What a travesty . I suppose it has run it's course though....so sad
After eight seasons, FOX is pulling the plug on its long-running action-drama 24, new reports claim. The thriller, which stars Kiefer Sutherland as gun-toting Agent Jack Bauer, is expected to end its run due escalating production costs and a dive in ratings at the end of the current season, Variety said this week.
According to the trade paper, an official statement from the network announcing the cancellation of 24 is expected sometime this week.
The eighth season of 24 will reportedly end with a two-hour season finale on Monday, May 24 @ 8 PM ET/PT.

outrageous! i believe this is a terrorist attack, somebody call bauer! damnit i love 24

I never understood why people like this serie. I watched season 1 and it was absolutely HORRIBLE in every aspect. The acting was super bad the story line didn't make any sense the action was boring. Terrible show. Never bothered to watch the other season so it might have gotten better.
|
I always found it a little odd how most television dramas simply have situation and lack a true storyline. But I see how it's convenient for the networks in that they can just drop the show at any point. Also writers and actors only need to work on a short term basis. It's a minor complaint though, the shows are usually good anyway, don't feel disappointed when they end though.
(I'm not talking about 24 in particular, I didn't really watch this series)
|
I never liked it, good riddance.
|
|
There was no other way to kill Bauer.
|
I didn't watch it, but surely by 8 seasons the plot would have run it's course anyway.
|
NBC needs to follow suit and cancel Heroes now.....
|
Loved season 1, thought season 2 was alright, only watched a few episodes of season 3, and haven't watched an episode since then.
I can't believe Sutherland stuck with it for so long. Fox must have been paying him a shitload of money to stay.

Please let this happen. Please please please cancel Heroes now. I replaced that show with Breaking Bad and haven't looked back.

Finally, I thought season 1 was okay, watched a little bit of season 2. The gimmick started to run thin by that time already. Such a predictable and tired show that was.
|
sad this was my first tv show i remember watching s3 because there was a portuguese actor playing as a mexican drug lord (lol)

Was this information obtained through torture?
I'm not sure we can trust it, if that's the case.

bring back terminator!

Really lost it's appeal after season 1

Thank god. It started to be such a crap show around season 3...

I recently just quit watching the show too. Becoming too repetitive. They had enough possibilities for some creativity, but chose to stay with a miraculous comeback to CTU every time. Too bad.
|
Usually I don't care if a show I don't watch is cancelled or not - but I think this can obtusely be seen as a good sign that terrorism isn't necessarily the most pressing topic in the public's mind anymore. Well, that or the show started to suck.
|
If Jack Bauer actually dies at the end, then I will be satisfied
|
Season one was awesome, but I never understood why they had to make a sequel... and then another... and another... Now, this action thriller has more episodes than some soap-operas...
|
ahahahahahahaha It shouldn't have even lasted that long

I'm surprised it survived this long.

Oh what joyless world is this, that caskets beauty and excellence with such abandon.
+ Show Spoiler + the show sucked, long past its due date

Crap. It still was entertaining, at least to me.

In any case, i'll rate my favourite seasons in order:
season 6 season 7 season 2 season 5 season 4 season 1 season 3 season 8 (so far)
but these are all really close.. 3 wasn't bad at all

6??? 6 is your highest ranked?? That was hands down the WORST season of them all (outside of the opening 4 episodes which were amazing). Once they had that nuke detonated in Valencia which was crazy, it went downhill super fast. Jack's dad as the villain made no sense at all and his nephew was very annoying.
EDIT: For me it goes 7 > 5 > 2 > 1 > 8 > 3 > 4 > 6

Show was bad, never understood how it hung on.
|
THANK GOD
this season is SO TERRIBLE
Season 1 was good
Season 5 was okay
Season 7 wasn't bad
the rest were terrible

I watched one episode. I couldn't see how it lasted 8 seasons.

season 1 was the best season ever!!!!!

