Scenario:
So, I was taking a dump and I forgot my book, so I came up with this scenario to keep me occupied while on the pooper:
If you met someone who had never been exposed to the internet and you only had enough time to tell them the addresses of five websites that they should absolutely know about, what websites would you list?
My personal 5 in order of importance would have to be:
1) Wikipedia 2) Youtube 3) Hulu 4) Facebook 5) Teamliquid
Reasonings:
1) Wikipedia is pretty much the sum of human knowledge. Obvious #1 for me. 2) Youtube is an epic time-sink. So much to see, and new stuff comes out daily. Easy #2. 3) Why ever watch regular T.V. again? I've spent so much time on Hulu and I think they would too. 4) The #1 social networking (yay for buzzwords!) website. Heck, even my grandparents use this thing. 5) Of course TL makes the list. Along with endless starcraft info, this is also where I get most of my general news. Great diversity of people along with excellent moderating keeps things very worldly and enjoyable.
Notes:
I didn't add Google to this list on purpose. I think that while Google is omnipotent and may actually take over the world some day, it is not absolutely essential to know about. There are so many search engines that do just as good of a job.
Conclusion:
So, what do you guys think? What would make your top 5 most important websites? Try to give a bit of reasoning like I did to your picks. Remember, the person has had no contact with the internet before, although you can assume they are smart enough to figure out the websites you are recommending.
RESULUTS!
So I tallied up the results as of page 6. I combined gmail/google as just google and yahoo and hotmail as just yahoo. If someone provided two lists, I discounted the personal list and just tallied the essential list. I also threw away all websites that only had one nomination. Here are the top 10 results:
1) Google - 65 2) Teamliquid - 58 3) Youtube - 56 4) Wikipedia - 42 5) Facebook - 35 6) Yahoo - 10 7) (Tie) Twitter - 5 7) (Tie) Digg - 5 9) (Tie) Hulu - 4 9) (Tie) Reddit - 4

I only need to recommend one site
1) Google
Why? Little experience you can find any site from the web, no need to give other sites.
|
I don't know what are the most important(obviously wikipedia is important, but do you use it on daily basis?), but I will list the sites I use the most:
1) Youtube 2) Blinkx 3) Teamliquid 4) Facebook 5) Google
Very poetic introduction, by the way.

I hope that person is american because Hulu is only for the united states

Most important websites?
1) Google (best portal to everything else on the internet) 2) Wikipedia (and all related projects, Wikinews and such) 3) Facebook (essential social network) 4) Twitter (effectively a revolution in information) 5) YouTube (infinite entertainment)
To me... 1) TL 2) Facebook 3) xkcd 4) Sankaku Complex 5) The Onion

1) TeamLiquid - I waste hours on this site a day. 2) Fark - Great for wasting hours on other sites. 3) Fetish porn site - I'm not telling which. 4) Iheartchaos - Random news articles and boobies. 5) Streaming/torrent sites - More ways to waste time.
I'm glad I read the actual content of the thread and gave what the OP was asking.
But yeah, obviously Wikipedia, Google, YouTube, and the like would be what you'd recommend to some random person.

All you need is Google (or some other appreciable search engine)!
Google is the portal that easily delivers this stuff to you. It's a map of the internet. How else would you find what you're looking for?
Seriously how did you first find Wikipedia (through Google no doubt?).
The same goes for nearly everything else

The Essential Websites:
1) TL.net: You go to this website and you'll have a thread telling you all the important websites.
2) Google: Search for anything including news and videos (no need for YouTube) and half the time you get Wikki results anyways ZING!
3) Facebook: Probably the most popular social website (not necessarily the best)
4) any porn site you prefer: Face it, this is what the internet was made for and has been there since the begining of internet's life.
5) any torrent site you prefer: I think any sort of media/file share/transfer is essential these days.
My most visited:
1) The Weather Network 2) TL.net 3) Facebook 4) My university courses page 5) ATDHE.net
In that order.
Edit: Cant believe I forgot torrents -. - Changed 5) from more porn to torrent.

A lot of people are picking tl without actually reading the premise of this thread. Would you tell someone who doesn't know about starcraft and has no interest in it about tl? Obviously you can joke and say yes but be reasonable.
I think google is very essential. Wikipedia is very essential. With those two you have almost everything you need. Images.google.com to search for images if that doesn't count as google. imageshack or equivalent is a great one to have. Not doing this in any particular order.

