The lapras debacle was pretty sad considering they're not even close to acquiring it. They'd still need another slot for one of the hitmons and ended up junking a team slot with an oddish (helix knows why..) so people need to get over the eevee thing.

I know. The whole Oddish debacle shows that the prospect of keeping final space open was actually pretty poor prospect with ability to catch Lapras so far away, never mind the fact that Lapras strategy mandates crossing THE SPINNING ROCKET FLOORS OF DOOM. Might as well grab the final spot with pokemon that actually have chance of becoming good.

Eevee just arrived at wrong time at wrong place, and made a convenient scapegoat for all the disasters that followed from sudden expansion of choice. This false prophet travesty wouldn't even have happened if we grabbed the pokemon right after arriving at the Celdaon.
