I don't know if you know internet stuff, but my home internet upload speed is extremely slow. My download speed clocks at at 4.2Mbps, but my upload speed is 539 kbps. This was done only my computer connected to my router (Linksys WRT54G) and all file sharing programs off. 2nd: I seem to have a problem registering files. I can't do it manually with regsvr32 either. I'm running Vista 64 bit with UAC turned off. Thanks ^_^

IE8 is the worst followed by Chrome and Opera. I really wonder why? It has nothing to do with smooth scrolling being enabled or not. And it's particularly bad when browsing GMail, but it's even noticable on low resource sites like TL. Have any idea?

Broken video overlay, either your drivers / video card is broken or the overlay settings are busted. I can take a look at it if you PM me the details.

That sounds plausible, unfortunately I can't update my drivers because there are no Windows 7 drivers for the ATI Mobility Radeon X700. They only have mobility drivers for the newest cards on the ATI page, so I'm stuck with the ones Windows Update installed for me D: Everything else works fine though.. can play games, Aero Glass works.

I also never defragment my computer, is that horrible? Also, can laptops be run 24/7 or is that bad? I bought a Coolermaster Pad but does this just only mitigate the pain I'm putting it through? I like to make my virtual memory as large as possible, it seems to make the computer run a lot faster - are there any adverse effects to this or an optimal size to make it?

Using WRT54G, Vista 64 bit. Is it because of router incompatibility? Also, my sister (using the same router via wired connection) uses XP, and when she logs in, the same thing happens too. If it's my router's problem, what router brand and model do you recommend?

For me, it helps to quit all programs using DirectSound (Winamp etc.) before playing. To fix colors in menus, it's sufficient to keep the screen resolution settings windows open - don't ask me why. This is what I do and I haven't had any crashes since. Another trick I've heard is manually assigning starcraft.exe to only one CPU core in the task manager because apparently it doesn't work properly with multi-core CPUs. That's not necessary for me though. I'm running Windows7 RC build 7100 on an Intel Core2 Quad.

I recently reinstalled XP from a wiped hard drive (biggest pain in the ass ever - I wiped my drive before checking the condition of my disks, and they were all scratched up, so my install was just a tad bit broken, eventually managed to find a replacement CD and get it up and running), and almost everything is running in perfect condition now, but my internet connection. Basically my connection before the wipe was great. I have Vuze running, be getting 1000 kb/s (depending on what I was downloading, of course), and Firefox would run flawlessly. The only thing I couldn't do while downloading was watch user streams, and even that I could do if I was willing to put up with some varying levels of lag. Now that I have my computer up and running, my internet connection is noticeably slower. And I'm really not sure what I have to do. Whether I have to change some default settings, or reconfigure my router, or what. But now if I'm downloading with a torrent program, I rarely get above 300 kb/s, even on torrents that I had downloaded before and know are well seeded (I was downloading a large 100GB+ torrent before I wiped my drive, when there weren't many seeders, it took 5-6 days to download completely... and now it's estimated at taking 14 weeks), and if I am downloading while browsing the internet, pages take a noticeable few seconds to load.

When ever I play graphics intensive games, the computer either hangs or restarts. I used to run L4D, Halo and others fine. Other less intensive games work fine (i.e. Starcraft, Diablo2) and I can watch movies normally etc.. I don't think I have a problem with any of my hardware overheating, I have a couple fans and my case is partially open. I only had this problem when I added my old IDE HD to my PC. So yeah, I really think its either of my graphics card or power supply. Any ideas?

I like to make my virtual memory as large as possible, it seems to make the computer run a lot faster - are there any adverse effects to this or an optimal size to make it? Ad-aware was good when it was the only product, but there are far better ones these days. You should defragment at least once or twice a year, seek times are one of the main bottlenecks in a modern PC. Laptops on 24/7 may run a higher risk of failure due to dust/etc jamming up the fans / heatsinks. Pagefile should always be on automatic, setting it any higher has very little benefit - if your pagefile gets hit that hard then your PC will be pretty unusable anyway.

