I'm gonna play Poison because I don't like RoA. I didn't have any problems with weapon or armor drops yesterday; just flasks and jewelry. Farming the spider level should give decent odds of getting a +1 bow as well I hope.
Grab all damage passives and hope for movespeed boots.
Can't decide if I want to do that or go straight down for Thick Skin through the movespeed nodes. Definitely gonna take the medium flasks instead of quicksilver since Ranger doesn't have an easy regen node.

I think you might be on to something. If you don't care about your weapon damage, you can also grab the very good defensive gear in the 9th Curious chest, and alch the boots. Granted, that should be 50 minutes in, but it's a lot of survivability.

I usually go naked until Brutus, but in Descent that would probably be the spider zone, to deal with flicker strike. But any rare chest is usually worth it early on. You don't care about 4% MS if you can simply run through stuff =)
I think this is my plan now: + Show Spoiler +Ranger, run through the first level. 1st Chests: Alluring (Quicksilvers) Run through the second level. 2nd: Curious (PA) Clear level 3-4-5 to be ready for Statues and Frozen. Transmute/Chance every bow until +1 gem level. Then same for boots until movespeed. 3rd: Alluring if no coral ring, Curious if no short bow+quiver 4th: Curious if no coral/decent amulet, Alluring (2x alch) otherwise 5th: Alluring (Hatred) 6th: Alluring (Fork) 7th: Curious (Alch + Chaos) 8th: Curious (Alch, Chaos, Large Life) 9th: Curious (Evasion gear) Edit: I played with RoA a bit more, and I really like it for clearing packs. However, PA is simply better for bosses, and would make a huge difference vs Merveil. RoA requires a pretty good longbow, while PA requires a +1 gem shortbow. Both benefit tremendously from MS boots, and both require a lot of mana but very little life.

He has been hard at working updating all day.

I'm wondering if it is even worthwhile to kill the bosses. They have guaranteed rare drops, but they often aren't useful.

Probably not, for anything past the Weaver. Merveil, Chatters, Perpetus, Giant Statue.. they all suck to kill as an underleveled Ranger. Edit: Bleh, RoA is lvl 4, meaning that you still have to clear the 2nd zone with split arrow to use it. PA is lvl 2, so you save a lot of time if you go PA and skip both zones entirely.

You should try out RoA so we can compare
Wait which one is which. I have conflicting information ^_^ That post on the official forums has RoA and PA opposite.

I think everyone and his mother is going RoA. Lots of disappointments will be had when they realise they have to grind 3 levels with split arrow. I'll try RoA if I roll a magic bow with any form of damage, so clearing stuff with Split Arrow isn't a complete waste of time. ps. I'm pretty sure that RoA is Curious.

All of those witch blanks are pretty amusing.
Edit: I know why though. Died to Chosen even with superior frost nova and an EASY clear of the statues, with a dispel chilled flask no less. Apparently my witch preferred nova pointlessly to taking a sip.

Got destroyed trying to run through the statue level ^_^ RIP level 9, overfarmed still died Even got a quality poison arrow from the chest although not much else in the way of drops.
|
Ripped at level 12 32 minutes in. :/ First cruel level again
|
Died at level 12 like a scrub in today's Descent. Merv cave exploders. =(

Got amazing cleaver items.. if I had been a duelist I woulda done amazing, but meh, was marauder. Thousand ribbons bit underrated for a leap slammer.... had a 1-14 lightning coral as well. attack speed gloves, died at lvl 16 in the vaal ruins zone
|
Got gibbed in Vaal ruins as well, level 16.
Duelist cleaver, had double rare weapons, 10% MS rare boots, rare coral ring, unique gloves. Was MURDERING with hatred + added fire cleave. Two A3 teleport things gibbed me, both put shock and I died instantly. Was the lamest thing ever. Finished @ 133, could've easily cracked top 100 or even 50, I died with 6 minutes remaining.

Ended up lvl 15. My gear is worse than a normal 1h run. Still using the blue shortbow I crafted from the 3rd chest, and I killed all the bosses + rares I met. Not a single useful rare/gem or currency drop. And I had 17% MF basically the entire race =)
I ended up using PA, but I think RoA might be the way to go simply because of that statue level. Too much desync to run through it, and they all resist chaos. That ice level is also a massive waste of time. Not sure what to do there.
ps. I want to play another one now... This race is insane.

Is that bow actually ilvl9?

Probably not, but I had a three transmutes at that point, and you can't get a lvl 9 bow drop before the 5th area, unless you get it from a rare/unique (good luck with that).

In retrospect that is probably why I cleared so slowly at the start. I used the starting bow until the level 9 area where I transmuted/alched six bows and still didn't get gem level
How did you end up skilling? I felt like my movespeed rush was way to squishy, although I'm not sure taking the evasion nodes would actually do me much good. I guess that gets me some health nodes quite a bit faster at least.

Wow, that was interesting. I found a GCP and a 50% Blackgleam off of the first boss. And later found a regret. I wasnt playing a Ranger,(Was playing a duelist) so that was probably some of the most high value useless stuff I could have found. Lol.
I ended up dying a little more than 40 minutes in. Was level 10, at 99% in the Cruel frost cave thing, got to the daughter and she instantly froze me, had no pots and everything around me was at about 1/3rd hp left after my one cleave. If I could have gotten one more hit in i'm pretty sure I would have lived because my hp would have gone to full and my pots would have refilled, but whatever, it happens. Lol. Got 3 points. Was only my first race, and I've never played a Duelist so I was pretty happy with how I did.
How did you guys do?
