 had 4 min more to go. it's just pretty damn hard to survive as a melee in the flame sentinels level. in my case i died from a 2 flame sentinels after getting shocked from those shock nova type enemy. but i'm doing fairly well. i started 4 min later again cuz i died to void bearers first try, lol. also i almost died to dischargers again; man they're a pain even with decent lightning res. well, they're avoidable but in that level there's mass of them. 3rd mara, #24, not too shabby. could maybe have reached 19 without dying, not sure if 2nd place was in reach. it's just so so hard to survive; that's also why so many ppl die in the ladder, despite them playing lots of races. edit: guess someone deleted his char (too) shortly after the race ended, so i'm actually 23th now. but i know from myself that it's not true, i did the same once, deleted shortly after it ended (still got the points though) edit2: also, this time i realized how important it is to find blue packs.... jesus, i thought i was doing much better than the race where i got lvl 19, as i almost had finished the flame sentinels level. but i didn't find many blue packs whereas i remember lots of them the other day. | ||

And yeah, the monster density/rarity varies a LOT in this race. Sometimes I find rooms after rooms of clustered packs of mobs/blues, and sometimes there's only 3-4 monkeys per area and it's barely worth stopping for them. The number of exploding minions in the Abyss is also a huge RNG. Some run there's mostly those little buggers that spit at you, aka free XP, and other times there are entire rooms of sploders + spawners, and if you don't have the DPS, you basically lost one level on your run. Also, getting flame shamans in the goat level is much harder than their lightning counterpart for a Ranger. Molten Shell is insane, and fireballs actually hurt. Somehow it seems like the monster type is rolled once when you get in in this race, Diablo 1 style. | ||

I had to relog twice too. Close calls. Got frozen by both Merveil Chosens and the boss in the ele skeletons map (the one with the cold aura). Didn't wanna skip the boss as it was surrounded by ~10 blue skeletons. Also as mara i kind of like the goat level. But i try to skip the fire casters (if there is more than two) and also the boss sometimes, the detonate dead is pretty deadly (died there once). | ||

I died to her on my reroll. I was fighting monsters in a room, and she just ran in and exploded a rare for instant death. I was obviously careless due to it being a reroll, but I'm not sure I could have avoided it without specifically looking at the map and guessing that this is her area and simply running through. Chatters (freeze skeleton) is always out of sync, I'm not sure it's worth killing either. He'll never swing at you, you'll simply warp back to him eventually :-/ | ||

But in lower prison in normal races i agree to always skip him. As long as i can leap in and out (and repeat that until he's alone) i feel like he is no problem, but perhaps i was lucky so far. Anyway i feel like you can't skip much starting the ape level, i try to kill as much as possible. If you don't you'll be behind a lot in levels and it's getting pretty hard later. | ||

I get quite some awesome loot from them, pretty much only skipping the Necro and the big guy in area 2 if he's surrounded by LMP Voidbears. Random fun thing I discovered by accident: you can run past the end boss in the statue level and then kill her on the small bridge leading to the exit without anyone else there being able to touch you. | ||

I usually kill Sawbones, pretty easy with RoA, but never got anything out of it. Alira is way too dangerous to engage and drops crap. Spinner is pretty easy and can drop a rare long bow so you have to take that chance, Statue takes too long to kill but I usually do it anyway, just in case it drops a lvl 13 quiver I can alch. Merveil is OP, and Chatters desyncs. What's annoying as a Ranger is that if you do have damage, everything is worth killing, which usually improves your life/damage further, and it snowballs from there. But if you ever fall below a certain damage threshold (or never find any dmg), you can't engage anything because you run out of mana and you die in 3-4 hits. | ||

The necro boss is really easy for Mara if you find a suitable 2 handed weapon before and picked Sweep. To Pwere: True, at that point i had like 350 HP i think. And also probably around 30 cold res from gear (not from skillpoints yet). | ||

Map rolling has a very high skill cap. Every map needs different mods. If you use a shitload of currency and roll maps well, then lots of the RNG is taken out. You do still need a group to fund the currency for the 73+ maze maps. Sometimes they take an exalt per maze, but usually it is around 8 chaos. Exalts cost a lot more because they are the easiest to hoard and trade. People are going for perfect items. On HC exalts are 1:30 chaos but I hear it is really bad on softcore. | ||

I got to lvl 17 in the last descent race with a ranger and it wasn't very difficult at all, I could have easily placed much higher, but it was my first descent with ranger and I heard everyone say how bad they are so I though I would have to take it slow. Well, I shouldn't have. I could have easily made lvl 19-20 had I not listened to all the people saying rangers are weak. Once you get rain of arrows and 2 iron rings you pretty much 2 shot any mob pack. stack some life gear and you are good to go. Just take perfect aim and greater impact key nodes with all the +atk speed and +phys damage nodes nearby and if you have a semi-decent bow you'll be one shoting most mob packs later on, only problem is finding a decent bow, but if you get a decent bow (and with all the alchs that's definitely a possibility) ranger is pretty much beast. Most of my clanmates I talk to that play ranger just run around with crappy crude bows at lvl 10, they don't pick up long bows and alch them, which is the biggest mistake most ranger players make. often times a white long bow does significantly more damage than a rare crude bow and in some cases even a short bow( depending on rolls). long bows have insane flat phys damage, sure they attack a little slower, but with all the +% phys damage nodes you get on ranger you can easily have 100dps at lvl 10-12. edit: just look at top 3 per class, this confirms exactly what I'm saying.
