Kiwikaki has been picked up by the new teamReign. There will be a team house in the Bay Area. Look for a massive improvement in Kiwikaki's wildness! Full story here
This kid has shown some amazing games, and huge promise with his amazing strategies and thought processes. Definately deserves some love from the fans.
NEWS: Still looking for pictures and interviews, if anyone is enough of a kiwihead to have drawn fan art, I'll add it to the OP New Interview from AskJoshy be sure to check it out in the Interviews Section.
Would love to update the "Amazing Games" section, it's still jaw droppingly sick, but I haven't seen very many games from Kiwi recently
Race: Protoss Real Name: Jonathon Garneau Team: Reign Nationality: Canadian Background: Warcraft 3 (Orc) Known For: Creative Play, Use of Motherships (see: SCRI #1 vs. EG.Machine, Day[9] Daily #249) Nicknames: MacGyverToss SC2Ranks.com Profiles: US Profile,EU Profile How he got his name:
Kiwikaki: I found this name by playing 2vs2 in Warcraft III with a friend who’s name was “ElefantVert” (Green Elephant, but in french). I wanted a similar name, so I decided on an animal, a Kiwi, which is a bird from New Zealand. Kaki is another type of green, which I found by asking a Chinese friend for a funny colour in his language. The name stuck with me. source (the ROOT Gaming interview below)

Maybe its because you can't stim/blink Hydralisks into your enemy? Who knows. Maybe because you can't make your ultralisks move up a cliff to get out of the way of your other units? Who knows. Maybe because your units operate between 5 and 3 range with no utility functions at all? Of course for 150/150 you can make that 6 to 3 range. Maybe its because zerg cant create impassable terrain to prevent your opponents ranged army from forming a concave? Who knows. Maybe this mythical micro you envision pro-zergs having doesn't actually exist and when 20 stalkers are bearing down on your natural and you don't have the option to retreat to a forcefielded/blocked off ramp, maybe just maybe attacking with your hydralisks is the best option. Immortal Warp Prism/4 Gate on metal vs Machine...
The epic, epic grudge match on metal vs Morrow that burned through 3 different commentators...
Sign me up! His play is just so different than any other protoss I've seen. I've been following him for quite a while and he seems always ahead of the curve. He uses solid strategies that nobody has seen, and those strategies a ~month later can be seen in the high level korean games.
ive been a fan since his WC3 days playing on mTw, since i was a canadian orc player too, i definitely looked up to him. I remember one season of WC3L when him and Nightwulf completely shit on every 2v2 team out there, even amazing players like Focus and Shy.
Also if someone can find a clip of him talking about Marauders that would be awesome (I've heard it parodied a million times, but never hear him say it
I can suggest a game. The game versus MorroW on Shakuras Plateau in the SCReddit tourney. That game was so sick, literally insane a MUST WATCH not just for Kiwi fans, but fans of SC2

I always loved Athene videos even when I had never played WoW, so naturally when I started Starcraft 2 I quickly became a huge fan of ROOT, and KiWi, with all their "its da skillzzz muthafucka" and "play the gaiimz" references.
I figured KiWi was just a fan of Athene... but to find out that you're friends with Athene, that's freakin awesome, I love you.

Just posted it on Twitter, but man, this guys 21, and he's not really a mass gamer, he's not someone known as much as a liquid tyler for refinement, he's just so talented and has so much game sense, its relaly incredible. That is some serious talent behind Kiwikaki.
Huge fan of KiwiKaki. His multitasking is always perfect and doesn't mess up when there are two battles going on at once. He also doesn't rely on 4 gates and 2 base timing attacks, he just uses completely solid play to outdo his opponents. Would love to see Kiwi take MLG.
Watched u play today kiwi did very well bro keep it up and congrats on the new sponsors for ROOT. Hope u win it all or at least come close. You have innervated Protoss play with mother-ship voidray recall after attack or stalker recall after attack. Just wanna give you the respect you should get GO KIWI beat em all bud.
Lost in the Winner's Bracket Semi Final, knocked down to the Loser's bracket with his first two losses of the tournament if I understand the casters correctly.

Kiwikaki is one of my most exciting players to watch and he seems a cool guy. I was rooting for Kiwi in the finals and was really sad when he lost - but to be fair he did get outplayed by Nani. The 2 games he did take off him were - getting lucky sneaking a pylon inside the base and scouting a pylon in his own base.

I think posts like this should be avoided. If it was any other tournament format kiwi wouldn't have been in the finals at all. Excuses don't make it better
what, why? kiwi didn't lose to anyone in the tourney but naniwa, he can probably beat everybody else that got eliminated before him
I think I've seen his stream a couple times on here... It's too bad because I'd probably be a viewer every day if he streamed and I'm sure he'd get a lot of people watching. Understandable though if he doesn't need the Ad money and wants to keep his strats secretive.

