What is Mafia?
Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.

It's quite simple, actually. You will be given a single role, of which some exciting examples are shown below:
TOWNIE:
You are a normal townie. Your goal is to survive and help town discover and kill the mafia and Assassins. You have a single vote by day, and the power of hiding in your closet and wetting yourself at night.
MEDIC:
You never really finished med school, but you do have a defibrillator and a first-aid kit! You may choose to visit one person every night. If you visit them and they are hit, you can use your defibrillator to revive them and your first-aid kit to patch them up. You can only block one hit, so stacked hits will still kill them. You may not protect yourself, as nobody has ever mastered the difficult art of defibrillating themselves once dead (hell, even James Bond had to get someone to do it for him).
VETERAN:
You spent a lot of time on the cold, hard streets. Your street-smarts and general badass nature make it very tough to kill you, thus it takes a total of 2 hits to kill you instead of one. You will be notified when you lose your “extra life”. If you take 2 hits in one night for whatever reason, you will still be killed.
MAFIA ROLEBLOCKER:
Your experiments with various controlled substances have produced the hottest new drug that's about to hit the black market: tdotium. This drug is so powerful of a psychoactive, it actually causes people to believe they've been transported to a magical land called Rainbow Rumpus Partytown, where the mushrooms are made of cake and you can ride ponies all night long. You've decided to put this drug to work to help the rest of your organization gain control of TLHQ. You may visit one person per night and slip a dose of your drug into their food. They will be far too drugged-out to do anything that night, so they will not perform their normal night-action. They will be informed that they were drugged-out as shit the next morning (sadly, your drug does not impair their memory). Being drugged-out does not prevent a Veteran from being a stone-cold badass, so he still takes 2 hits to kill.
Many roles have special powers, but not all do. The full role list can be found in the Mafia subforum, there are plenty of fun ones.
Wait a minute. Is this some kind of stupid roleplaying bullshit?
Not at all, unless you want it to be. There will be a backstory and setup, but it is purely there for flavor. You don't have to pretend to be an elf or a clown or a whatever - the focus is on catching those sneaky mafia (or avoiding getting caught!)

Ok, so you will have your role. Regardless of your role, you will have an overarching objective: If you're town, you want to find and lynch the mafia as quickly as possible. If you're mafia, you'll want to avoid detection as long as possible and sneakily murder the crap out of townies at nighttime. There might even be a third party, lurking in the shadows, with their own separate win condition...
Mafia will know who their teammates are (organized crime is organized). Town, however, will not know the roles of anyone besides themselves! The goal of the game is to learn to read people and find out who's trustworthy, and who's a scum in disguise.
The game is split into day and night cycles. During the day, the town gets to discuss the happenings and decide who they think is the shadiest out of them all. They then vote on who to lynch, and that player is removed from the game. In a very short, violent fashion.
During the night, roles with special powers may use those powers (for good or ill), and the mafia gets to run around partying snappin' necks like it's 1999. In other words, the mafia will send in a hit-list, and barring external events, everyone on the list will get, well, hit. With a hammer. Hard.
In the end, one of the two parties will emerge the victor - either all the mafia will meet their end by mob justice, or the mafia will successfully avoid detection and pick the town off one by one.

Don't worry, it's actually very easy once you start playing. There are a lot of veteran players already signed up who are more than happy to guide you through the first couple days - just follow their lead! Also, the Mafia subforum has many old games archived that you can peruse through if you choose. Some of them are actually quite entertaining reads, and you can get a taste of what will be expected of you.

First, you have to request access to the mafia forum. In case you missed the link earlier, I'll put it here:
Just post in that thread saying something along the lines of "May I please have access to the Mafia forum?" and one of TL's friendly mods will be happy to oblige. Once you have access, go to the mafia forum and find the TL Mafia XXXVIII thread, where you can sign up at your leisure. At the time of writing this, there are about 18 slots still open, and they are on a first-come, first-served basis, so hurry if you want in!
I don't want to play, but I'd like to read along and watch! Is that cool?
Absolutely! Just request mafia forum access, and you'll be able to read along at your leisure. We do ask that you please not post in the thread if you are not playing though - it can ruin the spirit of the game, which is never fun!

We dont carry grudges, I've had a player backstab me in game, and proceeded to spend that night talking with him about GSL on AIM

As long as you keep your posts focused on the other posts (and not the people playing), you won't have a problem. Pretty much the only ways to make enemies outside of the game is by throwing personal insults at someone else on the forum or by cheating. Screwing each other over in the game is just part of how the game is played and nobody takes that seriously.

Actually playing mafia is a great way to meet people at tl, once the game ends and the veil is lifted, everyone is back to friends.
And there is noting like bringing the torches and pitchforks for a huge bandwagon to lynch some scum

Also nothing like the gutwrenching feeling of leading the lynch on someone that flips green .

By the way, for anyone who is considering Forum Mafia and isn't sure where to start, this game is a great choice for your first game. It's a relatively normal setup with standard roles, so it will give you a good base of experience to start your Forum Mafia career.
