekend long festival of them renting, oh i don't know, an ISLAND to invite ANYONE for a huge party.

you know that show Trailer Park Boys? Yeah, it's pretty much just like that.
After watching that interview, my respect actually went down... I feel like its irresponsible to say things to people like: go smoke stuff, simply because you expect that person to know better... especially when people try to emulate you.
We've come across this debate within the starcraft 2 community itself, are we, as representatives of starcraft and Esports responsible for setting good examples for the community, or should we be free to be as vulgar for vulgarities sake, and ignore consequences that don't directly affect us.
There were a few kids that were into this sort of thing at my high school several years ago. I never thought much of it, but apparently the FBI is starting to take it more seriously.
The Juggalos are highlighted in the bureau's 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment report as a "non-traditional gangs" alongside the traditional ethnic-based Asian, East African and Caribbean gangs; the report classifies Juggalos among "hybrid gangs" such as the Latin Kings. According to information from the National Gang Intelligence Center cited in the report, the Juggalos "are rapidly expanding into many U.S. communities" and "engage in criminal activity and violence." Law enforcement officials in at least 21 states "have identified criminal Juggalo sub-sets," according to the NGIC.
