The amount of hysteria from republicans (canada dude apologized and stuff so unfair to put him in the same booth as those who vote on either jailing or shooting him/the sources) is actually worse than I thought possible.

right wing talk show host Todd Schnitt is offering a $50,000 reward for the capture of Assange

"Assange is a terrorist, an enemy combatant, and needs to be treated as such," says Schnitt on his website.

I find it amusing that americans suggest a person should respect the legal system of different country. I have to save some quotes for use in future argument.

You make me fucking sick

It makes me fucking sick that someone can have so little regard for the law, when it is the law that lets you sit comfortably in front of your computer, insulting other people over the internet.

Straight up fuck the law. If everyone was a chill, good person we wouldnt need any laws. But since there are so many horrible people we kinda need them..

Uh...no. Even if everyone were perfect we'd still find laws useful.

Also...Silvio...nooooooooo...

I just heard on local TV that Assange is on the UK right now. The UK police knows exactly where he is at and even knows his phone number. And are being pressured to arrest him. But they are avoiding doing that so far.

How much of that is true?

All of it? The UK knows where he is and because of extradition treaties there's pressure for them to honor Sweden's warrant.

The warrant was improperly done though and given the likely scrutiny on extradition they decided to wait for it to be properly filled out.

What's so surprising about that? He's not saying anything the Homeland Security Committee hasn't already said.

Hey guys, there's a wikileaks competitor in the works already:

A group of former members of WikiLeaks is planning to launch its own whistleblowing platform in mid-December, according to a German newspaper. The activists criticize WikiLeaks for concentrating too much on the US and want to take a broader approach

http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,732212,00.html

Which was what many had predicted when wikileaks first showed up. That it would be just the first of it's kind. Many other wikileaks like website are gonna show up sooner or later.

There will come a time where admitting that there's widespread corruption in the government is a partisan political issue. That realizing that the actual reasons for why we're well and truly fucked is up for debate and not acted upon.

Goddamnit we live in a pre-Orwellian society. And most people aren't even willing to admit that.

Some really good details about the burn on Asange in the above link. I doubt that the allegations of rape are true.

The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know.

And yet JFK signed off on the Bay of Pigs....

Politicians having great speech writers is nothing new. Having ones that follow through on their words with actions is something else

Leaking diplomatic letters aren't good. That's bad, no matter how you try to cut it. Revealing crimes (of war) is a great thing, but a parallel to leaking diplomatic letters would be if everyones medical journals were made public... Stop praising this man, he has done the world a great deal of harm and he should NOT be rewarded for it.

...Kennedy commented to his journalist friend Ben Bradlee, "The first advice I'm going to give my successor is to watch the generals and to avoid feeling that because they were military men their opinions on military matters were worth a damn.

This was in private confidence. Note that Kennedy was assassinated.

The President is only the public head of the bureaucracy of state. While he holds a considerable amount of power in the grand scheme of things, we can't hold him entirely accountable behind every single action the U.S. government commits. (Not that he is not responsible for those actions nonetheless, but responsibility and culpability are different things).

The only award he's been given so far is bogus rape charges. More places like wikileaks are starting to pop up on the web. It's too soon to hope for it but we my be seeing an end to governmental invulnerability and double-dealing (this would be a very good thing). So I'll continue to praise the website. the actions of it's members are nothing short of heroic. This is our generation's Pentagon Papers.

If you think leaking diplomatic cables is just bad, are you OK with the following?

- US bombing Iran at the request of Saudi Arabia
- Taking Gitmo prisoners into your country in order to get an audiance with the US president.
- Russian government being in bed with organized crime.
- China taking both sides in the NK issue.

I think I can sum up my general position by using Louis Brandeis's words, a man I greatly respect, "Sunlight is the greatest disinfectant."

You realize he is a tool of the aliens.

They need to release these leaks every so often to throw us off the track (just like their genetically engineered experiment in Mono lake).