1) www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de - Carpooling service which allows one to circumvent the exorbitant prices of the DB. 2) www.leo.org - English-German and French-German dictionaries, best I've found on the web. 3) www.couchsurfing.org - This website needs no introduction to the globetrotter, I have saved hundreds in accomodation expenses with this website. 4) www.facebook.com - I do not use this website as much as most people (particularly women) but I do use it to communicate occasionally. 5) www.jstor.org OR www.dict.pl - I use jstor for casual reading more than for academic purposes, and dict.pl is the best and most handy English-Polish dictionary I know of on the web.
I also use the following websites fairly often
www.bbc.co.uk - I usually browse around this website every morning for a few minutes www.youtube.com - I use this website to browse around for news clips, interviews, cooking instructions, violin tips, and other how-to guides www.how-to-learn-any-language.com - Acts more as a support community and a motivation-charger than anything else. Occasionally there will be useful tips on learning materials and cultural events. www.gutenberg.org - I cannot stand reading on the computer, I mainly use this website to find particular quotations I wish to use. www.sharedtalk.com - Acts as a 24-hour troubleshooter for whichever foreign language I happen to be having problems with. www.travelblog.org - When I am not travelling, I like to read about other peoples' travels.

1) TL 2) There are other websites out there?!?!

All you need to recommend is google. From there you can find just about anything.
Also why would you recommend TL? As much as I love the site, I'd hardly call it essential to the internet. A person who doesn't know about the internet, probably has no need to learn about Starcraft.

1) Google.ca - If you can't find something then what use is the internet? 2) Facebook 3) Youtube 4) Wikipedia 5) Fantasti.cc - BY FAR THE BEST PORN SITE ON THE INTERNET. I don't think I need to explain Google, Wikipedia, and Youtube. I put 4Chan up there even though I don't use because their power over the world is undeniable. They have the power to control western pop culture, and also to control anything over the internet. Their influence over the world is much greater than the governments a lot of countries. The Economist can be replaced with BBC, or any other news site you use. World news is super important.
I didn't put Facebook up there because Facebook is completely useless. It didn't improve the internet in any way, shape, or form. All it is, is people wasting a few hours a day typing random comments that nobody cares about. Everything on the internet is either for information, entertainment, or communication. Facebook doesn't fit information and entertainment at all, and the only communication that happens is some random person posting "I'm feeling depressed" and then a lot of people saying "lol".

I don't see how hulu is essential, since its only available in 1 country. ;>
I'd tell him about depthcore.com, torrents, twitter, search engines. and then sutff that would actually intrigue him.
I mean who the fuck goes on to the internet for the first time and finds facebook interesting? I'd be more excited about things like facial recognition sites that tell you what celebrety you look like, just by uploading a picture, ordering food/other shit online, google earth/street view would totally trip me out and such stuff. a lame ass social site with a buch of pictures and status updates of random people would seem like nothing really compared to things that actually help you and are interesting for the first timer.
Social media, email and similar stuff are more for people that are already confortable with the web, for the new user they're just plain awkward and don;t make much sense.

I'd be really wary of corporate edits on wiki. They take great interest in how their "product" may be portrayed... and that isn't to make sure its true, its to make sure it keeps selling.
Like the page on "aspartame"... doesn't even scratch the surface of the dangers of it.
Sure its a good site for history, maybe some science... but anything medical or to do with your diet, or say... whats in your water or air... I wouldn't go there.

I'd definatly say the top three are: Wikipedia Google Youtube
Wikipedia has a crap load of information and it makes reports so easy lol. I mean for reports all I do is take parts out of like one article and usually get much more than enough pages, and thats with skimming down the subjects a lot. Google is an absolute must. It is like the gate to heaven. Youtube because of all the fun videos and stuff you can find there. You can get a lot of entertainment out of it and with how short the videos are, you don't have to stay on the computer long to watch them, though chances are you will.

Wow, Last.fm is definitely one of the most useful sites around, can't believe one guy's mentioned it

The only websites I actually go to directly are teamliquid and youtube, the rest I just find through google.

As soon as I pop open my chrome, I start with 1) TL 2) FB and then after going through the recommended games from results and going through the FB apps, I'll open 3) Youtube and start loading a few videos, and watch until procrastination pressure is too great so I open 4) Wikipedia 5) Google to quickly search up a few things and get shit done.
