To avoid any future division-related order of operation problems: 48 / 2 * (9 + 3) 48 * (1/2) * (12) Hey look they're all being multiplied so order of operations is now solved. Since multiplication of factors is commutative, we can multiply in any order we want now. You can choose between: 48 * 6 24 * 12 576 * (1/2) Personally for me 24 * 12 is the easiest there, but yes. Nice find. | ||

I am worried about our public education system now ^^ he's right the question in OP is technically 288, but technicalities are irrelevant what's 1/2x to you? if you say 288, you should also say 1/2x = x/2 and technically, yes, it's x/2 but really, it's 1/(2x) in real world that said, i'm sad that 2 is such a popular answer. people should be aware of tricks and make no assumptions and vote 288 ;( edit: lol sniped by micronesia | ||

The rule is not PEMDAS, it is P E MD AS in other words: multiplication does not have priority over division. Rather, they have the same priority. Therefore if there is only multiplication and division remaining in the problem, the operation that is furthest to the LEFT is done first (left to right). So the answer is 2. | ||
