Both, the reset mechanic and Emilia, got some hints so it doesn't seem like it's just about asspulls. + Show Spoiler + The reset mechanic is connected to the witch. We don't know why yet but I don't think we should necessarily know it at this point because of how the story went. The characters had no chance of learning about it and in this case the viewer should learn it when the characters learn it. Same goes for Emilia. Although the most recent episodes kind of hinted at their connection to the witch? Did anybody notice Emilia's body was the only one that didn't show up dead in the massacres? We only saw her flower once, that's all. I feel like we get our answers to both by the end, which is a good thing. Pure speculation on my part: + Show Spoiler + I am fairly certain that at least Puck is deeply connected to the witch, mostly because I think that he knows about the reset. During one of the first few episodes, Subaru calls out for Puck so that he can deflect an attack from that assassin despite the fact that in that timeline, Subaru and Puck have not met before. Yet Puck never mentions that. At first I assumed it was simply an oversight, a mistake of the show... but after Puck killed Subaru in that last episode, it strengthened my theory that he knows about the reset and killed Subaru intentionally to start over. It's not that Puck killed Subaru in a frenzy either, he knew who he was talking to when he said "Sleep along with my daughter" (or something similar). Having someone close to you that allows you to start over if something goes wrong seems like a very potent tool. Roswaal is probably an agent of the witch as well. Similarly to Betelgeuse, he has a strange way of speaking and is very mysterious in general. He seems to be a very powerful person/mage/whatever, yet we see the witche's cult assault his mansion without a trace of him. All the dead cultists we see died at the hand of either Rem or Ram. So overall it's fairly likely that Emilia is a descendant of the witch (Puck calls her his daughter) that Puck and Roswaal try to get into power without her realizing her lineage.

I thought she was the witch. She called herself Satella in the first episode when Subaru made the best impression. Emilia every time thereafter.

I'm 99% sure the thing with Puck and Subaru got adressed in one of the ReZero Break time specials. I personally think Roswaal isn't a (that) bad dude and Emilia probably really got nothing to do with the Witch. Else I don't think she'd be allowed anything like being a candidate and others like OP Reinhard would definitely have realized it by now imo. Plus imo Puck is probably not much more than the Great Spirit that is guarding Emilia (which goes on rampage if she dies), though idk about him. I guess I wouldn't be surprised either way, but so far I don't see it.

I'm not even convinced he's going to turn into an antagonist, but considering he's wanting to kill the Dragon, it's quite likely. Though IDK if he got some reason for that as I don't know much about the Dragon.

I realize after a quick google search that maybe I should've played a VN before I watched it but I dunno I thought it made sense to me anyway. Anyone who knows the Muv-Luv series and can point me in a direction? Thanks!

Technically there are three Muvluv VNs: Extra, Unlimited, Alternative. These need to be read in order. Extra and Unlimited are bundled together in the same game on Steam. Alternative is not yet released on Steam, though there is a fan translation.

Alright yeah I forgot to mention I already downloaded Schwarzesmarken, heard it's a spinoff or some stuff gonna watch it too. I've never really been a fan of VN's but I guess I can give it a shot, it's just still images with text right or is there voice acting? And I assume you mean this one? http://store.steampowered.com/app/449830/

And I assume you mean this one? http://store.steampowered.com/app/449830/ Total Eclipse is also a Spinoff. The original Visual Novel, Muv-Luv, had two "games" as part of it. The first one, called Muv-Luv Extra, is essentially a run of the mill Romcom VN. It introduces the cast of characters of the game and all that. Then comes the second game in the series, Muv-Luv Unlimited. And in MLU, we are introduced to what makes the series popular. Muv-Luv Unlimited takes the main character from Extra, and drops him into an alternate universe, where Humanity is fighting against the BETA. The same universe as you saw in Total Eclipse. The VN is pretty much about the MC adapting to the alternative universe, joining the army, etc. Both of these just got an official release on Steam. After Unlimited comes the crown jewel of the franchise, Muv-Luv Alternative. Its my favorite VN, and a contender for one of my favorite pieces of fiction. Its also really long, and for its time had very good production value for a VN. It should get an official release within the year on Steam. Those three make up the "Muv-Luv Trilogy", and is the main franchise. Beyond them, there are spinoffs and side stories. For instance, Total Eclipse is a spinoff, taking place in Alaska slightly before Unlimited begins. Schwarezmarken takes place in Germany in the early 1980s, roughly 20 years before the main series (and Total Eclipse). All the games have voice acting. There isn't an anime adaption of the main trilogy, since its so long, but there are the two side stories in TE and Schwaresmarken. TE was full of issues, but Schwaresmarken was overall pretty solid, if rushed.

I'll check some gameplay out when it's released on Steam and then decide if I wanna play it. Meanwhile I'll start Schwarezmarken!

Unlimited was better thanks to the genre shift but I did have one major issue with it: + Show Spoiler [Muv Luv Unlimited] + The female pilot suits looked fucking retarded and made it super hard to take the story seriously (especially when I found out that the male pilot suits looked normal in comparison). The fanservice in general felt very forced Oh well I got used to it by the end of unlimited so it shouldn't be an issue for alternative but had I known about it beforehand I would've waited for the steam release before reading it. I'm just at the start of episode 6 of MLA and i'm liking it a lot so far. Tons of infodumping still but I came here for the Sci-Fi so all good. I was sceptical about the pseudo-animated sprites but they look great, makes me wish all VN's had them. Also the MLA menu music is GOAT, anybody have a link to it without spoilers on the thumbnail ?