Most likely either your TCP settings need tweaking (RWIN and scaling) or you need the "10 half open connection" patch to be able to P2P effectively. www.speedtest.net is the only really reliable way of gauging your connection speed, P2P is very unreliable for speed testing.

Try rebooting your router / modem, if it fixes it, that was likely the problem.

T_T Depending on the type of NAT used by the router, it's entirely possible it implements NAT in such a way that only one connection at a time can be used on a single port. Verify your ports are forwarded properly, if it still occurs it's most likely a bad NAT implementation. Try with just the modem and see if that works.

This is still relevant =/ To update, I can run my computer for DAYS if all I run is itunes, aim, firefox, etc, but as soon as I run something like warcraft for more than 5 minutes, the comp freezes with a grinding noise. I've replaced the mother board, video card, run ram tests, replaced the sound card, reformated (twice), the only things that I haven't replaced/tested are the power supply and the processor *edit* which makes it seem obvious that I should replace those, but there's a lot of random crap plugged into the psu that makes it a more difficult swap out

i just recently got a used laptop from a friend who reformatted the thing with a Korean version of the XP OS so I can't understand some of the shit going on... I thought you might have a much better general knowledge of this kind of stuff... If I remember correctly, he told me he partitioned two drives? So I have a C drive and a D drive and he told me to save all my shit in the D drive which is like 20 gigs whereas the C drive is 40 gigs. Im only used to using one local disk drive so i dont get wtf is going on. Everytime I try installing anything straight from the desktop it doesnt work, but if I put the setup files in my D drive it runs fine. Although it works, it's kind of a hassel because I dont see the significance of having split drives.. and my directories get all fucked up so half the time the programs dont work without me having to re-browse for the main folder. Is there some easier way to settle this WITHOUT having to reformat again? Also, the same laptop wont fucking shut down sometimes (like at least 3/5 times). I dunno if this is the exact cause but everytime it failed to shut down, it tried ending a process called BTNHD.exe which seems to be a unique process only available on Fujitsu Lifebook notebooks. Could this possibly be the cause of it? Or are there more general issues with Windows not shutting down properly? To be more specific on how this thing behaves: Scenario A: I click START> shut down> turn off (that red button, my labels might be wrong) It ends the processs BTNHD.exe (ive tried ending the task immediately, and also letting it end automatically after going through that progress bar, same result) and nothing else happens. I try shutting down again and again and it doesn't do anything after that. Scenario B: I do the same process of shutting it down, this time NO BTNHD.exe appears, but it gets stuck at the damn blue windows screen (not blue screen of death, im talking about like the welcome screen) and it says Windows is Shutting Down and it gets stuck there for hours... Sorry if my problem isn't clear enough or too long, I usually try figuring it out myself on Google but none of the pages I looked at seemed to answer it precisely, and none of the methods seemed to work yet either. I'm hoping an expert like you can help out, thanks!

A couple of days ago this problem started. I have to click links 2times for them to work. If i click once, it may stay loading forever, but if I click again it loads pretty fast. My brother's laptop seems unaffected, weirdly enough. Whatever laptop I used, my uni's Lenovo T61 or my old Toshiba Satellite L10, it always died at midnight. I checked my router to see if there was something wrong, nothing completely wrong that I could see. The lease time for internet access was allowed for everyday for 0 minutes (meaning 1 day, so internet access SHOULD stay on the entire time). I tried setting the lease date to 9999 minutes but still dies at midnight. Any suggestions?

More info: I did not install anything new. I ran spybot S&D and hijackthis, and pasted the log in one of those log scanners, nothing found. It happens in firefox 3.5 and in IE 8. I ran Avira and found nothing. Is it something that got de-configured? is it my isp? In an argentinian forum, someone mentioned something about DNS, but i didnt understand ![]() thanks in advance. Either packet loss on your ISP or your router/modem has crummy NAT implementation. Try ping -c 100 google.com to check for packet loss. Also try bypassing your router if possible.