They should have ended the series with everything getting nuked by terrorists. "WHERE IS YOUR TARGET?! WHE--" *BOOM*. Would have been a pretty kick-ass ending.

I hate this show, i'm not sorry to see it go. But i know plenty of people that love it.. would hate for it to be a show i liked
|

I like it because it sucks so much

the show was good for the lols.
i found it funny in the recent episode when the terrorist jumps out a 3 story window and the proceeds to run off and find some hyperbolic chamber,. rofl.

I won't really miss it, and I've watched every season. Enjoyed it too for the most part, but I'm fine with it ending. Calling the format revolutionary would probably be an overstatement, but watching season 1 for the first time was so sick. 8 seasons is a good run, way more than almost all shows get. It's certainly true that it get's repetitive, but the same is true for most TV series. Good watch if you don't take it too seriously.

(never seen it thou so it might be a good show but i still dont wanna hear more comercialls about what's about to happen next in 24 ^^ )

Good riddance. You can only run so many "Daddy, help protect me" plots before they start getting stale. The show as extremely infantile in it's worldview. The stories sucked ass and the acting was, well, sub par.
|
I think I watched half of 1st season, then Season 2 and maybe Season3, then I got bored.
|
Good riddance
|
All TV shows should be limited a priori to 3 seasons.
Whenever a good show debuts, the plot always dies or becomes retarded as they try to stretch it out for as many seasons as possible. Make a good show, keep the story tight and focused, and move on when it's time to move on. Network TV needs to take a lesson from HBO, or from every other form of entertainment. It's like being 60 minutes into a movie you like and having someone splice in 4 hours of crap and then tacking on an ending as an afterthought.
|

Really?
After 8 seasons of saving the planet in a day this show gets canceled? That is like, 5 seasons too late imo.
I loved season 1-2 but after that I thought that it got a bit ridiculous and the show was going to milk every single season they could possibly go on a great concept that loses value over time.
Arrested Development only goes for 2.5 seasons but this show can have 8 Very bad imo.
AGAIN it deserves repeating but the first few seasons were great but after that it SUCKED.

This guy is right. I'll agree with some of the acting being subpar, but the worldview comment was out of left field. All the show did was show that pretty much every nationality, Americans included, have people willing to screw over everything and anything for various reasons. If anything, it was pretty cool how they didn't rely on stupid racial tropes.
|
I'm both sad that is canceled, but accepting of it. 24 was good, I've been hooked on it since season 4 (never watched the early ones), but 8 seasons is alot, so I think its okay to let it rest now.
|
While I'm sad about this decision but it is not a bad move. Watched every season of 24, I has run its course, the plot like someone pointed out already is very repeative at some point. Well, finally Jack is gonna die I want to see more Elisha Culberth though

Blergh, and I liked the show too, contrary to other opinions.
Oh well, Jack's luck was going to run out sooner or later. Either that, or they're going to end with him just leaving to LA and retiring for good.

Sooo many shows have had a fantastic first season, whereupon the producers are like "holy shit, this is big" and proceed to milk the crap out of the series, throwing quality out the window somewhere down the line. Is it too much to ask for more TV series where the plot actually has a predetermined, well thought out ending?
Now somebody needs to axe CSI. It pains me that it's still airing.

Well, the past few seasons have been kinda disappointing, so I'm not surprised. Watching the first few seasons the first time was quite amazing though. It was a good run.
|
I've seen a good chunk of the seasons and I have been happy for the most part. Some seasons had shitty sub-plots that killed the main focus and some were pretty good throughout. I've done a couple of the "24 marathons" where I watch the entire season in a sitting with some friends and you can really see some of the flaws .
Overall I have enjoyed the run it has had. I was actually expecting it to end in the near future, not because of dislike, but because a lot of the characters are winding down. I expect the House series to follow suite soon as well.
It is interesting that most of the thread has pretty much bashed the crap out of the series. Obviously its ratings over the years have been up and down, but overall it has been a great success. It's nice some on reality based shows can still have some life in todays media. Out of those who really disliked the series, what do you enjoy watching?

