Edit: wait I think I never watched school days I was thinking of school rumble. Neither are worth watching imo & why the fuck are you telling people to watch disappearance of nagato yuki instead of haruhi suzumiya???? that's like telling people to watch those spinoff code geass movies instead of the actual show (ugh I wanted a clever simile but this was the best I could come up with) oregairu's good!! Can't blame people for forgetting about some good highschool slice of life anime from the dozens (hundreds?) that exist though. Why Nagato Yuki over Haruhi Suzumiya? Because having watched both, you don't actually need to have seen Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya to follow along with the show - it helps you to catch some of the references but the actual story itself doesn't really rely on anything from Haruhi. Also, you don't have to do the weird dance of figuring out what order to watch Yuki in, unlike Haruhi - which came with instructions regarding the ordering of arcs and episodes as well as the sage advice (I didn't take) concerning the Hateful Eight. To be honest, just the Hateful Eight is a good reason to watch Yuki over Haruhi, although the full experience would include Haruhi. The question was about someone relatively new to anime - also a reason I didn't pimp out the entirety of Nisio Isin's Mongatari series, which is also a school setting maybe probably not kindof romantic comedy with supernatural elements and fair bit of pretty girls.

Watching Haruhi is easy. You watch it in the order in which it was broadcast, and then you watch the movie. EZPZ. And the Disappearance of Haruhi was a great film, and its completely worth watching Haruhi just to watch the film. Meanwhile, the Yuki anime is at best simply generic and forgettable.

Doesn't take a genius to figure out how to watch the series after it's aired. Original series was better than the spinoff, despite Yuki being my favourite character in the franchise.

Original series was better than the spinoff, despite Yuki being my favourite character in the franchise. The spin-off however is closer to what was asked about - school centered slice of life. Haruhi takes place in a school, has slice of life, but is about trying to deal the whims of an uncaring god. Well, Haruhi isn't entirely uncaring but then she's not aware of all that she does (or is blamed for) either. I'd watch them both, but if I were recommending one of the two to someone unfamiliar with anime, it's the one I'd recommend first. If for no other reason than the eight episodes in S2. Also, which broadcast order? The original (non-chronological) broadcast order, or the second (chronological) broadcast order?

Besides, Endless Eight didn't happen in the first season. They're not obligated to watch the second season if they didn't like it by the first season.

Not sure if other means order it the same way or not; the source of my watching it had multiple possible orders as a factor. On the plus side, it indicated chronological vs non-chronological. (With the kicker that some of season one's episodes occur after season two, chronologically.) I'm not saying that Yuki is better than Haruhi; just that it's simpler and closer to the genre specs given.

I bet such a being randomly jumps into anime in the middle to watch them, thinks all anime pre-2000 looks like eye cancer, and is known for making really creepy comments about women.

![]() I personally watched both the anime and the movie and I really wasn't a big fan of the anime. But without the anime I you'd miss a lot I guess... I also know someone who only watched the movie too, so it could work.

Are you watching Kuromukuro btw? It doesn't have that much mecha so I'm not sure. I'm enjoying that one, thanks for the rec to the ppl (at least BigFan I think) who said it's good a few days ago.
