I am utterly amazed that this kind of cheating could happen in a modern country like USA.

I am utterly amazed that this kind of cheating could happen in a modern country like USA. I'm actually quite surprised that more people aren't aware of this stuff. It's been disturbingly obvious to me since high school that this country is not the amazing "city on the hill" that they try to brainwash American students into thinking here in the States. We have incredibly glaring problems and quite honestly as an adult about to exit the student world and enter the "real world" (as many would say), I can think of very, very few reasons as to why it would be a better idea to stay in the States over leaving for Europe or Canada at this point. This country is just completely backwards in so many respects that it's mind-boggling. I mean I'm all for fighting to make this country better - I'm as patriotic as the next guy. I love my home. But I'm telling you, if someone like Santorum gets elected by this country, I'm just going to lose all hope.

Agreed. But what´s really disturbing is that you don´t really hear about these things on a regular basis - that´s what a mature people in a democracy does. It just shows again that democracy needs to be fought for on a daily basis and is NOT something that is inherently American(though you basically have a stable democracy, just corrupt and flawed like the rest of the western world countries and probably all the countries all over the world. Some more corrupt as others.) Things like this will be the nails in the coffin for the GOP in this election cycle. Saddening to be honest, since Obama will have an easy time claiming his second presidency this way. Competition of ideas would not hurt, and good ideas are what America needs right now, since Obama is far from perfect in providing them, let alone fight for his own and lead into a direction or another decisively - quite the contrary since some want to brand him as the "most radical president".

Why the fuck are people having cow about this? All that he's suggesting is that people be abstinent. Big deal. I wasn't going to comment on this contraceptive issue because it's so stupid, but the ignorance on the subject is too much to ignore. Here are the two fundamental points: 1. Neither Rick Santorum nor anyone else can Constitutionally ban birth control. The Supreme Court case of Griswold v. Connecticut conclusively decided this issue in the 1960s. The "right to privacy" that was created in that case is so pervasively integrated into American jurisprudence now that the case will never be overturned, even if it was decided wrongly (which as a matter of Constitutional law, I believe it was, notwithstanding that the sought-after policy was correct). Accordingly, all of this talk about banning contraception is nothing short of blatant and unapologetic fear-mongering by democrats and the left. It's really that simple. 2. Rick Santorum has not said that he'd ban contraceptives. Go do some research on what he's actually he said. He has said that he doesn't like contraceptives. He has said that they're harmful. He has said that Griswold was decided wrongly. He has said that states should be able to pass laws governing contraceptives or even banning them as a matter of states rights. But, as far as I know and can tell, I haven't seen one quote where he has said that he'd ban them. I have seen quotes where he said that he would not impose his views of contraceptives on others.

They kinda gambled themselves into a corner with the whole obstructionist thing in Congress. By this point, it's become pretty obvious Congress is the dysfunctional part, especially the House, which is being run by Republicans. They can't even get half of their party to get in line for their own important legislation. It's even worse than when Dems had a super majority in the Senate. At least they could get things besides healthcare passed.

The Maine Republican Party, under fire from Ron Paul supporters for its mishandling of the state’s recent caucuses, is now re-canvassing counties and municipalities to recount vote totals. POLITICO obtained an email from the State Republican Party asking local chairmen to send them the vote totals from their local straw polls. “County Chairman & Town Chairman,” an email written by a state Republican Party staffer reads. “We are reconfirming the totals from the Presidential Preference Straw poll. Can you please EMAIL ME the totals from your towns. For County Chairman if you are emailing the total for your entire county can you please list the towns that are included.” The letter was forwarded by a longtime Republican activist in Maine. The Maine Republican Party and its chairman, Charlie Webster, have been under attack in the last week for declaring Mitt Romney of the presidential straw poll in Maine when not all of the state’s caucuses have met to vote yet. On Saturday, Webster announced that Romney had won the presidential straw poll. Romney won the non-binding caucuses by just three points, 39 percent to Ron Paul’s 36 percent. Less than 200 votes separated the totals of Romney and second-place finisher Ron Paul. Several localities were not included in the presidential straw poll, including Washington County, where the caucuses were cancelled for the reason of inclement weather. Others municipalities had local caucuses scheduled for after Webster’s announcement. Washington County is expected to caucus this coming Saturday. Source

At the very least, he would guarantee the government was completely out of contrceptives. Funding, mandates, recommendations, everything. Correct. Generally speaking, the federal government has no business mandating to anyone that they be required to provide goods or services to a third person (this is one of the primary reasons why people oppose the anti-discrimination laws, but that's another story). Think about it this way. Guns are far more expensive than contraceptives. Should the federal government be required to purchase (or compel others to purchase) firearms for anyone who wants to exercise his Second Amendment rights? Obviously the answer is no. Freedom is about having the ability to do something, not having someone else pay for you to do something.
