This topic is to inform you of your opportunity to witness one of the greatest video competitions of the 21st century. On Friday, Jul 16 1:00am GMT (GMT+00:00), the world's three greatest Mario players of all time will be clashing in a head-to-head duel--winner takes all. Each of the three champions will be streaming his play live via livestream.com, and expert commentary will be provided by our resident Mario analyst.
The competition itself is straightforward enough: the three champions will each play SMB3X, a hacked version of Super Mario World, for three hours nonstop beginning at 9:00 PM and ending at midnight. Whichever player has advanced farthest in the game at that time will be declared the champion. Should a player at any time actually finish the entire game, he will be immediately declared the winner and the competition will end.
Here's a little information about each of the champions:
LordOfDabu--Dabu is a legend in the GameFAQs community, having contributed much to the site both as a moderator and a content contributor. Though his skills are rapidly deteriorating as he approaches age 30, as the oldest of the three champions, he has enormous experience in the world of Mario. He will also draw on his extensive knowledge of all video games as he attempts to prove that he's still got it. Many consider Dabu to be the favorite in this competition due to his incredible brain, which is more than three pounds heavier than an average human brain.
SSJ4Sonic--Sonic has proven himself time again in various Starcraft competitions. He's also renowned for an uncanny ability to become expert-level at any game in a very short time. A three time Go world champion, Sonic looks to expand his domination to the platforming genre in this Mario competition. No stranger to the series, Sonic is one of only four people in the entire world who can truthfully claim to have completed every official Mario game in existence with a 100% completion ratio--all done with only one hand. Though he hasn't received the same hype as Dabu, one would have to be a fool to count Sonic out.
Snowster_SC--Snow, disappointed by a runner-up performance in the 2010 GameFAQs Starcraft Ladder, is looking to prove that he has what it takes to be number one. The winner of several Mario tournaments during his youth, it's rumored that when Mario 64 was released, at the age of 8, Snow completed the entire game and collected all 120 stars without dying once. As the youngest of the competitors, Snow hopes that his young, able body and quick reflexes will aid him in bringing home the gold. Snow is renowned by all as a fierce competitor, but a recent poll shows that most consider him to be the underdog in this competition.
Live coverage of the event from start to finish can be found at
A little bit about our commentator, GoShox--While many kids get a bicycle or a skateboard for their 5th birthday, Shox's parents simply gave him a microphone. The arrow to his bow, Shox found a natural gift for commentating on just about anything he came across, be it sports matches, horse racing, dog fighting, and even beauty pageants. It soon came to pass that it was rarer for Shox NOT to have a microphone in his hand, and whenever he opens his mouth, people listen to his velvety voice with wide-eyed adoration.
Be sure to tune in at 9:00 to witness this once in a lifetime event!
Sonic has decided to keep his real name confidential due to prior incidents with fans. It should also be noted that some of the players' biographies may have been slightly embellished.

LordofDabu is going to cheat by playing the game in advance. And he's still going to lose
hahahaha. Wait, this is actually a real thing? I thought this was an Evo parody post emulating The Wizard at first. Definitely tuning into this should the opportunity arise.
As self-proclaimed expert Mario players, we've played all the Mario games already. We had a long and serious discussion about what game should be played. We decided that playing a game we already know is just reducing it to memory and not necessarily real Mario skill, so it'd be better to go into new uncharted territory.
Gonna echo the earlier posts asking if BSB is still around somewhere. It was my first game community and I remember being incredibly annoying and immature at 12-13 but there still being people nice enough to not only put up with me but include me in customs/obs games. If it's still around now it would be where I'd want to set up shop if chat channels are added to SC2.
Will try to tune into the stream if I'm around too!
Will there be VODs released? It would be interesting to put the videos beside each other in sync after this is over. Snowster, you should add this date tag to your post

To be fair, we aren't playing that game. (Even if we were, we'd be doing all levels, not the minimum required!)
Besides, doing Mario World would be just doing memorization. Do you really think that corresponds to Mario skill? It'd be like saying the people with the fastest Starcraft campaign times are the best Starcraft players!

The videos will already be in sync on Thursday! The commentators stream will have all three streams playing at once on the same screen.
How is Dabu winning the poll? It's so obvious that Snowster_SC is the best player. I bet Dabu is making multiple accounts and voting for himself. What a cheater
That would be enough, but that's too simple for us.
All 3 of us are streaming.
A 4th person is streaming all three streams.
Then a 5th person is streaming the 4th persons stream to add commentary.
If anyone knows any more levels of complications we can add we'd love to hear it.
Oh, and speaking of commentary, if any veteran commentators want to help out, GoShox is willing to do a dual commentary (one person soloing for 3 hours may be a bit much!).
One pre-match interview is up, the other two will be up shortly! This is going to be big, folks. The three competitors are mass gaming various Mario ROM's and will be in top shape by the time of the competition.