I love 24 but the last episode really annoyed me.

OMG NO WTF I LOVE THIS SHOW
|
Everything has to end. Let Jack live through rest of days peacefully.
But they should have let this season the final, not just cancel the freaking show in the middle of it.
|
THis show is just so stupid, it never really entertained me at all. Maybe they'll replace it with some actually entertaining programming (probably not)
|
|
The problem these days when you cancel shows is that the networks just replaces them with even shitter shows that will eventually be canceled and replaced by even shittierier shows which will eventually be...
|
But 24 replaced the dying X-file.
|
http://www.imdb.com/news/ni1765913/
24 may live to see another day after all. Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that 20th Century Fox has approached NBC about picking up the series should Fox opt to cancel it — and the Peacock is considering it. "There's definitely some interest," says an insider close to the talks. Earlier this week, reports surfaced that 20th (a.k.a. the studio) and Fox (a.k.a. the network) are nearing a mutual decision to end the serial thriller after eight seasons due to declining ratings and rising costs. A move to NBC — while still considered somewhat of a long shot.
|
A move to NBC — while still considered somewhat of a long shot given the hefty price tag — would likely delay 20th’s plans to launch a Jack Bauer film franchise.

Everytime a new season was announced, I was wondering how many people Jack Bauer had killed. Seeing this thread I was wondering again, but of course someone has already covered this:
http://bauerkillcount.com
202 kills in the first seven seasons. Not too bad, but I expected more actually. Well, 168 hours isn't too much time, when you sometimes also have to drop an atomic bomb into a desert.
On another note, I watched Season 2 and really liked it, mainly because of the concept (and Elisha Cuthbert). Midway Season 3 I got bored with it. I also cannot believe how it lasted that long.
|
Well, now it's officially the last season according to a twitter post by the director, Jon Cassar. NBC couldn't get the rights to it... time for the movie.

Man. Season 1. Has and will always be the best. RIP 24.
|
I didnt like the show either... But 8 seasons is a lot :T
|
I believe it's a while ago since it was mentioned in the media that season 8 would be the last one. I don't know if it was Kiefer who said it. If he was tired of doing the same thing, it would obviously be hard to carry on the show without him.
People say that the acting was bad, but I really bought into it. It was the first time I really got absorbed by a plot of this kind, and I took everything very seriously. For some reason, for instance, it seemed completely believable to me that the arab family who were a terrorist sleeper cell had a deeply felt wish to carry out their acts of terrorism. The story was so comprehensive that it seemed actually to be insightful into how things would happen in real life.
I wasn't taking aback by silly plots or countless twists, and I've enjoyed every season so far. Granted, the first season seemed to be the one with the strongest story, but every season was special, and there were some interesting persons to follow. Because of the intensity of the acting, it's also more exciting to see the women on the show. I really enjoyed the femme fatale who blew up the airplane in season one (basically got me hooked), or the young women turned terrorist in another season and Nina Meyers seemed filled to the brink with personal intricacies and mystery. Beautiful like Jack's daughter and Michelle Dessler even got to have something more than a pretty face as well. Even all the feel-good buddy-moments between president Palmer and Jack work as I bought into the president persona presented.
I don't consider myself easily entertained, but I definitely enjoy 24. I remember watching one of the episodes of season 3 or 4 on TV at random before I started on the series, and it seemed random and boring. So, at first, I was very sceptical about watching the series when my brother bought the DVD for season 1, but the femme fatale who blew up the airplane enticed me to watch on, hoping for more good stuff. Got completely caught up on the story, and it was exhilarating to watch 8-9 episodes in a row, with the volume on the TV near maximum. Was hard to stop watching because of the cliffhanger style that the series uses. Yet, as long as we get a full season 8, I can accept the series coming to a stop as well. After watching season 7, I feel like the series has possibly exhausted its plot and the the good things might be fading or becoming trivial.
