I always make sure to stay well hydrated when I play bw for 50 hours without stopping. Dehydration messes with the decision making.

How is it pathetic? The man died over playing too much starcraft. If someone i knew died from playing starcraft I might feel a little uneasy around the game as well.

EDIT: Didn't read the article before making a comment.

There was another story about someone dying after 50hours of starcraft in sk.

I always joked "Silly korean... can only go 50 hours before dying?"

Those parents are awful o.O
And the SC player, damn. I've played for over 10 hours once and I had absolutely no idea what was going on by the end of it. I couldn't play cat and mouse, never mind a competitive 1;1
And I had food/drink breaks.

IIRC, the last guy to die from non-stop gaming lasted ~80 hours.

50 hours is not news.

How did you fuck this up so bad lol. It's not the story about a guy dieing from playing too much video games. Its about how 2 parents went on a marathon session raising a virtual child and when they came home, their REAL child had died of malnurtrition.

^EXACTLY

also maybe most people are completely ignoring the article details/comments or you truly just don't give a damn:

- parents raise a virtual baby in their MMORPG instead of caring for their real baby
- parents returned home after a 12-hour gaming session to find their 3-month old baby dead from dehydration
- parents lie to the police about finding the baby dead after they 'woke up from sleep'
- all this occured 5 months ago, and the parents were only arrested 2 days ago as they went into hiding right after the child's funeral
- they say "due to our guilt we haven't been to a PC cafe in these last 5 months" when they are caught

I remember another story from a few years ago where a couple had three kids, the youngest of whom had died from malnutrition while the parents played WoW all day. The house was stocked with food, but the parents weren't taking breaks to fix it for the kids or something like that and they were all too young to feed themselves.

the columnist needs to cite his sources cuz the guy dropping dead after 50 hours of starcraft was from YEARS ago, nowhere close to "recent." It wasn't just cuz he played for 50 hours, it was more the fact that he had an existing heart condition, which was exacerbated by staring at a monitor and eating sodium-rich cup ramen for the entirety of those sleepless 50 hours.

Here's what I think - A real baby you would care for due to more abstract human-nature feelings - love, parental instinct, etc. The in-game baby, on the other hand, was specifically designed to deliver an experience to grasp the user and make them addicted through tiny rewards (assuming that it's something like WoW). If they did something to care for the virtual baby, they would get some kind of positive feedback like "YAY +50 EXP" wheras a real-life baby dosen't really seem any different before or after you give them a bottle of formula. So, it could just be that the parents are stupid and didn't realize what they had to do to take care of a child without getting positive feedback. Or, it could be that the game was so well-designed and their sense of human emotion was so stifled that the desire for advancement in-game outweighed instinctual attachment to their daughter.

This kind of makes me think of this games conference presentation I watched earlier today. While the Korea incident is an instance of game design possibly hurting people (though obviously the real blame lies with the parents), that presentation tried to list ways game design could help people become better. Maybe if there was a more quantifiable measurement of their real life child's growth they would have taken better care of her. Experience points for changing the diaper, achievements on their birthdays, etc... I realize how ridiculous and pathetic that sounds, but in this specific instance it would have probably made them better parents.

A 28-year-old man dropped dead recently after playing his favorite game Starcraft for 50 hours non-stop without eating or drinking.

wasn't that like 8 years ago? or is this a common occurrence?

This is so true, but seriously, WTF? I get played a video game for a couple of hours, but not 12 hours straight leaving your baby at home... I've gone two days straight playing games, but I would like eat and drink water in between. I did this when I Was trying to see how fast I can beat FFX. I did it in 68hrs T_T.

Anyone know if the parents had some psychological problems? Who just ignores their child to play video games all day.

That is sooo crazy... How can someone (the mother in this case) give birth to a child, and then basically forget about it to play mass video games, her favorite game being about raising a child.

How stupid and heartless... i'm not out to demonize her but its just -insanity-.

The longest non-stop gaming I've done is probably 12 hours (7pm -> 7am) when I hosted a lan party at my place, we bet each other who had greatest gaming endurance and of course I won, haha. Basically we play randomly until everyone but 2 people fall asleep, then a series of 1v1 matches in various games (SC included) to decide the winner!

