Not sure who's fantasy it is to have a character with a bad personality get tortured and experience other dramatic events repeatedly close to the opposite of an godlike MC? Subaru will eventually succeed, but he does so after a lot of disturbing failures.
Everyone is saying Rem is best girl, but this is also the girl that killed him when he was already going to die of a curse because she was suspicious of Subaru. rezero+ Show Spoiler +I dont think anyone would realistically be calm when you know everyone you care about is going to die, your powerless to stop it, and people are refusing to help you. If he just started out being a pro negotiator at this stressful time that would be really out of place, Im pretty sure he will take lessions to heart though. Also I dont really get the fantasty bit. Stories don't have to be wishfulliment if im reading the second paragraph right.

I feel like the current ReZero arc is awful. Subaru was a little bit slow in the first 2 arcs but was generally likeable. Now I think it's best he just dies and doesn't come back.

ReZero + Show Spoiler +Everyone is condescending to Subaru because he is acting like a child, but they are being realistic, frank and giving him advice yet he continues to be angry at them. Even when he is given what he wanted while fumbling he just gets angry that he was tricked instead of being thankful he was able to help Emilia. Again yes Subaru is in a stressful situation, but the story is making Subaru out to have a horrible personality and happens to be tortured, the torture itself wasn't the cause.
The fantasy bit is just a weird rant. Shounen's are typically about the power of friendship and adventure to overcome obstacles. A godlike main character is a power fantasy. Subaru's is neither with him just going through terrible shit alone even though he has people close to him.

Yeah I agree for the most part Im just more tolerant of + Show Spoiler +People acting irational and childish when stressed since its pretty realistic from experience at work lol.

The more I watch ReZero the more I hate the MC...
Not sure how they are gonna fix his personality.

+ Show Spoiler [Souma ep 3] + Haven't caught up to the manga yet but was kind of expecting Megumi to lose given how much emphasis the season's OP gives to Ryou and Hayama. For the same reason, not surprised Hisako lost.
New guy also seems like an asshole. I hope Takumi beats him but I doubt that'll happen. I bet Takumi will put his Mezzaluna on the line in the Shokugeki and lose it to this new guy. And then it'll be some sort of char development for him that he'll have to win it back somehow.
The pacing of the eps are also way too fast. Would have liked to see more details shown around the preparation of their dishes but I guess the pace has to be adjusted as there's only 13 eps and I assume they're gonna get through the whole tournament this season.
That cold-blooded Hisako killing endangered turtles though.

I think Subaru is annoying but its within normal parameters for someone in his situation. + Show Spoiler +Ultimately Its not about his failures and tantrums (as someone as desperate and frustrated as he is its not a surprise that a teenager would react this way). It is more about how he learns and get things done. If the plot goes full asspull then it will suck, but if he learns from this and they present a Subaru who manages to break through by learning from his failures then it speaks more to a kid in an extreme situation cracking a little bit but overcoming it.

I think most people are failing to take into consideration the rather significant cultural differences prevalent between where Subaru grew up and lived and where he is now. + Show Spoiler +He's expecting people to react like they would if they were from Japan or a similar culture - People are going to die! Save them! Human life is important! - rather than where he is - A fantasy kingdom full of casual mayhem, violence, and rather strong sense of What's in it for me?
Of course, that's just my thought. I think most modern people today would wind up gibbering in the fetal position sometime around episode one.

Yea and this episode was him learning that in a harsh way.

rezero I hope they explain how and why + Show Spoiler +Julius is being nice to suburu. It does appear hes not really that bad guy suburu thinks he is

I've been so caught up with EVO today I didn't catch this until just now. That's pretty cool.

+ Show Spoiler +He still acts like an Idiot at times. He went completely insane at Crush's place. Anyways, he will ask Felis in the next episode. Dunno why he didn't do so from the very beginning....

