The Great Scam - Eve Online This link is really really long (over 15k word read) but WOW what a good read it is. Its basically one guys journey in the massively multiplayer Eve, where he starts out making an honest living in a corporate filled world. Eventually lies and deciet take their roots in his experiance and he pulls one of the biggest scams (to my knowledge) ever in a game. I just spent the last two hours reading it myself since its quite an addictive style that he uses, and I'm pretty awestruck with how it all goes.
But anyhow what are other scams or just screwed up things that people have done in MMO's?
I actually meant to post this in the sports and games if somone wants to move it
For anyone too lazy to finish the story, like me, it sounds like basically he scammed some people out of some fake online game money by creating multiple accounts and having conversations with himself to boost popularity, and ultimately in the end couldnt live with his treachery and ended up giving away his earnings to a random player to make up for it.
haha, I'm reading this..I think I might just end up reading all of it right now. Some of the lines so far are fucking hilarious. I can fully understand where he's coming from, from playing other games kinda like it too.
It was a nice read, although I feel sorry for hardhead. I think I would have given it to him. It's really interesting, because these damn mmo games can take up a large part of your life and shit..and then to be screwed out of everything you've worked for, it would just suck so bad.
For a lot of people, they are their lives.. I bet there's thousands of people that play evercrack with their spare time, every day, and every night. I'd probably be one of them if I wasn't such a cheap skate and unwilling to pay any money per month

Yeah, I don't know why he scammed hardhead. Feel sorry for the guy.
Sorry but i cant even appreciate this scam based on merit. The greatest scam of all would to have been to simply develope a hack/bot to accumulate the funds for them. It's all about effeciency, this scam wreaks of effort.

Right, because you're busying yourself with winning football games and banging the head cheerleader right? Don't be such a pretentious prick.
As for the story, it's very well written and I enjoyed every word. Now my eyes bleed from staring at the screen so long. 0_o It's crazy how close that story is to my exploits in Diablo 2.
You need to read it word for word to truely appreciate his changing mood and final revalation. Sweet.
they should have wired all the funds to one of their fake investor accounts, the fake account would then be able to vent fake anger with all the other real investors, o man the irony.. and then the fake account would also be able to spring board off that false sense of comraderie all the screwed-over-investors have together hahaha.. Thoggins is a savage
i havent even read the actual story yet since i caught the "spoiler" in someones post, so i cant honestly compare but we used to scam people so much on ultima online like 5 years ago...i used to run that game.
Was thinking about it and I came to realize this wasn't the biggest scam I have heard about. My friend's friend played Ultima Online (sp?). His character was a theif of sorts. So one day he did something (can't remember what) and he stole someone's special item. He later sold that item on ebay for $500. The very next day a new patch came out that eliminated his chances of doing the same thing again.
And it would be funny if the guy who he gave the money to was just some newbie who got bored of the game after a week and never logs on anymore. The things people will do for money.
That story is crazy shit, one of the best scams I've ever seen pulled off in a game. I used to scam people all the time on Ultima Online, good times...good times.
He has a good writing style, I like his inclusion of many analogies that help his descriptions.
"mining in Eve Online is about as fun as fucking a fat chick's festering corpse."
Or:
"In Eve Online, your lifepod is the final string in the cold vacuum of space which keeps you in the world of the living. Unfortunately, it’s about as strong as an anorexic midget in a world of steroid-laced giants."
This was such a cool thing to do, although the ending was the hugest anti-climax of all. I mean what ever became of Frostt? Did he know the amount of money he now had was the biggest he was ever likely to get? Did he just play for a while then log out forever?
that was a very good read, funny, nice story line. it kept me very interested the whole time. i felt very sorry for hardhead. would be awsome if it was really a true story.
it was also very funny, i laughed out loud a lot and everyone kept asking what i was laughing at wile i was reading.
go read it now if you havent, you will be impressed.
After wasting about fifteen minutes of my time reading that story, which was pretty interesting to say the least, those people are:
FUCKING GEEKS ofmasdkfjsdogjas;jk lololol.
Man, hilarious story. It's a little ironic how the narrator calls "Thoggins" the "fat slob without a girlfriend," while he creates this huge elaborate scheme of deception in order to receive millions in virtual currency, lolol. Oh man, priceless.
There's this kid who I work with that always talks about this game Eve and at work, in his free time, he logs onto the forums constantly and is giggling in his little cubicle like a maniacal little imp, murmuring things like, "OMG DESE NUBS SUX," while nursing his .jpg collection of ships.
it's not sad, after all the difference betweed real life and an mmorpg isnt that big, only some rules differ and mmog's aren't as complicated as real life. after all, we don't even know what "the real world" actually is.
The fact that he scammed them for in-game cash... makes the whole scam seem pretty weak. I mean he got nothing out of it... Wasted all that time and effort posting/chatting and then he ends up giving the dough to some new player... He should've sold the online cash for USD, and buy himself a nice new computer chair to sit his fat mmorpg-playing ass on...
I feel sorta bad for those people especially this Hardhead guy and lol at author btw - calling someone and ubernerd whilst getting up at fucking 6:00 just to make some money in a game is just plain pathetic

It's hillarious when he threatens to kill thoggins. And then envisions him being shot by cops. After giving him the phone number to a god damn library (called from there too). H i l l a r i o u s.
