[Shinhan Bank Season 2] Pantech Lee Yoonyeol Interview "I want to shatter the Autumn's Legend."

Lee Yoonyeol of Pantech, once again, delighted in the joy of advancing to finals. Roughly a year and a half has passed since he made it to the finals in IOPS Starleague early in the year of 2005. As the champion, Lee Yoonyeol was eliminated in the following league, then roved among preliminaries with criticisms "a Prodigy no more". However, today we were able to fully grasp the concept of perfectionism, and why he is called "The Prodigy" through these matches.

-It's your finals in a year.
▶I am very happy, but I want to suppress it one more time. I want to enjoy this happiness to its full extent after winning the league. Today's matches performed my gameplay to its full potential.

-Your build order in the first set was almost identical(to the opponent).
▶Double command is the constituting build in that map. I watched the replay and found minute differences. Early build order status was in my favor.(*1) As the practices piled up in that map, macro-managing for the mid-late game was more beneficial then to aim for the early game attacks.

-Your micro-controls in second set were scintillating.
▶I successfully penetrated it in practices. But, there were also times when I was denied. Fortunately(but unexpectedly), the opponent's barrack was built close to the entrance, and he seemed a bit disoriented also. The opponent's build order is meant to deny the proxy 8 barrack; mine was 7. It's slightly more fast.

-The moment you assured yourself of victory at the third set.
▶It really was a nerve breaking match. When I scanned the starport, I thought if he was adding Wraiths to the mix, but at that precise moment, four tanks were dropped on the hill(of my front yard expansion). I was perturbed. Bearing the attack earned me the set. Thinking I will have the advantage if I endure it, I focused on defense. The very precise moment when I felt a tiny gap leering its light, and immediately countered with dropship, I assured myself of the victory.

-Did you expect to win by 3:0.
▶I prepared fourth set the most. It was the most distressing set of them all. But, I never thought I would win by 3:0. Lee Byungmin is not an easy foe. I was confident enough to earn the first and/or second set, but did not expect to win by a score of 3:0.

-The Golden Mouse is right in front of your eyes.
▶In PCbangs(*2), I agonized in grinding pain when Lim Yohwan, Choi Yunsung, and Park Sungjoon were challenging the Golden Mouse. I thought 'Will I be able to earn that chance; I have not even made it to the Starleague'. I do not want to let this chance go to waste. I want to get it, and secure it; for the rest of my life.

-You have surely proclaimed your return.
▶I will not let myself to think that I have come back until everyone admits I have. Let they be fans or not, I will push myself to the point where everyone will think "Lee Yoonyeol is the best'.

-You have achieved your 100th match in Ongamenet, and won it.
▶I had no idea. I had many matches in MBCgame, but had relatively fewer records in Ongamenet.

-It is said you had many practice partners.
▶Lee Yungho, Kim Sungjin, Kim Myungsoo, Na Dohyun, Kim Sangwoo helped me. From other teams, Yum Bosung and Ahn Sangwon helped me. Especially Ahn Sangwon helped me a lot. I thank him,

-The opponent you want to fight in the finals.
▶I want to face Oh Youngjong. Not only is he the one who denied Lim Yohwan from acquiring the Golden Mouse, but I have this tremendous eagerness to deny the Autumn's Legend. I rooted for Lim Yohwan in So1 Starleague finals, but having seen Oh Youngjong denying him, the avidity to fight him inflamed. Through many recent practices with Oh Youngjong, I felt he is an exceptional player. I really want to fight him in the finals. This avarice to win is intensifying(this very moment). I want to suffer how potent this jinx labeled Autumn's Legend is. Autumn has passed. I am better when it's cold.(Smile)

=================================
Bits and bits of interviews/answers from other news not overlapping with the one above(from FiFo).
=================================

- Who would you want to be your opponent in the Finals between Jun Sangwook, and Oh Youngjong?

"I want Oh Youngjong to be the opponent. Last year, when Lim Yohwan was challenging the Golden Mouse, the opponent was Oh Youngjong. My heart pounded watching that game. I had thought Lim Yohwan would win the league and earn the Golden Mouse, and thus the "Era of Lim Yohwan" would once again embark. Although, I witnessed him coming back from 0-2 to 2-2, and thought he was magnificent, he did not win the league and I felt at a loss.

I became a close acquaintance with Oh Youngjong while helping each other out in practices; He is an exceptional player no doubt, but also I felt that he has this extreme desire to win. I always told him that we should meet in the finals. And, I want to experience for myself how strong the power of Autumn's Legend is."

-Your resolution as a finalist.

"As I have said it in Superfight press conference, now is the most important period of time in my life. I can't miss this chance. And, I don't want to miss this chance. I will strive to the point where I can instinctively feel what a match, that has been played to the very limit, is."
=================
Early build order status was in my favor.(*1) - As you have seen in the first set, the early build order in Alkanoid for both players is almost identical. However, Lee Yoonyeol says there were slight differences and he had a little advantage. This result is derived from the mining controls of workers in the early game. I am not sure whether this topic has been discussed in TL, but to those who are not aware of it, the progamers control their workers to mine minerals more quickly by coordination of minimizing the distance/time the worker needs to get to a lump of mineral. For example, when multiple scvs are ordered to mine lumps of mineral there are incidences where scvs hold still for a short amount of time; usually because another scv started to mine while the previous one was bringing back the mineral to the command center, and is looking for a new empty mineral to mine. There are also many other cases, often very minute, when scv haults for a split second. And, progamers manually control to avoid these standstills. Just to be more obvious, I am not talking about splitting 4 worker in the beginning, or rallying the cc for next worker to a close mineral. We all do that. The progamers micro-control the workers until he no longer can/will, or where the effect becomes negligible. Basically, when there isn't a battle to be fought(requiring excessive micro-control), the progamers are controlling their workers to mine! And, the advantage that Lee Yoonyeol is talking about is resulted from that worker control. (Not necessarily saying that Goodfriend did not perform the same control, but Nada was more meticulous.) This is somewhat a spoiler to some of you because witnessing the gamer's worker control in the vods for the first time without previously knowing it, is just jaw-dropping, like "Did he just do that on purpose???".

