If you didn't hear about this guy until today, here's why.
WhiteRa got DQ'd. He was supposed to play against gimix. They met up again in the bracket today. Gimix types" Let's do this the right way". Throws all his SCV's at WhiteRa 2 games in a row. He did that so they'd be tied in their extended series, to make it fair
SLOW FUCKING CLAP
Edit: Unfortunately, WhiteRa defeated Gimix 4-2, which is probably as it should be
Edit: Added some games that are quite good
BIG BIG BIG <3'S TO YOU GIMIX. THE NOBLEST OF ALL TERRANS Real name is Stephen Biesel
Only known image of Gimix, from his game against White-Ra
MLG: Incredible story coming out of the Open Bracket: Epgimix, the player who White-Ra DQ'd to yesterday, is playing him now. Before the start of the first game, in the pregame chat, Gimix said to White-Ra, "let's do this the right way."
He then proceeded to throw all his SCVs at White-Ra in the first game, and then in the second game. Obviously, he lost both games. The series is now back even at 2-2 and has essentially been reset.
Add me. After nearly a year of lurking TL, this is the first fan club I have joined. I've had favorite players before, but none of them inspire the admiration of Gimix. This guy could teach even SHETH some manners! Gimix fighting! (hell I even kind of hope he beats Whitera now)!
Gimix is a great player who was high up on the GM ladder, and may have been able to win when he only had to win 2 games while Ra needed 3 if he was lucky, so he pretty much gave up his chance of winning to be Good Mannered, sign me up! <3 Gimix
When I first heard this.. I asked myself would I do this if I was in Gimix's shoes? Hell no. I would have taken advantage of it because I'm a SOB. With that said: You are better than I, Gimix.
I don't get it, how is it mannered to throw games because White-Ra's "supposed" to advance? Yeah White-Ra's better, but it's more manner to play the games out than to say "you're better than me and deserve to advance"
Maybe there's more to the story and OP didn't explain everything.
Yeah, this guy is pretty rad. Really respect his decision, especially since he probably knew White Ra would win the overall series if he threw two games.

He threw the first two games of the series so that the extended series would be at 2-2, allowing them to play the Bo3 that they were supposed to play originally. Obviously it wasn't Gimix's decision to DQ WhiteRa and he was trying to make the match as fair as possible.
EDIT: To further clarify, as a result of the DQ, Ra was given an automatic 0-2 loss against Gimix and dropped into the Losers Bracket.

Because he wanted to play White-ra on equal terms/footing and being up 2 games despite wanting to play out the winners circle match conflicted with that.
In other words rather than take an advantage over an opponent who was maybe better than him, he decided to make it even.

Guy has balls.
Ah ok cool, maybe edit that into the OP then since it was a bit confusing.

Because extended series is a joke and he is baller enough to metaphorically give the finger to MLG.

Extended series is good but in the case of disqualification its not so great.
A tournament is about finding out who is the better player and if two players 2-0 eachother the second person moves on with the tournament while the first player is eliminated despite being even in wins. That doesn't make sense, thus the best of 7 format for repeats. Otherwise don't have loser's brackets.
In the case of someone who wants to play against someone they look up to or respect or whatever, taking advantage of this is perfectly fine, it was on white-ra to show up on time, but intentionally leveling the score is very manly.

Well done by Gimix. I'm a fan of good mannered people anywhere, whether it be SC or (my 'sport' of choice) Magic the Gathering, and they're not as abundant as they should be.

Yeah he was late beyond the grace period. Sorry but those are the rules. There not even MLG specific rules. GSL has them too, as does many many other tournaments.
But yeah, its not about extended series.
When White-ra is right fucking there and a ref is like "nah man he can't play you" that's irritating.
Hi Team Liquid, I am Team Manager for Clan eP. The clan is very happy with Gimix's sportsmanship in the extended series vs whitera. Clan eP would like to say thank you to the Team Liquid community for your positive comments about Gimix :D <3 TL!!

Sign. me. the. fuck. up.
Gimix stream ASAP.
he does stream i believe i think his stream is justin.tv/pit__
You asked for a picture of ePGimix. This is the best thing I could find, we don't have one ourselves :D He's the one opposite to WhiteRa! This is from whitera's twitter.
Haha it's kind of like Wilson from Home Improvement but for Starcraft
I've met him in person, and played him at a tournament. After my game against him (I lost) he and I talked and he freely discussed the games, I asked him how to defend against his style of play, and asked him a few PvT questions. He answered all my questions and more, one of the nicest, kindest players I know. He's also really, really good.
yea, it's REALLY cool that this guy did what he did, in fact I've been in his situation and i did the exact opposite and took the upper hand
but at then end of the day he was gonna get smashed by ra regardless. I'm not bashing him, i think he did a great thing. I just don't understand why this qualifies for a fanclub.

really impressed by the manner involved here. not something you see every day and if may be so bold I don't believe a Korean-trained player would have done the same thing (please correct me if I am wrong). I think this shows the difference between the West and East as far as competition and doing whatever it takes to win vs doing what is "right".
I have a lot of respect for a guy as honorable as this. I won't join his fanclub, but I do want to note that a guy as mannered and noble as Gimix is a guy worth cheering for.
Sheth, looks like you have competition for "nicest guy in ESPORTS"!
Sure, what he did was honorable and great, kudos to him for that... But does he really deserve his own fan club? I don't think so, praising him over the LR thread or a thread about the situation would have been enough, now this fan club will fall into obscurity in one week Go make a ToD fan club or something... sigh

That's the whole point of this fan club - this isn't exactly a "we love your play" kinda club. This is a beacon - a sign held up high to the rest of the community, of how we, as players, spectators and fans, still believe in a few ideals. The purpose of this thread isn't to last long, but rather to shine brightly, so maybe, just maybe, it'll etch at the back of our heads, and at the right moment spring again.