The point is though, after that one, I felt DEAD. Like, after the last match, I fell asleep on the floor and woke up like 5-6pm, thankfully my friends cleaned up the mess (beer, pizza, you know, the usual stuff) and didn't rob my place, lol.

Koreans can game for long time, no doubt.

Hey guys guys, this already happened in the horror discussion thread:

+ Show Spoiler +
TRAINING DOLLS

In rural southern Illinois a toy company began selling "realistic" baby dolls to expectant mothers. But apparently after the mother had her child the toy baby would start crying. Eventually the "rocking motion" advertised to calm it down wouldn't work, and you couldn't get it to stop without shaking it. Eventually when it started crying the parent would have to beat it, and the beatings and thrashings would have to get harder and harder to get it to be quiet. The only thing that seemed to shut the baby doll up permanently was the bash its head against the wall to destroy whatever mechanism triggered the crying. On more than one occasion though, neighbors called the authorities to report child abuse, and when the police arrived they found the the bloody remains of infants smeared across the walls and the floor. In most cases the mother couldn't understand why the police were there, she just "got rid of the stupid doll" as she rocked a baby-shaped bundle in her arms.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Online games are massively popular in South Korea.

A 28-year-old man dropped dead recently after playing his favorite game Starcraft for 50 hours non-stop without eating or drinking.

shocking, but the journalist sucks. why would a multi-paragraph story about the death of the baby with a random entrance into a new story. its like a badly written sat question, on "pick which sentence does not fit in the story."

I cant find myself playing for more than at max maybe 12 hours without getting a migraine or have pain developing in my wrists and hand.

I sort of had this experience when I fainted after playing Dynasty Warriors 3 on the PS2 for the whole day, my thumbs were numb and I didnt eat. I remember those days how fun PS2 was, too bad it died pretty fast(Something with the fuse) after we sorta left it on 24/7.

You either can't read the English letters PC, or you didn't go to the city, or you are legally blind. I remember standing on a street corner in Jongro and counting 7 PC Bangs.
Edit: And that's not even that high probably compared to other areas.

Either shes rather unattractive or he is a player. OT though, this is horrible, you just got to know that there has to be a limit!

who else got the image of the baby from trainspotting when reading this?
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

WTF? Love for a game is understanble for the "gamers" but how the fuck can pass the love to a own child?????

A 28-year-old man dropped dead recently after playing his favorite game Starcraft for 50 hours non-stop without eating or drinking.

wasn't that like 8 years ago? or is this a common occurrence?

also maybe most people are completely ignoring the article details/comments or you truly just don't give a damn:

- parents raise a virtual baby in their MMORPG instead of caring for their real baby
- parents returned home after a 12-hour gaming session to find their 3-month old baby dead from dehydration
- parents lie to the police about finding the baby dead after they 'woke up from sleep'
- all this occured 5 months ago, and the parents were only arrested 2 days ago as they went into hiding right after the child's funeral
- they say "due to our guilt we haven't been to a PC cafe in these last 5 months" when they are caught

WTF

I normally don't buy into insanity stuff, but there is something very wrong with them mentally.

I think insanity is a very vague condition these days. Do you mean to say there was some pre-existing imbalance in their brain, or that they just lost control of their own lives?

Unless he took the risk of being shot, and proceeded to bribe the Chinese Embassy to fly him in, I'd think it's safe to say he went to South.

unbelievable...

they'd rather raise their online avatar, rather than spend at least a few hours with their own real-life child. if there's such a place as hell, i hope there's a special place reserved for them in there.

I know that this is real...but I just don't understand how it could of possibly occurred. Especially when they were playing some retarded game about raising a virtual kid.

The irony... as my uncles say, retards like those deserve to have their lives ruined... Speak of having their REAL baby die because they were too busy taking care of a VIRTUAL baby.

At least the dude that died playing 50hrs of starcraft died honorably.

JK. Though the dude still amazes me... I can barely play 4 hrs straight max...

Eh it's like people who leave their kids in hot cars while shopping. There's always going to be someone doing something dumb and selfish. I'm surprised so many people are that shocked by this. Not feeding and caring for a baby properly.
