Madoka's most recent episode just pulled it miles ahead of nearly just about everything else airing this season. Talk about one hell of a development.
+ Show Spoiler +If this episode didn't solidify Kyuubey as an antagonist of sorts, I don't know what does. The whole Mahou Shoujo scheme is definitely not a trustworthy concept in that universe and if Madoka seriously wishes to revive Mami in the next episode, I'm going to label her as one of the biggest anime idiots of all time (though to be fair, it's going to be her heart that does the majority of her decision making anyway, so....).

It's disappointing because 12 eps is hardly a marathon run for me (like TWGOK) and as soon as I start enjoying a short series like that, it's already halfway over.
I marathoned all of baccano which was what 24 eps, and my day is only halfway over, guess it's time to go start Ghost Hunt.

There are plenty of great animes that are 12-14, but half of these seem like they'll only be hitting their stride around the 9-10 mark.

The ED is also fantastic.

Until stated otherwise, all wishes made in order to establish a Magical Girl contract can pretty much be anything/involve anyone: + Show Spoiler +as proven by Sayaka's intentions to make a wish focused on another subject outside of herself. I can easily picture Madoka making such a wish but seeing as how practically nothing is known about Kyuubey, it's hard to imagine just how many strings are attached to any/all of the wishes made with the contractors in that universe.
Also, series that broadcast for 12-13 episodes are alright given that it has a sufficient development pace; Madoka so far is proving to be an immensely excellent example of this sort of mindset, whilst series like Fortune Arterial prove to be an example not to be followed as the pace for developing the plot/characters is severely delayed and not focused on until there's practically not enough time to provide a proper development + conclusion.

There good but as you said most don't pick up till 9-10 when it's about done, I have no problem with the length although I feel that the amount of content the try to pack into such short series doesn't allow for decent character development which is a key to many anime. It's also more so disappointing when animes this short actually feel the need to toss in filler episodes (TWGOK does this 2-3 times) thus cutting into the story even more.
My standard may be to high but I feel that 12-14 eps is not enough to develop a full story + Character development in time. Especially with fillers.
A good example of a 26 ep 2 season anime which prevented this would be Clannad, Season 1 was almost exclusively character development and story progression, maybe a filler or two but still developing characters within the filler. Season 2 was almost directly plot progression, you had a great understanding of all the character's other than the few new ones so they accelerated the plot and made it work (10 year jump through season 2).
Another anime which performs this in 26 episodes would be Claymore, although the ending was drastically screwed with the base plot and character development went perfectly. They introduce you to the main characters, there purpose, then it jumps back and gives the history of the character and her "job" so to speak. It also used this area of slight "filler" eps to introduce the main antagonist's along with much background of future characters instead of just tossing them in front of you.
Again my standards and view of anime story progression may be different but I feel those two since I'm not in the mood to wall-o-text are great representations of how a story should go.
Also for flamers I am not hating on short anime such as TGOWK etc, but merely pointing a flaw I seem to find occur often in anime of there length.
Also yes I know there are even 26+ animes that fail at character development etc.
TL;DR Short animes don't provide enough development especially when they have fillers, Long animes should remain the norm.(Just not zomg naruto, one piece long)

I like that you used Claymore and Clannad as your reference points. Two of my absolute favorites. Character development is probably the most important thing to me in what I watch so I sometimes feel cheated when it's a 12EP with no continuation. After it's over it's over and there is nothing more to that character or to the story then the little information I have been given. That, of course, it's always the case.

I get what you mean, but TGWOK is kind of a bad example in this regard. Yes, the actual arcs progress the story, but they do not provide you with much info about Keima's character. In addition, the filler episodes are actual chapters in the manga, and were aired in the anime in the same spots storywise as they were in the manga.

Claymore is in probably my top 3 anime because it was one of the first I'd seen and it done excellently again besides the ending which wasn't even as bad as most make it seem. It showed excellent character development, action, and drama at times.
Clannad was later into anime for me but from the first episode on it kept me hooked, it again showed that even a somewhat long series (general terms) can perform what I feel are key in anime very well. The first season had me in love with the characters and is really the only anime currently that got any reaction out of me from the drama. Season 2 even more so. Which is why it will always remain at the top of my list.

12Eps anime has fucking defect that be never conquered the defect is [they have no future] some series like Gaiking LOD eventually extend their season most anime can't do this so 12eps anime is mostly for the backup for a next anime or sadly just a fucking cute robber that steel OTAKU's money OTAKU is just a volunteer who give money for anime studio&goods company Oh What a sad story.................

I still don't know why they made Kimi Ni Todoke 12 EPs this season compared to the 24 last. I mean, if they keep making seasons to finish the story then fine, but cutting it in half annoys me.

Really though I'm just bitching to bitch