+ Show Spoiler +I still think that is easily within the range of emotions for one in his position in that kind of mindset. Desperation and fresh memories of Rem getting slaughtered leading to anger. You don't come off too well when your letting those things boil up and take over.
One thing I will say is this episode the various characters were pointing out where he was being dumb, and they weren't from his rants but rather problems with his real motivations. The same things that Emilia touched on when they argued. They are still there (ofc because its not like you can solve that kind of stuff in that little time). Even the episode title plays into this. I just hope he learned something about himself from the words of those people. Though to be honest in reality its more likely he would fall into the trap of missing the forest for the trees and only remembering his outrage.

re:zero + Show Spoiler +Normally I'd want the main char to not be so annoying... but trying to really grasp and empathize with his situation of being a powerless teenager everything seems to fall into place at least. At least he's been given some good advice so it'll be natural when he learns to take said advice to heart. Unless he goes nuts from dying over and over again.

I am not sure why so many people want him to have a perfect personality and perfect problem solving skills. He is a deeply flawed character with some unlikable traits and severe PTSD. Good. Let him have his tantrums and outburst. Just because you would react different in his situation or think that his behavior is inappropriate does not mean that every character in anime has to be like that. Let's have unlikable characters every now and then, as long as it is within limits and not obscenely obnoxious. As someone already mentioned above, this is not a shounen series and if you are expecting a shounen MC, look elsewhere. Subaru not becoming godlike tier within a few episodes is actually one of the things I like the most about the show.
+ Show Spoiler [re zero] +Enjoyed the episode, less bombastic and sensational as the previous one. I am glad that none of the candidates gave in to his begging and ranting and being pathetic in general. A cold and harsh reality check is what he needs the most right now. Determination and anger alone won't solve anything, let's see if he takes that to heart and learns from his mistakes.
+ Show Spoiler [Orange] +Can she please read the entire letter and actually take it to heart? There was no reason to not read the message inside the rubber asap. Show continues to be kinda meh. Everything is fairly slow and somewhat predictable. I am not sure if I have the patience to continue watching her not being able to make up her mind for an entire season.
Alderamin was solid again, enjoy the characters and story thus far. We'll see if they manage to keep it up...
The Outsider continued the trend of being silly in situations that make no sense. I'll give it one more episode to pull itself together or it will join the growing pile of dropped shows.
91 Days was good, although predictable. Will certainly continue with the show, the highlight of the season along with Alderamin.
I'm starting to get bored of Planetarian, mostly because it fails to give an inside look into the characters. Why is he helping to repair the projector instead of just looting the place?
|
He doesn't have to have a perfect personality. He's just a straight up asshole to me it seems like. I'm not even seeing him trying to change, at least yet. Just seems like he only changes when he dies, and only because he knows doing what he wants is going to get bad outcomes. He's not changing the core reasons why he's doing things, only because he got a bad ending. I'd just like to see some development to know he's at least heading in the right direction.
|
To be fair to him + Show Spoiler +he has only recently started getting negative feedback to some of his bad traits and being in crisis mode isn't the perfect time to self analyze (if he has even picked up on it yet). People don't tend to change until they get this pushback from others. For me its about where they take him, right now its a perfectly reasonable expectation to have him acting this way IE his bad traits really coming to the surface when he is desperate and angry. If the story just goes on and he gets what he wants ez mode and he doesn't learn anything about himself then it would be points against the show. Till then he is fine imo.

re: zero
+ Show Spoiler +no one else hoping Subaru eventually turns into the villain?
at some point, he'll get the power / ability to save the people he cares about, but instead, he chooses to use it against the people that "wronged" him

I really need more airtime in ReZero.

+ Show Spoiler +I'm ok with flawed characters. The problem with Subaru is that he is insanely cocky all the time for no reason. He is basically a nobody, with no skills. He is still never polite, he is always cocky, yells at everyone, makes cynic remarks, holds over-the-top speeches and acts like he is almighty, the only one who can save the day. Honestly, all the arguments brought up don't work on Subaru. Even if he is thrown into a random world he knows nothing about. A world that is brutal and different. Everyone who is not completely stupid would try to be polite and diplomatic at all times. And also cautious. But no, he is actually so retarded it hurts.