Agreed, but it was worth a shot...looking around for his replays is worth the mild pain since he's so amazing.
Great games against Morrow! You really came off as the better player.
I recall that PvZ used to be your worst match up and you lost a similar series to him in the Reddit Invitational. It's good to know that some people can solve their metagame issues without having to constantly rely on Blizzard.
Of course im in, Kiwikaki fighting!........easily the best mothership user in the world. Kiwi beating IdrA with the mothership in the final of IPLs season 1 was one of the best moments in any SC2 tournament and was truly a moment of hope for all mothership lovers. I had nearly convinced myself that blizz had nerfed my favorite unit to such an extent that i would never see Kiwi or the mutha in an SC2 tourny again but it was like the return of our lord when MLG and IPL came round and there he was, my hero.
If only Blizz didn't take out the nerf hammer every time the saw Kiwi succeeding with new innovative strats. Mothership for hatch snipe with blink stalkers + recall, vortex + muta snipe, archon toilet and void rays with flux vanes vs zerg to name but a few. This combined with hilarious comments and chants with fellow ROOT gamers and the creation of the name "one basey wa" really do come together to make this man my favourite SC2 pro gamer.
Every time Kiwi is in a tourney I end up supporting him no matter who he plays, I cant help myself but the thing that I will always appreciate Kiwi the most for is beating Select in IPL season 1, I never gave up hope and eventually Kiwi came through, this man does not let his fans down and continues to play an entertaining style at the highest level and that is something that I feel deserves respect.
It is about time that i accepted that i am a Kiwi fanboy, time to join the ranks.
On May 07 2011 15:06 ZuRbii wrote: Why haven't I joined this fanclub yet...? Kiwi is definitely my favorite player. No matter what, I always root for him.
Sign me up, I used to not be a big fan of Kiwi's play style but ever since MLG I've been blown away, hes super diverse and looks like he puts loads and loads of time into practicing his builds.
Don't give up. I hope you can create new builds or force effectiveness and stability on existing ones to improve your game. Try to avoid thinking about balance, that isn't going to help.
Anyway, good luck for NASL and IPL S2. I still think you are the best NA Toss.

Ah, a tale indeed.
You see, before Socrates drank the hemlock, he had two Greek forgers (known by most as Razer and Steelseries) - the greatest in all the land, craft such tools, they were left behind intended for his hands only. Of course, many had attempted to spoil the prophecy by using them for evil (probably Zerg players, but one can only speculate), though they themselves would fall victim to its power, a deadly curse beset those who wished to steal Kiwi's rightful heritage.
But you see my friend.... It really doesn't matter what keyboard and mouse he uses, because what will you do with this information? Buy the same as him in the hopes you'll be as good? No sir, BECAUSE YOU CANNOT BUY SKILL, SO STOP LOOKING FOR SHORT-ROUTES TO GETTING BETTER AND START LADDERING.
I'm not trying to "LOOKING FOR SHORT-ROUTES TO GETTING BETTER AND START LADDERING" but a friend of mine is a huge fan of KiWiKaKi so for his birthday which is coming up and he needs some new gaming equipment so I was going to buy it for him.

Take a look at the reports link on the wsop site. He's doing pretty well so far. good luck kiwi !
Not sure if our campaigning on twitter helped, but Kiwikaki is going to be on TV at the WSOP featured table in about 10 minutes!! On ESPN2 (TV) ESPN3 (USA Online) and other restreams listed in this original post http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=243381

Poor Kiwi though, getting eliminated so early!! T_T Is he okay? He his play has been off recently; I've noticed...so unfair he got both Strelok and Nerchio thrown at him first thing too.

WhiteRa 2-0ed PuMa in IEM, I think PuMa went for 1/1/1 and WhiteRa just went 4 g + warp prism and ended the game before terran pushed out. :p

It seems to me, that every time a protoss loses to 111, his "engage" was bad. So either protoss players collectively dont know how to engage, or 111 is simply too strong. Which explanation is more likely?

Probably the engage, to tell the truth, remember the old 3gate vs 4gate? and 4gate use to win 80% of the time? but now magically 3gate variation is > 4gate. Its the same thing. Protoss will learn to engage.