That's not a fair assessment of the match. You can't say he had no chance, since it wasn't actually played out as an extended series. It's not wise to speak in absolutes.

it's whitera vs some random ladder player, of course he'd win

Yeah, White-Ra is clearly favored, but it's not fair to Gimix to assume that he has no chance at all.
I've said my piece, so I won't press the issue anymore. I just don't really like the attitude of "Oh, Player X is clearly going to demolish Player Y, so Y might as well give up". That's all.
On August 01 2011 00:16 Maliris wrote: it's hardly mannered, he had 0% chance of winning anyway so throwing 2 games was completely inconsequential.
It's actually because he is an underdog that this is even more amazing. If he kept the two games he just needs to hope for two miracles/all ins for himself and none for white ra. By giving up two games, he limits his "miracle" chances.
If a tournament like this where if you can somehow get into pool play or beat a well known player (like white ra!) you can go from no name status to your own fan club, everything is on the line. If it were me against MMA, you bet I would take the two game advantage and cheese every game and hope his keyboard catches on fire and Kespa calls him to forfeit (twice) .
Sign me up, always good to see mannered players in the SC2 community. Especially at these awfully run events. P.S, according to day9, he lost 2-1 (managed to take 1 game off whitera ^_^)

Day9 was wrong. He did not take any games and lost to White-Ra by 2-4.
Nonetheless, he showed great manner and sportsmanship. He deserves respects from the community. Good luck in future tournaments, Gimix!
You didn't need to create a fan club and probably should have just made an appreciation thread because this will die out soon enough and there isn't much you can add to the OP.
Nevertheless awesome guy and it's so cool that he did that

Im sorry but you sir have no idea what you are talking about. Gimix is Top30 NA GM, and with an extended series lead of 2-0 it is entirely reasonable that WhiteRa could have lost the series. Stop being a jackass.
Add me to the Fan club! Once i watched a game where pit didnt kill a zergling, he said "even zerglings have a mommy" Grats on all this stephan ^_^ I ♥ U!
Seems like something every man should do in this situation. Props for realizing that ofc. Are you guys really saying you wouldn't do this? I'd feel ashamed to play from undeserved lead. Then again I completely hate the whole extended series rule so I might have more stronger opinion about situation than average person.

Well decided by him anyway.
Who are you referring to as 'you guys,' everyone who's posted in this thread? (Other than the obnoxious/self-centered ones) I'd do it ten times out of ten in a vacuum, live and with lots of factors, who knows. I over-analyse everything and the 'If I do this then people will think I was just trying to turn a sure loss into some kind of win' angle would have been a serious concern. Doing the right thing regardless of how it might be perceived is often quite difficult.

Some said "I wouldn't have done that" and overall people are considering normal behaviour like only gods would act like that. So yeah, based on the responses it does seem like most wouldn't think throwing 2 games as something that would come up to them in same situation. I don't know, I can't act over-enthuastic about something I'd most likely do myself everytime.
Anyhow didn't mean to bash people for being overly positive when I couldn't Cool act, cool response by scene.
I think the whole WhiteRa thing is completely eclipsing the fact that Gimix beat EG.StrifeCro 2-1 in the winner's bracket. They weren't even cheese, either, they were all straight up macro games!

Dude has some serious talent+Great Manner! Can't wait to see more from him!
this guy was really really really smart. Instead of taking the 2-0 dq lead (which he could of done and tried to cheese out whitera since whitera is the better player) he decided to throw games away knowing he'd lose the series anyway. which obviously got him fans, Smart and noble. But... he probably didn't think people in teamliquid would here about it. Probably just was a fan of whitera to begin with :D
Hmmm... but he did beat StrifeCro 2-1... so wow. I guess he just deserves even more credit then he gets. Might of been able to cheese out WhiteRa if he wanted too. True mannerbears.
Noble fella. We need more white knights in SC2. I was watching him converge with white-ra in that bracket all day. I've not seen him play but he made a hell of a run before "doing it right" sign me up.
It's looking like MLG replays will be released after all at some point too (from SotG), I'll be taking a look.
Sign me up. That story was awesome, and if He Is grandmasters, he does clearly have lots of potential (of course), So I look forward to seeing some of his play as well.

Just found this topic by searching, only to find it had been bumped to... today! Weird.
He was in my division rank 1 for a while and just noticed yesterday that he was no longer there, and I come to see him ranked 2 in GM right away. Weird! Just got promoted and moved up fast, or maybe he was just placed well in GM since his MMR or something.
Regardless, I had no idea he was the player that was with the White-Ra incident at MLG. Props to him. Even though I don't know him, nor am I sure if I've played him recently or at all, his name now has a positive connotation with me :D.
