Both games are total rolls. CCM is the current LGD/EHOME back when they looked undefeatable, but EHOME messed up this games, so they couldn't even make it past mid game.

So, my friend got me HoN because he didn't like LoL very much. I've been playing LoL and DotA on and off for the past few years (mostly LoL) though I played HoN for a short time in beta.
I played a few no stats, looked up the heroes' moves, etc then tried a ranked game. Evidently, I'm missing something. Is there anywhere where I could find/get an advanced tutorial in the game for stuff like ward placement, item builds, current tactics, juking spots, etc? Because people seem to always want to send a tank instead of ranged carry mid (Seriously? Making me mid Deadwood when we have Pyro and Arachna?), berate me for warding "the wrong areas", and for "buying the wrong shit".
I know my basics, when to run, when to fight, which items are good for what type, etc, but I need a bit of fine tuning and more experience.
Also why does that bitch with the scythe (Fayde?) 2 shot me at lvl 5?

For all the stuff you're asking about, I used a huge thread from the HoN forums that had short guide for every hero. But after I stopped using it, it has become horribly outdated, so I'm not sure where to send you.
But more importantly. Using the word tank makes most sane HoN players cringe, even so, deadwood isn't one regardless. In addition to that, deadwood is mid 99% of the time, and both arach and pyro are just fine on lane.

Also why does that bitch with the scythe (Fayde?) 2 shot me at lvl 5? warding: mostly just Dota spot, find the warding guide for dota: mostly works in HoN items is depend on what role you are in your team and tatics is basicly team stuff, if you are on ur own i advice u to stay away.
There are few heros that are different from dota so learn them if you are new. The theory about who is going mid is: the highest skill person in the team for last hit/deny and hero that is usefull at level 6 for ganking. As soon as you could survive in mid and gank mid game, there should be no problem for you to stay there but most of the time you want a range nuker/stunner (witch slayer, ss, pyro, valk...)
juking spot is basicly rune area since there is 1 every 2 minutes and its important since runes helps a TONs in game. If you wana hv experience just try to look at the mini map more and learn the pattern of the game
well, so far i think if you could do well in DotA, you should hv no trouble in this

Too bad most of my replays have disappeared lol... You could litterally follow my progress into learning this game: "Sit" "SIT" "SIT OR BE BANNED" Me> Huh? Got kicked outa game ...Good times (I didn't know I even had to click somewhere to be offically joined) + (Swapping heroes, that was good fun)
http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=64274 Its a little outdated, but its pretty much my hon bible (There's a good ward guide in there too, with pictures and stuff too) +Honcast vids I found are really helpful (I always did a 2-1-2)

The guy fortunately picked it back up about a month ago, it's alright for learning heroes in solo MM but it doesn't really teach you when you want to get, say, a bottle or a ring of the teacher, that is something you pick up yourself as you play. Same thing for whenever it tells you to go pk, on a few heroes it's important to get it by a certain minute mark and if you can't make it until then you want to get a couple items before it or delay some starting items for it.
Also DW is not a tank, his combo 1shots stuff and he is mid because he is expected to gank non stop from the second he hits 6 to min. 25-30 when he becomes completely useless. Tanks in HoN don't really exist simply because they die in 5 hits from a melee carry regardless. Farmed characters are tankier in the lategame but that is just because they have levels and a fuckton of gold over others.

anyone know of a site where I can find DotA vods? Preferably the best teams/players?
Or alternatively, if I want to watch the best players play, which teams/competitions should I google VODs for

I guess it has something to do with playing the game for too long but I find dota/hon so lackluster compared to starcraft 1/2, public games are so easy that it's just not funny anymore, and there's just no point in trying to play dota competitively, you end up wasting huge amounts of time trying to find good players who you feel comfortable playing with(which is very hard in my country, since good players often have huge egoes plus crab mentality) and then there's the difficulty of getting your team to train properly because most players don't really dedicate themselves to the game, despite playing everyday for hours. Many dota/hon players(including the famous ones) have this crab mentality that makes them despise players that discuss strategy/watch replays/get highly ranked on the ladders, it was incredible the amount of hating I received everyday ("you have no life","you are a cheater")when I was handily at the top of my country's ladder( and then I stopped playing). To sum it up, there's absolute no glory in playing hardcore dota unless you live in china or play for the absolute best european teams, average players do not respect your achievements, ever( which is not nearly the case in starcraft).

There's now the Prodex that's a good reference for new players when if comes to recommended lanes, builds and roles.

I liked how the old thread on the HoN forum used to list the stengths and counters for each hero though.

Gosugamers is the best place to find times for big matches, but they don't really link to Vods often. If you're ok with replays, they have the best English replay section.
For recent English Casts: http://www.cybergamertv.com/tv/vods/ <- Tobi's channel http://www.own3d.tv/MYM <- MYM.tv's channel http://www.own3d.tv/live/3716/Fivestream (My channel)
To be honest, if you want to watch the best you have to scour through Sgamer as Chinese Dota is far beyond most of everything else at the moment. But MYM nations cup, as well as games from top Euro teams (Garaj(DTS), Na'Vi, MYM, GGnet) are still pretty watchable.
There's a big lan in Kazakhstan atm (OSPL), hopefully there'll be a watchable livestream at some point, but possibly not. I'll probably be watching that and MLG today at the same time if all goes well. Other than that, most matches involving to top 5-10 European teams are broadcasted live nowadays, you can usually find a stream in the matchthread in Gosugamers but I'll start posting some here those that I think are worth watching.

i thought the translated 2009's commentaries were pretty informative but the actual games he picked for commentating werent very good so there wasnt much to talk about

A bit outdated but there's plenty of advice you can get there, both in the OP and in the following posts (could someone please finally add it to the OP here? I'm getting tired of constantly re-linking it here when people ask for advice like that).
The guide doesn't really cover item builds, for that you'll have to ask others to link you to good ones. During your initial games though, it won't be a bad idea to get stuff from the 'recommended items' in the shop. After all, correct item builds start to matter more the better you and your competition get. Pre 1750(?) it's just raw skill, you can get by with random items most of the time.
Fayde has some crazy nukes/stuns and people often get codex on her (but I doubt someone got codex at lvl 5). Perhaps she got DD or you were really squishy.

Not using the site my self, but they cast VoDs. I think the level of knowledge is decent, though not on a level of day9-ish.

There aren't good English-speaking commentators for DotA, no offense to any of them, but they present pretty elementary stuff. Hit0mi and Synderen are the only two I would/could listen to without having to mute it.
Like I still remember ESWC where Hit0mi kept getting cut off by some fucktard who thought it was super smart by Puppey to punt the bottom lane by putting both Dark Seer and Morph into the forest and letting EHome's Lion to drop a super quick level 11 and dagger on them.
The Chinese commentators....so good and insightful, like they say what isn't obvious like what is the key to each teams success on a level deeper than hero X needs to drop 300 cs.