Unfortunately, he's not going to be saved by a last minute warp zone this time.
You clearly are delusional old man. If you look at the video you linked, Jimmy never won from the warp, he won from getting the star finish which gave him a 5k bonus.

Really? Never heard of him before.

How the hell did he do that with one hand?
They're probably joking - how would you know that there were only three other people? With the existence of Japan it's probably 3000.
Umm, can someone tell me which stream I'm supposed to watch? Or am I supposed to watch all three of them? Which stream is playing who? Dabu=dabu, snow=snow, goshox=sonic?

I'm watching all of them. And yeah, you've got the names right.

He doesn't seem to know about spin jump though. :p
Or does the mod remove it?
The mod removes it.
Yeah, I hadn't noticed how complete the smb3 conversion was, pretty neat. Is the sliding/inertia still the same as smw? I could never get used to smb3 after playing smw, I always slid off things. :p
After much consideration, I have decided to throw in the towel. As I predicted before the competition, I'm clearly outmatched by both of my fellow competitors. I wish both of them the best of luck during the second half of the competition!
I'm confused. Sonic said in his interview that Snowster's 12 y.o., and Snowster said LordOfDabu, who's close to 30, took his girlfriend. Is this whole event some kind of joke? ) or is it for real? .. edit: Okay some good Mario to see finally, it's fine.
SONIC GETS GAME OVER! He gets sent back to the start of world 4. This puts him only 1 level ahead of Dabu! (Although the ship at the end of world 3 is really long and tough, plus Sonic will have the advantage of having played through the levels in world 4 already.)
Sonic has been stuck on the world 4 ghost house for a long time. Dabu just cleared the world 3 boss (in faster time than Sonic did when he was back there) and is a couple of stages behind Sonic.
Sonic got hit with Game Over at the castle, sending him back to the Ghost House. Dabu beats the castle and moves on to world 5, pretty much securing his victory.
I'm glad to have been a part of the 2010 World Mario Championships as the streamer of the second half. I wasn't fortunate enough to have been able to stream Snow's play, but I am happy nonetheless. Sorry for the stream black outs, ProCaster acting up.
Thanks for watching everyone! Sorry for all of the technical difficulties.. hopefully next time we do something similar we have all the kinks worked out before hand.
If you want to participate in something like this, let us know! It'd be fun to get some competitions going.
The only technical issue that annoyed me was how the commentary was desynced from the video (the one showing both players). At one point they were making comments on Dabu's stream (when they were all hype that he was heading to the end of the ghost house) that were about 15 seconds ahead of the common video stream. So they'd be going "OH MY GOD! Oh he just missed that one... OH NO DABU GOT HIT!" and I'd have no idea what was happening. Eventually I had to open Dabu's stream in another window so that I could keep up with the commentary.
Hey guys! I hope you had as much fun watching as we did playing. I may have been victorious, but Sonic was definitely close enough that it could have gone either way.
Obviously we aren't of the caliber that the original post claims, but I hope everyone knew that.
Sorry for the blue screen. I'm not sure what happened there.
We'll definitely be doing this again for another game!

I actually believed the OP and I thought all three of you were totally random people who didn't visit TL and were renowned worldwide for your epic skills ><
I also thought there would be a HUUUUGE production and a beastly stream and stuff
Really fun event, I was cheering for you both and was on the edge on my seat when I saw you both getting stuck in the ghost level. I wasn't too into competetive Mario until I saw this thread and thus checked some vids on youtube. Seems to be quite fun
On July 12 2010 16:42 Garnet wrote: Go World Champion?? What's his real name?
This is the only news article I could find that even contains the phrase "Go world champion" in realtion to an actual current professional Go competition:
It was serious in the sense that we were really competing to win. We all play Brood War together plus lots of other games. Sonic and I in particular play quite a few Mario rom hacks together over netplay and we die a lot due to latency (ZSNES netplay is like extra high lat) so we always joke about how bad the other one is. One day Snowster was watching us play on my stream and convinced himself that he was much better, so we got into an argument about it and decided to have a friendly competition and then discussion about the wizard started and it kind of spiraled out of control from there.

oh my GOD tetris attack is so epic. do it now. me and my friend used to 1v1 on lab computers after chem lab. people would look over and see two asian guys typing away frantically on the same keyboard being really fucking intense. god that was the shit.
I think some of the appeal was picking a game no one's played, so that the players are on their feet.
Tetris attack is a fantastic game though. I'd love to see competitive panel swapping. Unfortunately, I don't think it'd be as good as it could be over netplay unless someone comes up with a way to have lan latency on ZSNES.