PCbangs(*2) - Internet cafe in Korea. Most preliminaries are held in one of specified PCbangs.

Sweet translation rinizim. December's CJ Superfight should show a strong OSL candidate in Anytime, Midas, and of course NaDa. The potential MSL winners are Nal_rA, sAviOr, and SiLvEr.

CJ Matchups I think would be money:
Anytime vs Nal_rA - New Toss vs Old Toss
Midas vs sAviOr - Rematch of their semifinals in Pringles 1 MSL
NaDa vs anyone would be good. Simply because NaDa is on fire right now.
Do your best, God will do the rest.

Nada is confident but he is also driven like hell. I think he may be underestimating the brackets the others had to face though... I dunno ...
Either way, this OSL was very awesome.

Next OSL, Casy will come back and dominate.

We actually just discussed mining micro recently in the strategy forum. You can find that thread here:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=45655

The first time I realized that progamers were not simply spamming but actually controlling individual workers was when I watch rA do it. Mora and I just about creamed.

I think everybody is rooting for Anytime in this next semi finals, simply because the storylines going into the finals would be immense, and lets face it, TvP is more interesting than TvT (even though I enjoy TvT, there is just too much of it).

That being said, Midas has practiced 30 hours a day for these matches, and I doubt he will be denied a shot at the title. Then we will see baby bear's face crack.

Exactly. The storyline is like...
I mean the story itself is becoming a mythical legend. Intense.

There is a remark in Korea about the two major Starleauges.

-The overpowering dominance wins MBCgame league, and
winner of Starleague is predestined by god.-

'By god' is 'by sky' if literally translated, just indicating a force of higher power than human being, not necessarily meaning 'the God'. But anyways, that remark was spread with the prevaling notion that OSL is somewhat always dramatic, and its storyline addictingly enticing. I am too lazy to mention all the past OSL incidences, but when OSL reaches the semi's, it's big bang every single match. Why, there are some people jokingly accusing that Ongamenet fixes the match up's and forces progamers into acting lessons everyweek. Funny stuff.

Anyways, when it comes to the semi... and when it's Anytime vs Midas....
I personally just love baby beeeaaaaaar....... but for the good of all it's like having visions... of Anytime beating Midas, and Midas crying... and me crying

It's either really a legend manipulated by ancient mythical power of some sort,
or simply by ongamenet's fine acting teachers and writers. hehe.
===

Ah the strategy section was overlooked. No wonder.

My GOD rinizim, you are a freaking machine. VOD + interview?! I'm being spoiled!

Edit: The quality of your interview translations are of the highest caliber. Even though I don't know Korean, I can see that you have a strong English vocabulary, so I'm more confident that there's not much being lost in translation. If that weren't enough, the personal comments you provide are insightful, spot-on and unintrusive. Between these and your unfailing VOD uploading, I feel you're covering all the bases.
Perfect. Plays low-econ, high-econ, plays orthodox, plays funky, plays Mozart, plays Run-DMC. Micro, macro, strategy, management, fundamentals, and balls the size of Brazil. He plays Zerg the way the Xel Naga intended - like a ball of mercury. -HonestTea

If Midas beats Anytime OSL is over. Easy win for Nada. From those two, anytime is the one with more chances to steal a couple of games from nada, therefore going to a very last game where everything can happen. Anytime has already been there, and against none other than boxer, it being his first OSL appearence. Midas has reached the semis for the first time in his life and he doesnt stand a chance TvT vs Nada. Yeah he beated Iris[gm]. And no, i wont say he played bad, cause its Iris who didnt played as good as he is supposed to be TvT.
And a toss in the final is needed for the Autumn Legend to continue to grow.
That said, i dont see a clear favorite between midas and anytime.

The first time I realized that progamers were not simply spamming but actually controlling individual workers was when I watch rA do it. Mora and I just about creamed.

Was that a first person vod or normal observer-view? Is it obvious to you that Nada is doing this in the first game? I don't see it, maybe I'm just noob that way

If you can't dig up that vod you mentioned, please name a game where it's obvious or kindly explain what to look for.

I don't think it can be called 'freewin' if midas beats anytime

midas is very very strong.

[edit] does someone have the same impression as mine, that, when iloveoov wants, he is untoucheably the best? like no toss and no terran can beat him?

Thanks for the translation!

Will we see the return of the total dominance that Nada brought several years ago?

A Nada vs Anytime finals would be great . Midas just doesn't have anything spectacular, in my opinion. Nada is an ex-best player in the world, and Anytime won the first OSL he participated in, defeating Boxer of all people. As for Midas... . Well who knows, maybe Midas will make this OSL finals his spectacular moment in progaming . If he beats both Anytime AND Nada, I'd certainly be surprised!

This is starting to make me want to start downloading VODs for once...

Yeah and having Anytime himself as a Golden Mouse candidate would be truly insane.
Then of course, he too could never get it... but wow.. in 3 years, Anytime adds to his Golden Mouse candidacy.