At that interview, I felt like they were both kind of happy, in a way. Even though Kiwi lost in the end; He won what was arguably the best game ever played (and probably messed up the ladder meta-game for the foreseeable future) in SC2 so far, and Stephano was happy because he won the series.
Blizzard; you can nerf the average ladder nub, but goddamnit you can't nerf Kiwikaki.
At one point, Kiwi had a mothership and colossi in a PvP, while his opponent only had colossi. Kiwi did a vortex and spread out his colossi around the vortex in such a way that the splash damage killed everything when the vortex was over. Does anyone know where to find the VOD? And does anyone know who his opponent was??
Sign me up. I remember seeing his name in poker years ago. I've read/heard somewhere that he was going to start streaming, does anyone know if that is true? Also, I see he's born in April of 1989, same as me lol (my names is also Jonathan).
well KiWiKaKi should make a return to competitive gaming at IPL4. Slush too
Dunno if KiWiKaKi will sign with another team since he seems to be focused on poker for now. As for slush, i know he's still looking for the right team.
Been a longtime fan of this guy since 2010. Really enjoyed his play ever since the beta, and I hope he finds a team soon. Still, I take solace in the fact that as a successful poker player, his financial status is probably pretty good.
Ugh. Shame that he got eliminated so quickly in IPL. Hopefully they release replays. It's hard being a fan of Kiwi because we so rarely get a chance to actually see him play.
I Tought we would see some of is games in IPL4, makes me sad cause he is my favorite player period. And i can't seem to find him in GM either I hope we get to see some of is games soon <3

Damn it he was the reason i didnt know much of naniwa, i would always think of that cool toss player kiwi. He plays very nicely, like a whitera with more crazy tactics. Too bad its poker time. But it was fun kiwikaki showed how op voids were buy going sentry void and destroying infinite hydras.
In fact there is always a game that is exemplary of a strat. If you remember the game i just talked about, youll agree it showed why voids were nerfed
I'm pretty sure he'll be back when HotS will be released. I gues the way the game is right now ( 1 or 2 all-ins everywhere, especially as Protoss in PvZ) he jus doesnt enjoy the game very much. I'm losing a bit of interest too becuase of this x_x and really hope HotS will make Protoss a little bit more flexible instead of always being forced to go for HTs or Colossy.
See u in HotS KiWi ;-)
EDIT: He always said he does what he enjoys the most and when Starcraft is no fun anymore for him its ok. I dont wanna see games of KiWi where he's amazingly bored and doesnt even care about if he loses or not ^^ like i said, see you in HotS KiWi =) D3 is a 20 Hour game and u cant make money out of it =) i'm sure you'll be back and poker is fun but gets boring quite fast too like u said once, its easy money :D

Cute that you think it's a 20 hour game And also it does have an real money auction house so it seems pretty possible to make some cash from it

Blizzard: "If a player was to read the lore, interact with the environment, access 80% of the game content then you are looking at 15-20 to complete normal difficult." (http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/jay-wilson-taiwan-press-conference) Of course you can always play longer, and then there's still multiplayer and more difficulty settings, but that's it
To Kiwikaki retiring: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...... T_T

Then of course there are 3 additional difficulties, 5 classes to play, tons of loot, and (eventually) PvP (which I might add looks a lot more fun than SC2 PvP).
HotS won;t make Protoss more flexible, it's just going to break the game for another year until Koreans figure out how to play again.

One of Kiwikaki's greatest strengths was his unorthodox play and his creativity, and with the initial chaos right when HotS is released and everyone is confused by the changes, a player like him can really make lasting impact on the way the game is played. I hope he does come back for the next round
I went to IPL in Vegas and was one of the only people (besides maybe his girlfriend) that was watching Kiwi's games in the Open Bracket room. The next day I got the one signature I wanted.
He almost seemed surprised that I asked for his signature.
Just heard my favorite Protoss was coming back, can't wait to see him play, good luck on the reformed ROOT gaming Kiwi... and get working on a replay pack so I can steal your builds!

I really wish him the best on whatever he is up to right now. I really love SC2 and poker, so double win for KiwiKaki!!! But its a little bit easier to follow him at SC2... MLG... Kiwi and Huk... my first protoss-double-love-at-first-sight
Kiwi has a new fan page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/KiWiKaKi. He didn't have admin rights on the old one and couldn't get in touch with the page creator. Please go "Like" the new page!

We can only hope!
Btw, would be nice if we had an update of the OP. Last update was more than 1 year ago and says he is on ReIGN

Doubtful, he is a very innovative player. He definitely has an upper hand in that he doesn't stream much and does not play conventionally. Streaming his wacky builds would make it easier to play vs him.
Saw the ROOT video for the HotS launch stream and was wondering "where the heck is KiWiKaKi?!?!" Guess all you have to say is "sup dood", I'm hyped! :D
