lol by standard mathematical rules the answer would be 288. However stupid people might not know this and assume 48/ (2((9+3) = 2. However this is wrong since multiplication and division are to be done in order unless changed by brackets.

haha for some reason I ended up with "48 / (2/12)" , which somehow also became 288, no idea how that came about since that's not the actual problem... cool tho, guess I better get more of this from my grower :D

48/(2/12) = (48*12)/2

how can someone get to 2? you just read it from left to the right...

the only way to get 2 as the answer is if it had another parenthesis like that:
48÷(2(9+3))

Luckily, I view division as multiplication of the reciprocal.

To avoid any future division-related order of operation problems:

48 / 2 * (9 + 3)
48 * (1/2) * (12)
Hey look they're all being multiplied so order of operations is now solved. Since multiplication of factors is commutative, we can multiply in any order we want now. You can choose between:
48 * 6
24 * 12
576 * (1/2)

Personally for me 24 * 12 is the easiest there, but yes. Nice find.

This one is interesting. Wolfram alpha interprets it as 1/(2*x), binding the omitted multiplication sign stronger to the variable x. But if you insist on left-to-right evaluation you get (1/2)*x.

This is a mathematical expression that severs no purpose other than to test if you truly understand how order of operations work. Technically the answer is 288, but practically if you see this written 'in the field' "48/2(9+3)" odds are pretty good that they meant "48 / [2(9+3)]."

This thread/poll serves little purpose other than to punish people who either A) don't remember their math or B) allow their experience with math rather than Pemdas lesson in primary/secondary school to dictate how they do math. It also is a place for people to go "haha look at that thread" :-/

I hate ambiguous mathematical expressions (whether it be because of technical ambiguity or laziness on the part of the person who wrote it) and hate this thread.

I'm closing this dumb poll thread. If anyone still does not understand it you can pm me. If anyone uses this as an excuse to troll me I'll just revoke your pm privileges lol

Chill Edit: Reopened. I don't see why you would close it, it's an interesting trick

micronesia....you cant just go and randomly create brackets when that completely changes the given problem. There is nothing ambiguous about it. I am worried about our public education system now ^^

How did this thread get reopened again? I thought micronesia's post summed it up perfectly.

Also, the "What is your education and what is you result?" poll really should have options for, "I didn't vote because I thought it was ambiguous".

Chill and I agreed to re-open it but we are changing the focus a bit... why is it that some people pick 2 and other people pick 288? It's not as simple as 'people who remember their math' and 'those who don't'

Umm...seeing that hurts my head. I would start looking for where that equation came from if I ever saw that in real life.

he's right

the question in OP is technically 288, but technicalities are irrelevant
what's 1/2x to you?
if you say 288, you should also say 1/2x = x/2
and technically, yes, it's x/2
but really, it's 1/(2x) in real world

that said, i'm sad that 2 is such a popular answer. people should be aware of tricks and make no assumptions and vote 288 ;(

edit: lol sniped by micronesia

Chill, can you add my poll to the OP so it gets a better data basis?

You just had to re-open this thread. Didn't you? EDIT: It was Chill and micro.

I think for now on, all contests that require you to do a skill testing question in order to win should use this question (not like they don't anyway!). Ha.

This and a million times over. To me, it's a simple math problem. You cannot just go on and create brackets because as Golgotha pointed out. It changes everything.

if you write it out or stop and think you get 288

The answer is 2.

The rule is not PEMDAS, it is
P
E
MD
AS

in other words: multiplication does not have priority over division. Rather, they have the same priority. Therefore if there is only multiplication and division remaining in the problem, the operation that is furthest to the LEFT is done first (left to right). So the answer is 2.
