I'm afraid sightings of some lights and a calendar ending is not enough to make me seriously consider that almost everything I think I know about the world is wrong.
That is, no more than I usually consider it.

Haha - so if you point him to a prophecy that comes true he will convert to your religion. Good grief...

No but if you show him undeniable proof of a religion he most likely would.

No man I actually watched the vid and he said if you point out something in a holy text that predicts a certain disaster on a certain day, he will become a believer in that religion - without the need for any corroborating criteria even. That's assinine.

Ah yeah you're right, I didn't watch that vid and just assumed, which makes me an ass. That is indeed dumb.

I've been a believer since I was really little, although I wouldn't admit it because I was scared out of my wits (as in I would need people to stay with me until I fell asleep). Some of the sightings in the video are of things that have been identified, namely the recent sighting over New York which was verified to have been a clump of reflective balloons, and the hubble telescope picture which is of a rare collision of two comets. Some other others could certainly be hoaxes or photoshops/film edits, but we're getting more and more that cannot be easily explained away. I would be much more of a skeptic if I hadn't seen one of the ones from the video in real life, except in a different place. While driving from Lancaster PA to Mechanicsburg PA, I saw claer as day the formation of three lights in a triangle. It was enormous and it was moving. It was close to an airport, but it clearly wasn't an airplane. Military, maybe, I just don't know. I have a feeling we'll be finding out the truth quite soon, though.
If all you're offering is Dos Equis, I will stay thirsty thank you very much.

If the masses had any idea of how easy it is to photoshop a picture or use match-moving software to add an UFO on a video. Then 90% of these alien videos wouldn't even exist.

I'm a complete newbie and I still can do better than any of the shots in the video of the OP. Just google "match moving" with whatever 3d software and you'll find dozens of tutorials on youtube explaining how to add UFOs to any videos in just a few minutes.

You don't need to overthink the explanation of it. If it's a weird cloud formation or lens effect. 99% of them have a much simpler explanation, just video editing made by a random amateur.
Great people talk about ideas. Average people talk about things. Small people talk about other people.

All of the videos (even the ones of the same thing from separate angles) could easily be faked. Some people get way too convinced wayyyy too easily. I don't deny aliens exist, I actually think it doesn't make much sense to say we're the only intelligent life in the universe once you realize just how big the universe is. Still though, I can't imagine how a couple videos can completely convince some people. Must be strange going through life being that gullible.

And about the Mayan calendar!

"Believing" in aliens doesn't mean that aliens actually came to our planet.
I believe that there should be intelligent life somewhere out there, considering how UNBELIEVABLY huge universe is (seriously, people can't exactly grasp it).

Claiming that aliens are actually in contact with us is completely different deal

Actually there has been some excellent statistical work done on the chances that there is life on another planet (intelligent life).

It's actually pretty small of a chance.

Think of the entire universe as a black square, and time is represented by time looking at the black square. In terms of the life of the universe, the duration of life on earth has been rediculously small. So picture, if you will, as from the start of life on earth to the end of life on earth as a small white dot on teh square that flashes on, then off once life is gone.

Now imagine if we scaled the lifetime of the universe to 24 hours of viewtime on the square. We would see many flashes flashing like crazy. And (i forget his name... gah...) some statiscal scientist came to a ballpark figure that the chances of 2 flashes occuring at once AND those lifeforms both being able to travel space AND be close enough to meet... is less than 1 millionth of a percent chance.

Bummer eh?

And that's taking into account that the universe is (basically, as far as we'll probably ever know) infinite? 'cause 1millionth of a percent. There's more planets than that in the universe - no?

Again, that probability is the probability that is A) has to happen, and B) smart and close enough to actually visit and meet. (which is the circumstances that would have to exist in order to see UFO's and for them to be real)

What did I say? I just said he does believe too, so it's not totally unreasonable to think they exist
I asked my friend how the ratio at a party was, he replied. "Let's just say for every guy there was two dudes."

You will get nay-sayers

we will all believe.

I think its really soon.
ive had this feeling since i was a kid
and it only has been growing stronger in the past 20 years.
Am i crazy? possibly
but theres just something thats telling me something big
soon.

Ok...but no one in here is saying they don't. That's not the topic of discussion atm.

The fact that believers exist show how science education has failed in today's world. The fact that people can assign equal weights to "aliens" and to other explanations like refraction or meteors in their belief system is absolutely astonishing.

As a basic analogy for how you should think of the world:
Right now, I don't know how much money is in my wallet. It could be anything, $100, $5, $1. Knowing that I am a starving college student, certain things are more likely than others. I can't entirely eliminate the possibility that I have $100 in my wallet, or $99, or $98, and so on. (I know I have no coins). So essentially, there are 101 possible amounts of money for me to have, every discrete integer from $0 to $100 inclusive. Just because I have no evidence, does NOT at all mean that there is a 1% chance of $1, 1% for $2, and 1% for $100. It is FAR more likely that I have a small amount of cash. Probably something like 50% $0, 49% $1, and a fraction of a percent for other outcomes. There are other factors that come into probability even if you dont know what they are.

Similarly, there is a light in the sky. It could certainly be aliens, I concede that fact. It could also have 99 possible terrestrial explanations. Just because its possible that its aliens ($100) does not make it likely.

Not knowing how much money I have, I would not act as if I had $100 to spend. Similarly, not knowing what the light in the sky was, I will not act as if its aliens.

I'd like some sources for everyone claiming all or most of these have been debunked or proven false/hoaxes.

Thanks.

Just because you can't disprove something doesnt make it true.

For example:

I'm sitting on an elephant in the zoo posting on TL using their WIFI. Prove me wrong. Oh you cant? Well I guess we have to believe that zoos really are letting people use elephants for chairs.

The objective, scientific odds that an alien has visited us is so astronomically high that it's probably more likely that my story is true. I'm sure you've seen much more evidence for WIFI at zoos, and elephants existing, than you have for aliens. And if you believe in aliens, you might as well believe that I have Elephant Sue under my butt, sniffing my laptop

One would wonder why scientifically superior intergalactic travelers would feel the need to randomly fly about like that for no apparent reason.

Has anyone read about the very recently declassified files released by the FBI about UFOs abducting, mutilating cows and horses before dropping them back on earth? Pretty funny, especially from a source like the FBI
