manitou, that syntax makes me want to update to python 3.5...

anyways I just avoid using nested dicts. but if I did, I would be using defaultdicts

If you care about speed, don't use Python is what I'd advise you. C and C++ could give you speed.

well I think C is pretty awful unless you are a god and you know specifically what you are making, so you won't need to debug. but yeah, typically hard to beat C for speed.

I don't program in C++ because I never learned but I've seen lots of benchmarking and I think for some applications, python can hang with C/C++ when used knowledgeably. You probably won't ever see it in win speed, but some things will only be like a 10% time loss instead of like a 1500% time loss. There are lots of ways to speed up python programs, though admittedly you lose some of python's elegance by using some of those tools.

I spend most of my free time coding up new algorithm ideas, and python saves me so much time because it's such an effective language. That said if i come up with something really good, and I want to benchmark what the algorithm is capable of, I'd probably code it in C or hand it off to someone who was good at C to do. How does C++ compare to C these days?

Some things are slightly faster in C, but C++ is a superset, so it doesn't matter too much. You can still use pure C if performance there is the best.

Python is slow, more or less by design. That's why numpy is just a thin layer of python around a highly optimized C implementation. Which is perfectly fine, the operations in the python layer won't usually be your bottleneck. Python is not used for runtime speed, but for development speed.

C++ should always be at least as fast as C assuming you optimize for speed alone even if it means to ignore convenient C++ features. It's all about how good your compiler is at that point.
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

Can anyone recommend a good course covering testing(unit, integration, performance, etc.) in practice? I often find myself at a loss when I start thinking about how I am going to test the functionality that I want to.
Can it be I stayed away too long? Did you miss these rhymes while I was gone?

Those are vastly different areas of testing. I dont know of any course that covers them well "in practice". Those are all huge areas, especially so that both integration and performance testing works differently depending on what You are actualy testing (web page, application, embedded device, etc).
ISTQB Funadation level course covers various areas of testing but it is very abstract (no actual code or framework used).

If You need some more detailed and down to earth stuff i would recommend to browse for specific stuff You need. Like "performance testing of web app", "undervoltage behavior in intel boards", "web page load testing" etc. Thankfully for most areas there is some dedicated framework which points You in right direction.

Well, the best 2 books/courses I've read on the matter would be Test-Driven Development with Python and Growing Object-Oriented Software Guided by Tests.

You have plenty of examples and guidelines in them for different kinds of tests.

I don't see the "good" part. Instead I see a "there's no alternative" part.

There are some legitimately good parts to it (And many many many bad ones). An example: I love the way objects work and how ridiculously easy json integrates into them (json is in this weird place where in reality it should be super easy, yet most languages/framework I've come across which have tried to implement them have failed spectacularly. Qt is the worst example I know of, C# isn't much better off with its needless serialization).

Generally all kinds of parsing is done well in JS.

That's kind of an inherent property of "untyped" languages. And apparently you can have basically the same thing in C# if you can live with using dynamics.

I find the new Skype on Windows 10 to be even more offensive with Cortana. Everytime you write or someone types, Cortana suggests how you should respond as if you're a person incapable of emotions. Ironic when you consider that an AI advises you what to feel. One of those bad ideas that occur to Microsoft. Luckily, they also have nice ideas.

On a tangent on Skype: My current workplace uses Skype for most communication, and apparently it's a "security risk" to store logs on the local computer. Aka, any time I close a Skype window I have no fucking idea what they just said. It's like using Snapchat for business purposes.

That sounds really weird. Also, doesn't using skype mean that microsoft can basically read all of your conversations whenever they want. The encryption is not end to end afaik. Which does not sound like something that you want to use if you care a lot about "security risks".
