i dont think the elevator scene is in there, infact i didn't remember it at all (i thought they just argued). i don't know what is "horrendous" about entering an elevator and there being tension between two people while they stand there in proximity in silence. i've been in plenty of situations where (in my mind at least, not to speak for the other party) there is a colossal amount of tension, embarrassment or churning thoughts whilst standing or sitting unavoidably with another person in silence. its a powerfully emotional situation. i can't talk for the scene in eva coz i dont rly remember it and its hard to empathise with asuka to begin with coz she's a nutcase. the elevator scene i did post was shinji standing awkwardly behind rei saying nothing (afaik) as they descend a giant conveyor belt. most silent scenes are showing some emotion that occurs in a person when they are alone. sometimes it is anger and bitterness like when shinji is sitting on the train for hours. sometimes it is fear and shame like when toji goes to apologise to shinji but can't bring himself to do it. sometimes it is perversion like when shinji is left alone in rei's or asuka's rooms. sometimes it is awkwardness being around other people like when shinji's dad refuses to get on the elevator. sometimes it is a portrayal of comfort or of a lack of control over circumstance like when shinji is lying in bed. and sometimes it is a change in emotion or resolve like when shinji finally doesn't step onto the train to leave the city. all of these things were portrayed in silence and if you're unable to empathise with them then i will tell you now that its you missing out , not me "making them up"

I think simply accusing others off lacking empathy because they don't agree with the hidden and deep meaning you see is pretty lame, to put it mildly.

It's not amazing, it's not deep, and as far as i'm concerned it was simply a way for them to save on their budget, there's not any super complex and deep meaning behind it imho. You're free to disagree, but i do feel that simply saying 'lol you lack empathy to see this super complex thing' is dismissing how others see something as though only your viewpoint is correct. I genuinely don't see evangelion as some super deep philosophical/psychological masterpiece, i see it as a somewhat flawed mecha anime with some decent monster of the week episodes that ended up running into budget problems.

i said its beautiful how they portray emotional situations with the use of silence and then sent said "nah its all in your head" so i literally described the emotions expressed in each one of those scenes in one paragraph: 1) sometimes it is anger and bitterness like when shinji is sitting on the train for hours. 2) sometimes it is fear and shame like when toji goes to apologise to shinji but can't bring himself to do it. 3) sometimes it is perversion like when shinji is left alone in rei's or asuka's rooms. 4) sometimes it is awkwardness being around other people like when shinji is accompanying rei. 5) sometimes it is a portrayal of comfort or of a lack of control over circumstance like when shinji is lying in bed. 6) and sometimes it is a change in emotion or resolve like when shinji finally doesn't step onto the train to leave the city. all of these scenes are done in some prolonged silence and portray strong emotions with their (extremely basic) visuals if you think its "pretentious bullshit and shameless budget saving" then its clearly an issue with you not being able to empathise with and enjoy what i have clearly explained to be simple and effective portrayals of emotion. which, like i said, is fine if you don't like the content material, which i clearly do you were not talking about the same thing as me Unleashing because from what i could gather you were going off on one about "the symbolism in evangelion" which was clearly nothing to do with what i was saying

Given more time and budget I'm sure they could have achieved what they were attempting but alas that's not what happened. Part of the issue with Eva is that you can never have a reasonable conversation about it. It's like the Bernie Sanders of Anime.

What would budget have to do with symbolism? Whether there is meaning to the symbolism in evangelion has fuckall to do with their budget. I think a lot of the scenes that you're attributing far more and deeper meaning to than i think there is to be found in those scenes is just the studio deciding to save money by portraying the emotions like that. I don't think they beautifully portray strong emotions with those scenes, i just think those scenes were produced in a way that saved the studio money and that as a VISUAL medium i felt it was lacking and i most definitely didn't think it effectively built atmosphere or anything. So no, it is not an issue with not being able to "empathise", i just don't agree with you. I mean tbh everyone should just watch the superior Anno anime, Gunbuster. And then watch Diebuster and see one of the best endings that exist in anime.

Anime is an audio-visual medium. So there are different ways to portray scenes, convey meanings, get your point across, etc. Having a silent scene itself isn't bad. It just means that the audio-part is getting omitted for some effect. A good silent scene will then use the visuals to tell a story without speaking. But what does Evangelion do? It gives you both dead air, and scenes of literally nothing happening. If you have no audio, and no visuals, then whats the anime doing? Absolutely nothing. In all these scenes, there is literally nothing happening, no storytelling going at all, no characterization. And then people come in and say "well this scene is is describing the anger and bitterness of the characters, who are left alone in silent isolation, representing the awkward lack of control and changing emotions of not wanting to get on trains". Well I got news for you, because none of that is actually happening, and you are just self-imposing that shit onto a blank. it just sounds like you're incapable of empathising. which is fine, if you dont like something then you're not going to bother to empathise with it. This is a ridiculous notion by itself. It isn't my job to like something and therefore to empathize with it. That's the wrong order. Its the job of the anime to make me like and empathize with it. If it doesn't do that, then its already failed at whats its trying to do. I mean tbh everyone should just watch the superior Anno anime, Gunbuster. And then watch Diebuster and see one of the best endings that exist in anime. Gunbuster just shows how much some of the shit in Evangelion is unacceptable. Anno clearly knows how to make use of lack of visuals or audio to tell a story. Silent scenes, scenes without color, scenes with little visuals but tells a story with the sound, etc. And then he just screws the pooch with Eva.

well, i mean, in the case of EVA, if i only i didnt know they had some severe budget deficit, i would probably still be the same '2deep4you' when i first watched it lol.

Note, the super shitty dub, and how this is literally like a whole god damn scene of Asuka just standing there. And there are people who praise this garbage!

whatever dude + Show Spoiler + if you've never been in a situation where you are silent but 1 single still image depicting the situation describes the whole situation in an emotional state then i'm not sure whether to admire or to pity you

Like i don't even know what she did after becoming dere besides being embarrassed that ichika said she was cute and stalking ichika. lol. Serious question. hmm. I can't really describe it well but it's probably the extra focus that ln and vn adaptions usually put on heroines with arcs centered around them. Also usually have a lot of world building and technobabble. Manga adaptions usually don't have that and i think most of them these days are like SoLs, sports, or iyashikei with maybe one or two shounens per season.
