"You can have the sense of touch like poking a rubber ball or stretching a sticky rice cake" when manipulating images"
What? Do they mean you can actually "feel" the sensation of touch as the nerves in your fingertips interact with the images or do they mean that it looks and seems so real, considering the accurate reactions of touching the images, that it seems like you can actually feel something?
I highly doubt it's the former, but the article should have clarified better. Sounds like Microsoft's Kinect mixed in with a 3D TV.

Brace for those Star Trek "Holodecks"?
This is freaking awesome. It does say "You can have the sense of touch like poking a rubber ball or stretching a sticky rice cake" so it may actually be the sense of touch on the users side.

This will bring joy to otaku. Especially those who love eroge games.

Lol ero games.

ha ha yes, my friend bought a 3d TV yesterday and i just told him the news... he wasn't very happy to say the least :p

I have actually used similar systems using haptic interfaces when I took a course in multimodal interfaces. One system was a simulator used to train surgeons doing laparoscopy. You got your visual input from a screen showing what the cameras would have shown in a real situation and did the surgery with tools connected to a machine giving you haptic feedback and giving you the ability to feel how it feels to touch someones guts.

The japanese would be the first to think about this...
Japan- the worldwide leader in 3d pornography
|
If they actually created something like this, I would buy it the day it comes out, regardless of cost or demand. Assuming it works, of course.

Japan making yet another step into locking down geeks inside their houses
|
i can see that porn is going 4d lol
|
This is what happens when HK decides to compete with Japan in the porn industry, they just get outdone 100x
|
I think its no coincidence that first two touch they mention feels like a
"Soft rubber ball" "Sticky ricecake"
lol I'm still at work and bored to death. And I can't get my mind off the gutter at this topic.
|
Ah those crafty japanese...
|
This sounds awesome, The 3D out now is kinda lame. i tried it a 3D tv at best buy and i was not impressed.

Japan, always putting so much sweat and hard work into technology. To provide us with better porn.

Well, the plural form of the original word is the same as the singular (since Japanese doesn't normally distinguish singular and plural). I see no problem with this.

this sounds so promising.

Kinda disappointed that they don't explain further how it works. Nonetheless it is going to be a very long time before stuff like this hits the market for consumer use, right now it just isn't practical albeit very entertaining.

That's hella legit. Boggles my mind how this would work.

I like touching art. Haha, last year I was checking out the Toronto Museum of Arts and Stuff and I was putting my fingers close to all the paintings to kinda inspect them, and then these big bodyguards came by and were like "hey you! don't be touching our paintings, they be worth more than I make in a millenias". And then I wanted to tell them that I was just looking but was afraid they'd beat me with a stick. the ones shaped like this |-
Then later I actually did touch one of the artworks, it was an abstract black sculpture, and the guard caught me. I was so sad that I got caught. The guard could be like "haha! I caught a guy touching the art! See guys, I'm not useless".
Whenever I try to visualize something I often use my hands to try to shape it. So being able to touch art would be awesome.

This looks a lot like the "photoelasticity" research they were doing at the university where I studied in Tokyo..
http://www.vogue.is.uec.ac.jp/PET/
Video there shows how this tech probably works if it's not the exact same research group
And yeah, the first time I saw this I immediately thought of Japan's obsession with dating simulators like Love Plus+
|
...xD It's really funny coincidence this technology is from Japan; gives additional element of potential hilarity to otherwise significant advance in TV technology.
|
Just imagine how it could become in the future... :p no more rapes just someone with wild minds getting satisfied once and for all and everyone is happy ~ oh god. I'm thinking too much T_T
|
Or kill a person without actually killing it. The world would become better, but with many hidden bad thoughts. Take it leave it ? T_T

So basically this is almost every Otaku's dream come true. After this I predict the entire Japanese society going downhill

I gotta get one of these sets when they become commercially available :3
TvZ, the next great MMO. You can even feel the zergling blood!

I don't think their society needs the help. Their economy has been slowly deflating for over 20 years.

Must agree with you there.

Screw the otakus, I'M screaming in joy. I hope this means I can have proper swordfights in my living room. Like an integrated first person version of Soul Calibur, where you could duke it out with Ivy or Taki or Sophitia and then when you've won you can moles... Heeey how'd I end up down here?

because in japanese you add "s" to pluralize words, right?

Sweet virgin mary on a stick, this is too good to be true... The future is upon us, and all I have to say is "Make it so, number one."
Also it's quite clear from reading how they worded it that you actually can't feel the images, but you can manipulate them. Perhaps it's possible to fool your brain though, I really don't know.

If you can only manipulate the images but not feel them, how is that any news? We can already manipulate images, the only difference would be the interface is gestures instead of a mouse and keyboard.
But the article is so vague that you can't really say for sure. It's possible there's actually no news and they're just making it sound new and awesome when it actually isn't. So either the article is misleading or it is too light on actually reporting stuff.

the article itself is pretty vague but the source is reliable. Physorg is a very good and reliable website

no tactile feedback = no touch sensation = bullshit.
This is just interacting by hand waving gestures in the air. Perhaps in a really good resolution.
It would be interesting to find out how the setup is. If users have to have a static predefined point of view for the illusion to work and how much gear would possibly be in the way.

Yeah but what about this statement,
This technology could create a virtual museum where visitors, including vision-impaired people, can put their hands on valuable sculptures that are usually untouchable 1. Why would I want to touch a sculpture if I couldn't actually feel it? 2. And why would a freakin' blind person want to touch it if he can't feel it!?
This article is annoying me.

Now that's a VERY good question. If anyone can fill us in on this when they release more information, that would be fantastic.
