Okay. I\'m taking the SSAT\'s ( Secondary School Admissions Test) tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone had any tips on the test, particularly, the verbal + reading comp section.
btw for people who dont know, this test is an admissions for high school. Maybe some people took it before when they were in middle school?

Why do you have to take a test for High School? Is it private school, or something else?

Oh, and for advice; just sleep. I took the PSAT (Practice SAT) and sleep helped a lot.

Get lots of sleep, eat a good breakfast, and RELAX. People get so worked up over this shit that their scores fluxate wildly depending on their stress level. Before the test, do something to relax and remind yourself that, no matter ones test score, we all die anyway.

when i did this the first time i was still drunk from partying the night before.. and nearly aced it. then i did it again for fun a year after and I got a worse result eventhough i slept well and ate a steady breakfast..

so my advice would be to go out and find a good party with easy women. but then again this way might only work for me

Because there are specialized high schools for those that score high enough on the test.

I took the SAT and with 9 hours of sleep I almost got perfect score in the math section (780ish / 800) but did miserably in the verbal section (500ish /800)

The trick to any big test (whether it's an SAT or a final) is to not do anything out of the ordinary that you wouldn't do normally. If you don't eat breakfast, don't eat it the morning of the exam. If you don't sleep 10-12 hours a night, don't sleep it the night before. I'd definitely try and extend your normal sleeping habits by an hour or two but don't overdo it.

You want to go in there feeling relaxed and if you are over preparing for the test by changing your regular routine, you are going to be thinking about it too much before it actually happens.

The last thing to remember is that you can take it multiple times. If you do poorly on the first one, pay for a course that helps improve your score and then take it again.

I took the PSATs this yr. as a sophmore... they really weren't so hard. Sleep is overrated lol, I got about 3 hours of sleep the night before, playin video games, just messing around, and I skipped breakfast because I woke up kinda late :-/. I ended up getting a 206 or something, which is like 9 pts below National Merit :-p. Standardized tests are really messed up... I scored about 20 points higher than some kids who have better grades then me :-/.

Anyways, just relax and do whatever you do, stress will really kill your score. If you really want to do well, just take the test like it is, and if you do badly, then practice for the next few months and take it again. You can't cram for these tests.

There's really nothing you can do to prepare at this point...I had to take an entrance exam for high school as well... The verbal is a lot of your vocabulary, so either you have an expansive one or you don't... reading comprehension pretty much says it all.

Just relax, and take your time.... don't stress if you don't know a word... guess and move on

get SLEEP

unless of course you havent studied
if you have, sleep will prevent silly mistakes

i remember the time i took my SAT II biology, I procrastinated. I don't usually study, and when I do, I dont usually study for more than an hour or two. I studied 12 hours straight before the test from 2:30PM to 2:30AM, and woke up alittle before 8AM(??) for the test. Luckily, I chose the to take the test at my shitty zoned school so I wouldnt have to wake up extra early for a commute.

I probably made a couple silly mistakes, but I would have done terrible without the study marathon. Got a 760

The SSAT's are so f'ckin easy. Most people do not know about this test, but it is a test given to all pre high school students. The ones that do well get into the top NYC high schools.

I hope you've taken some practice SSAT's. Other than that there is nothing you could've done. Get some sleep and read the questions carefully. I go to HCHS and since its > Stuy I just took it to see what I'd get. I didn't study at all for it, but most people seem to need to... anyway good luck. (Yes I did get into Stuy)

Yeah, basically you should start studying a few months before the test, maybe as much as a year if you're really crazy about it . There isn't much you can do at the last second unless you have a photographic memory or something like that.

The vocab needs to be built up over a long period of time by either reading, or by studying roots of words, and well... math, I don't know how you study for that, other than just work lots of problems. The math on these standardized tests are so easy that it should be a crime to miss more than 1 or 2 questions...

Did you know that at the University of Michigan getting a perfect score on your SATs is worth 5 entrance points, but being a minority is worth 20? So being a minority is more important than being smart. Four times as important...

University of Michigan scrapped their whole admissions system because courts deemed it non sensical or something to that effect. I remember a site with their entrance "calculator." It's pretty funny if you think about it.

I've got to say not doing anything out of the normal is best. Before finals or something I often try reading some test guide on the internet or in a random book. They give wild claims about how sleeping 9+ hours can account for 15% of your score, and to eat a good breakfast, not to study the day before, to relax, etc. I find it doesn't help.

For big tests just study like crazy the day before, and the morning before. When you get the test all the nervousness, even if you're going to do bad, disappears, if you remember this you get less nervous before.

I like to do some repetitive motion before/during a test though to relax. Gum, bobbing my head, or tapping my foot works nicely. Plus it's really annoying and detrimential to everyone elses concentration, gogoogo curve fighting!

Just for that, I'm going to track you over the internet, find out where and when the biggest test you'll ever take is, stand on your desk, and tap my foot repeatedly.

don't eat before the test
bring bread and water or something else small like crackers with you when you are taking the test

if, for example, you eat breakfast at 9 am and the test is at 10 am you will be sleepy and it'll be harder to focus because of digestion process going on in your stomach

I never really checked, but these are set on a curve? So some times the curve may be higher, while some times lower? .
