Starcraft Playback: Week 1
by semioldguy
TeamLiquid: Final Edits

Welcome to the first issue of Starcraft Playback. Starcraft Playback will be filling the hole left by Starcraft TiVo, with a few changes. The installment will still be weekly, or at least nearly weekly. It will still list the best games of the week, though will be focusing on providing less games than before and spotlighting only the very best of recent matches. Also each game listed here will be provided with a short description and end with some thoughts about the week in general.

Shinhan Proleague Playoffs: Round 2
Saturday, January 19, 2008

MBC Game vs CJ Entus Game 2 - Pusan vs Kwanro on Baekmagoji
TLPD VOD
+ Show Spoiler +
The lack of quality games in the last week have caused me to reach a little further back in providing exciting games. Pusan's only gateway is part of the wall at his choke. Kwanro makes use of the neutral creep to offensive sunken the wall with zergling support while Pusan tries getting cannons up to desperately defend. A short game, but the impulsive build by Kwanro makes it worth watching.

MBC Game vs CJ Entus Game 5 - Hyun vs Much on Blue Storm
TLPD VOD
+ Show Spoiler +
CJ has their back against the wall as their captain fights for their comeback. Much seems to be at a slight disadvantage for much of the game, but with a few moments of impeccable timing and an amazing use of psionic storms he is able to repel Hyun's attacks as the players move toward the endgame. Much eventually presses his slight advantage into a nail biter victory.

MBC Game vs CJ Entus Game 7 - Sea vs Darkelf on Python
TLPD VOD
+ Show Spoiler +
In this rematch of the first game of the series Darkelf uses an aggressive and unique build order that throws Sea off guard. It was a build that Darkelf prepared for non-opposite positions as he scouts across the map first to determine his next steps. Darkelf moves in at just the right time and with micro, and perhaps a little bit of luck, CJ's Ace completes one of Proleague's best comebacks.

Bacchus OSL: Round of 16
Friday, January 25, 2008

Day 4 Group D - Much vs Frozean on Troy
YouTube VOD
+ Show Spoiler +
I hesitate to recommend this game except that there really wasn't anything better. This game is not here for the entertainment factor, though it is more so than most of the chaff that came out of this week. With the new map we see both players emerge with interesting build orders and play styles. A Terran better than Frozean would have likely provided a better game while Much, the far superior player, turns the map into islands to deny Frozean of metal mobility.

Shinhan Proleague Finals
Sunday, January 27, 2008

Lecaf OZ vs CJ Entus Game 3 - Bright/Dongrae vs Savior/Xellos on Seongangil
YouTube VOD
+ Show Spoiler +
The Finals matches were overall a weak set of games. Xellos is the true savior of CJ for this 2v2 match. With Savior getting cut from his gas for a bit and falling behind early, Xellos takes advantage of his superior build order to Dongrae's in harassing the opponent Terran and keeping Bright from being able to get fully back into the game. Xellos keeps the pressure on for a long time, forcing Lecaf to stay on the defensive in what is very nearly a 1v2 battle.

This was sort of a disappointing week as far as game quality went, making this inaugural issue a little short. The OSL games have been mostly boring, short and one-sided, with a side helping of controversy on the July vs Bisu game. The MSL was slightly less bland, but nothing special this week and lets just say the proleague finals didn't quite meet expectations. Hopefully the coming week will provide more entertainment. If you find yourself still hungering for more good games, check out the revitalized replay section. {88}iNcontroL is a new, and active, uploader. Watch some of the reps he has uploaded and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

kickass i love these things

wow i love the english commentary and wow id just like to say the quality of english from people from non-english-speaking countries on this website is just unbelievable!
"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"

fusionsdf and I should be alternating weeks on this.

Also, I was curious about what people think of the writeups. I didn't want to make them too detailed or long so that people who might want to watch could quickly get an idea of what sort of game they were going to see without knowing everything that happens in the game. Any other feedback is also appreciated.

That's exactly what I thought when I was reading the descriptions. I have already seen all the games but the write-ups were short but detailed enough to get me interested had I not seen the vods.

Will Haji still do this Tivo?

edit: stupid ass question lol
Shorts down shorts up, BOOM, just like that.

I don't plan on burning out, which is one of the reasons I only intend to do it every other week. And I think this format will be less intensive than haji's was. I won't feel pressured to watch every single game. I'll watch what I already do anyway and then just poke around the live report threads and such to make sure I don't miss something great.

There are some matches which might not be the most exciting but have educational value:
+ Show Spoiler [added recommendations] +
Kal played very solid against Kwanro, who obviously didn't know what to go for (MSL game). Luxury showed how the proper Muta -> Ultra transition could look like, though Xellos got really paranoid on the towers (OSL). And finally there is Jaedong vs. Iris which was one of the "what did Iris wrong" games - Jaedong just had impeccable timing and Iris was bashing his head against the darkswarm wall. Technically he did everything right, but there still weren't the holes which were supposed to be there. (PL finals) Certainly interesting for educational value and shows that Jaedong can play management style just as well as short term harass. edit: of that very game, there was apparently a subtitled version added!

But apart from that, there were so many one sided rape matches.

heh, I didn't even realize that.

and I didn't list the Jaedong game because I just wasn't all that impressed by it. It was essentially over pretty quickly and then drawn out until it actually ended. I don't see how Iris could have gotten back into it, he was making poor decisions and not protecting his army and way too passive. Jaedong was moderately impressive, but he was so far ahead toward the end that even though he got lazy at parts he still didn't have a chance of losing. [edit] that being said, it still wasn't as bad of a game as I might have just made it seem. It was next on my list, it just didn't make the cut.

You can find some FPVods on youtube, but i don't think we have them in the TLPD. Maybe on some korean sites like yaoyaun or something too? I'm not sure. But youtube has some.

I would also recommend the 2v2 between Mania/Jy vs the MBC 2v2 and the savior/nbs 2v2 if you like 2v2 at least a little.

+ Show Spoiler +

The first 2v2 with nbs and SaviOr features a cute build which didn't seal the deal mainly because of nbs decisions. the MBC terran (i think it was Light?) did a nice job holding the 2v2 on his shoulders

The second 2v2 isn't great strategically speaking but the whole playoff depends on a micro battle near the end of the game. Really entertaining to watch hearing the screaming of the fans knowing what was at stake.

The whole MBC vs CJ series was pretty amazing. You should probably just watch it from beginning to end if you haven't.
